Child's Play (2019)
This was worse than I thought it would be
I'm a big fan of the original franchise and with that said, this was a complete disappointment, I even went in with an open mind but they changed far too much. It's no longer paranormal, it's a glitched out android connected to the internet and so it's AI turns pretty psycho.
The new design of the doll is terrible, and it's distracting to me that you can hear servos when it moves as if it were some kind of mini-robocop or terminator..
I'm honestly shocked this has above a 6 rating as of the time I write this..
Yes it has humor but the humor seems hamfisted.. it was never scary or creepy to me, I'd love to see the original series chucky square off against this thing.. I can imagine the expletives coming out of Charles Lee Ray's Chucky as he sees this imposter moving in on his territory.
That should be the next movie .. Chucky vs. Chucky
I liked it, but didn't love it..
I really appreciate the work that went in to telling the story, I really liked that the effects were very realistic and everything, but I think it's a bit overhyped in my opinion. That could just be because I've studied the whole thing and watched many documentaries over the years that to me it felt over dramatized.. I also was obviously distracted by the fact the Russians didn't sound at all Russian.. nobody even attempted to try to sound Russian..
Don't get me wrong, I recommend it.. you will probably enjoy it! it just wasn't exactly for me.. I got pulled in by the hype train and I was into it for a couple of episodes before I lost interest.
Truth or Dare (2018)
The movie is considerably better than you'd get from the reviews on here
It's not perfect but it's definitely a popcorn movie, I enjoyed it. It wasn't too campy, it was a decent premise and it had an open ending as you might expect from any horror film that wants a sequel.
I personally enjoyed it and I think if you go in with an open mind and just wanting to have fun, then this is the movie for you. If you are expecting a deep introspective film experience then why would you go see a horror in the first place? ..
Visual effects were "ok" but it fit in, they weren't over the top and outrageous..
I think the bad reviews come from those that expected too much from an unknown cast and a low budget..
I ENJOYED IT .. Give it a chance! don't let the haters scare you from a good time.
Patient Zero (2018)
I got to see this at a screening
I actually enjoyed this movie more than I thought I would, it was a fun movie willed with a good atmosphere and a decent amount of action.. Stanley Tucci was awesome in this one.
I found elements of "zombie" movies from the past.. there seemed to be nods to dawn of the dead, the original version.. but I don't want to give spoilers..
This is a very fun and slightly new take on the genre.. the idea that communication with the creatures can happen and that there can be a psychological battle going on is the game changer for me, and that's not a spoiler, that's actually visible in the trailers.. it's a twist I've considered plenty of times but I don't think I've ever seen it happen until now, not personally.
Again I love the atmosphere they created, it seems expansive, nothing about it seems low budget.. you have some good actors in this movie.. you don't have gore for the sake of gore, you have a story.. you have character histories.. you have tension and you have twists.. I really enjoyed it and I want to watch it again to catch all the possible nuanced twists I may have missed..
I don't have seizure issues but if you're sensitive to flashing bright lights then you might be in for a nasty surprise..
Having said that, i really didn't enjoy this that much, it was a time killer, but at the end of the day I'd rather have my money back. Nothing special about it, the scoring was decent but the movie itself wasn't that entertaining.
If you're bored and nothing else is available, go ride a bike instead :) I only give it two stars because Christina Ricci is in it.
Day of the Dead: Bloodline (2017)
I wanted to like this so very much
I saw an article where the director wanted to make this true to George Romero's original as possible and this is anything but that. George would rollover in his grave if he saw this movie.
I will say what I like about it first..
1. The set pieces seemed to be designed to try to match the original sets 2. They used a second of the original music in the beginning.. boo only a second 3. The mood seemed right at first 4. They carried over some of the dialogue of the original
What I hated about it:
Everything else.. they changed so many of the core elements from the original that I find it hard for them to say they were trying to stay faithful to the original. They changed so many core elements key to the original film that it felt wrong, including one beloved character that is obvious now the psycho demon like creature that seems as if it were birthed by a demon and the joker..
They also removed the key storyline of what the mission was in the original .. for the most part, in the first movie it was a major story element and in this remake the key plot lines of the original are throw away pieces that are just there for fillers..
This is a piece of junk and it dishonors Romero .. HOWEVER ..
If you never saw Dawn of the dead and you're a youngin' who knows nothing about the mythos George created.. you might have fun with it as a throw away horror film .. it pales in comparison to it's namesake.
Patient Seventeen (2017)
I was entertained, but still don't feel very informed.
I was entertained by it but don't expect the holy grail of information. I've followed the doctor's work for a while and always found it fascinating, I was hoping for something more I suppose.
Still, this was leaps and bounds beyond other similar UFO/Alien themed documentary if you ask me.
If you have some spare time, give it a go.. That's essentially what I did. I wouldn't mind a follow up honestly, I still can't see giving it beyond a score of 3
Very impressed, a very wonderful documentary about an amazing family
I would have given a 10 but I am one of those people that doesn't believe anything is "perfect", blame my business classes..
Nevertheless this movie is amazing, I've never heard of Richard before and I'm a magician myself. I was absolutely blown away by his story and I strongly suggest it, it's an amazing story.
Hooray for Howie Would (1993)
One of the best comedy specials ever
I wish this were available on DVD, the only way I can find it is Amazon on VHS but I don't own a VCR anymore and I think it was out of stock.
It was a hilarious TV special which can be found only on youtube in horrible quality. I remember even 10 years ago trying to find it and never could, it's a shame.
If you can find it, watch it! it's really great material and Howie at his best :)
Overall I liked it, but I was distracted
The movie was pretty well made, the actor who played Michael did a very good job but I have to admit that I was very distracted by his accent coming through. I give him credit because he obviously tried hard, but the accent would sometimes slip through and stick throughout a bit of dialogue as if he forgot to try to use an American accent.
Despite that, the movie was pretty good, it felt like being inside the inner circle, it's a movie that I think is worth watching. I honestly didn't know what I was getting into, I thought it was a documentary when I first started it but I learned right away that it's not.
And whomever they got to play Joe Jackson! excellent casting, he looked a lot like Joe and played it off well..
Before I Wake (2016)
This was a refreshing return to horror/thriller for me
I only gave it a 9 because I don't believe in perfect scores... There's so much that I love about this movie! and I think the thing that helped is that I knew nothing about it going into it. In these days trailers will often spoil things and change your expectations going into it. If the trailer is cut properly it will really raise your expectations and you could be in for a disappointment.. in my situation I never saw a trailer and only knew the title.
Suffice to say I was VERY engaged in the movie because I had no idea what to expect.. there were many amazing elements, I've always loved the implementation of dreams into horror movies because I myself have nightmares often.. it resonates with me.. this movie pulls that off so perfectly in my mind. I also love the amazing performance the kid who plays Cody gave.
I encourage you to give this one a chance, and try to avoid ANY kind of spoilers you can avoid.. don't watch the trailer, just check it out.
Scare Pewdiepie (2016)
I really wanted to like it, honestly
Felix is decent, but the production itself really lacks. It feels a bit like scare tactics only not as good.. in fact I'm pretty sure I spotted a few people in it who were also in Scare Tactics. If you have youtube red then it might be worth it just to pass the time on a boring day but otherwise I would avoid it and just was his other videos.
The only things I did enjoy a little bit is when they had guest on to help Felix out.
I will also say that some of this stuff is obviously scripted, there is a portion where they have Felix talking to himself over the sound system and he responds.. there's no way it could be a "reality" show if you have pre-scripted/pre-recorded moments talking with yourself.
The movie is far better than I anticipated.. when I saw Danny was in the movie I naturally assumed it was going to be a corny horror movie but it really isn't ..
It's actually not even a horror movie really.. there is some aspect of horror in here when the villain is doing his thing.. but the movie is properly fleshed out enough that you care about the characters.. the writing is well done, the acting is well done.. the plot may be a little corny.. a botched execution creates an evil creature .. yadda.. seen that before :)
But .. they keep that villain to a minimum .. JUST enough to serve it's purpose! I definitely suggest checking this one out .. it's definitely not boring.
Digging Up the Marrow (2014)
OK movie, very bad effects
The movie is actually not so bad, it's watchable .. it makes for a decent B horror film, but it's not much more than that!
The "acting" is somewhat believable but when it comes to the visual effects of the "monsters" it just looks like they didn't try .. it looks literally like rubber masks and third rate practical effects.
Again with all of that said.. it was still entertaining for the most part, it's better than some of the other drivel I've seen :)
If you like B movies and you some time to kill then this is worth a go, just don't go into it expecting to be scared or to see something you should take very serious.
I'm going to add this to my collection of films to watch when I have friends over and we're doing a b movie marathon :)
The Cobbler (2014)
I honestly don't get all the hate..
As you've read, this is not your typical Adam Sandler movie.. yes it has it's jokes but it's not his typical shtick .. some of that is thrown in for good measure, but this is much lighter.
This has what I thought to be a very good story and even a nice twist, even though I saw it coming before it was revealed, it was still a nice twist.
I think this movie has a lot of heart and it has morality tale spun in for good measure.. It has a pretty good cast of characters as well.. I got my laughs, I got some sincere emotional moments and the "yay for the underdog" moments as well .. I left satisfied!
The KEY to this movie is don't go in with expectations.. if you're going there hoping to see another "Click" or "Happy Gillmore" movie you'll be disappointed..
I honestly do feel bad for Adam because he's gotten typecast .. if he tries to step out of the expectations then people think he sucks.. Jim Carrey has fought that for a long time.. just as so many others have... Give them a chance!
The Signal (2014)
This IS a good movie, however... technically accurate?
I saw another reviewer talking about how amazingly accurate this movie is technically and that turned out to be a major fail within the first 10 minutes.. I don't want to give anything away so I won't, but I'm a Linux systems administrator since 1998... There was a lot of technical flaws, but with that said.. it does at least a better job than most Hollywood films
It's a good movie that's well written, most of the actors seem to be very capable.. some of them seem not so great but it's to be expected... you should definitely check it out ..
I also read that the visual effects were great... well sometimes, but sometimes not ..
Terrible Angels (2012)
Not a bad movie, very predictable though
By about 25 minutes in I knew what was going on.. but I was still entertained!
It was a really slow start but then after 15-20 minutes it started getting a lot better.. You really should stay through until the end though if you haven't figured things out 25-30 minutes in like I did.
I also have no idea what I could compare this to either, it is a bit unique to me which is why I I was entertained.. I like originality.. so if you can sit through the slow start without giving up like one of the other reviewers then you'll probably enjoy it.
I would have rated it higher if it weren't for some bad acting moments and the really slow start.
