"Shockingly awkward" - (9.5/10)

Contracted horror review (9.5/10) "Shockingly awkward".

The Good

"Great visual effects". "Empathy with characters". "In-depth storyline". "Relationships involved". "Sound used shockingly". "Believable character emotions". "Regular setting variation". "Twists, turns, and contrasts". "Plenty of plot surprises".

The Bad

"Lack of lighting effects".

Introduction

Contracted is a 2013, Drama, Horror, Thriller, movie according to IMDb.

The setting of the scene is hardly the scene itself. It is contrasting and jovial. Perhaps spritely. The spectacle here contrasts starkly to the main movie themes to help you appreciate them more.

It introduces you to key characters and those who are featured occasionally later on.

Storyline

The tale is good because tension is built slowly, against real insight to the lives of others along the way. Empathy is key to sympathising with the main character. Interactions between characters, intertwines fiction with reality so well, they almost blend. The movie becomes a combination of abnormal with normal.

Awkwardness develops well, and insecurity of others allows you to empathise deeply with the main character. This is due to understanding of their typical life, and more-so how the horror of events forthcoming, impinges that.

Genre

Definitely a horror. Lots of gore, despair, and tension. The storyline also lends itself to thriller due to the high tempo and constantly dramatic storyline. Visual effects such as makeup and sound effects, are implemented particularly well, to enhance genre themes.

Music

Eerie sounds appear implemented to portray awkwardness, they support gore and troubling observations, which the viewer is encouraged to make.

Characters

Events continuously become progressively more disturbing throughout. The main characters isolation from normality is a great feature of the film. Plenty of setting changes lead to a stimulating watch.

Summary

"Shockingly awkward".

Planet Terror (2007)
7/10
"Light-hearted, humorous, and action-packed. More contrast and fear factor needed, to appease the adult target audience".
29 October 2019
Planet Terror movie review (7/10) - "Light-hearted, humorous, and action-packed. More contrast and fear factor needed, to appease the adult target audience".

The Good

"Gore". "Huge variety of themes" "Does comedy well". "Plenty of action". "Setting and scenery varied plenty". "Adult males dream elements". "Music varied well". "Some minor surprises". "Touching ending".

The Bad

"Tension build ups not evident". "Contrast between humour and fear, not stark enough". "Not a horror". "Slightly mind-numbing storyline". "Background not fully introduced".

Introduction

According to IMDb, Planet Terror is a 2007 Action, Comedy, and Horror movie.

Storyline

Many themes greet your eyes and ears with Planet terror. These include: Gore, love, comedy, relationships, varied character personalities, and light-hearted tone. Lack of thinking was necessary throughout. It linked phrases, (first mentioned early in the film), to later parts, by repeating the same phrases. Lack of tension-building or suspense was apparent, mostly due to it's light -hearted nature. Contrast between serious and funny wasn't quite stark enough to dub this a horror, however it almost manages to be.

Film aspects such as girls, sex, flames, gore, weapons, would appeal to a younger male adult target audience, perhaps someone in their late teens, I'd suggest. There was also some clever camera work. The plot didn't really make much sense, but counting in it's favour, introducing it's events properly would be a colossal task.

Genre

More comedy, and action than anything. Had some good horror elements, but tension and fear factor wasn't there. These define horror.

Music

In terms of music, background sounds were consistent with tension, becoming louder and more dramatic in these moments.

Characters

There were plenty of charming, varied, and well-portrayed characters. Characters included familiar locals, and specialist professionals. Relationships were believable, despite the light-hearted tone of the film. The ending emphasised this point.

One character was played particularly well. She managed to capture the message of equality in society effectively, whilst still playing a key part in a "major role" relationship. Definitely one of the acting highlights of this film...

Summary

Light-hearted, humorous, and action-packed. More contrast and fear factor needed, to appease the adult target audience.

Climax (I) (2018)
9/10
"Fabulous conclusion and profoundly unique" - (9/10).
11 October 2019
Climax 2018 horror movie review "Fabulous conclusion and profoundly unique" - (9/10).

The Good

"Ineffable ending". "Fabulous build up to the end". "Brilliant soundtrack". "Great character emotions". "Passionate acting". "Strong opening". "Diversity of characters". "Clear themes established". "Changing camera angles". "Setting variety".

The Bad

"Intro too long". "Horror theme too sparse at beginning". "Not enough plot changes". "Slow build up to ending".

Introduction

Climax is a 2018, Drama and Horror movie, according to IMDb. It's produced in France, which mandates watching with subtitles on, if indeed you only speak English like me.

Storyline

From the word go, horror and music themes are suggested casually. Voices and temperaments are clearly engaging, from the opening instant. A clever beginning. Ideas to be taken further, are quickly introduced, giving you a clear sense of the main movie themes. This provides a hook to retain the viewer. Introduction is slightly too long however. Following this, things retain interest and intensity, but the plot is slow to progress, which after a time makes things appear tiresome. Following a slightly mediocre centre, the film progresses towards the ending nicely. Themes such as gore were well implemented here, with despair, stress, profound sadness, fear, and anger. Labelling sections with title pages throughout, also adds something. Not many films feature this.

Genre

The progression of horror vibes after the opening was too slow. It took far too long for anything shocking to occur. In parts, the film was more Drama or Adventure focused than Horror, sadly. From the middle though, the genre became more and more of a Horror, until it actually earned it's reputation as a great film. It was very unusual in it's set of themes, but eventually lived up to it's name. It was in fact, difficult to tell exactly when it became a true horror, but once the whole film had elapsed, it almost certainly did.

Characters

Characters quickly differentiated themselves by their responses to questions asked. This allowed the viewer a way into their personalities, which emotionally seemed nicely variable. The character emotions were tested hugely from middle to end. As the film name suggests, it does build up to a "Climax". It's a shame that the beginning half an hour, didn't provide sufficient horror themes, leaving the viewer only partly engaged. Thankfully though, from this point onwards: Pleasure, satisfaction, fear, despair, grief and turmoil, all ensued. Characters were well portrayed throughout, and really sculpted a distinctive signature for the film. It's one you'll struggle to forget.

Music

Eerie music from the word go, ramping up to more sinister tones. Contrast used well. Music was a central theme throughout, helping its variability. From middle to end, the music really develops into it's own. Becoming a haunting backdrop for the horror themes that develop. The overall soundtrack is a real triumph, and very cleverly created and selected.

Summary

"Fabulous conclusion and profoundly unique".

Best of the trilogy by far !!! (8/10)
4 October 2019
Open water 2: Adrift movie review " Best of the trilogy by far" (8/10).

The Good

"Believable acting and emotions". "Best of the 3 in the series". "Lots of tension". "Lots of dying". "Relationships and emotions included. "Lighting effects striking". "Sound used appropriately". "Cut scenes used". "Camera shots varied".

The Bad

"Lack of continuity from the original movie". "Doesn't fit into the theme of the rest of the series". "Confusing ending". "Lack of evil entities". "No sharks". "Limited scenery changes".

Introduction

Open water 2: Adrift is a 2006, Adventure, Drama and Horror film according to IMDb. While all the open water movies play on fear as the element of horror, open water 2 is the only movie of the trilogy which doesn't feature any sharks.

Storyline

The storyline is full of varied themes. Guilt, fear, love, heartbreak, stress, distress, pain and frustration. It thereby allows characters to get properly involved in playing their part in this fluctuating plot. I must say. A pleasant spectacle. Surprisingly adept storyline. Especially considering the series it comes from.

The ending isn't bad, but not great. It doesn't provide closure, nor does it keep to a horror, or distressing theme, consistently. It appears a little messy. Sadly, the storyline of this movie doesn't fit into the open water series well, if at all, so loses any idea of continuity from the original. Whilst the storyline is good, it could have been further enhanced by scenery changes, or other locations being included. For example, other boat captains or coastal places, could have portrayed a simple side story.

Genre

The genre demarcation is probably correct here. It isn't all about horror or adventure, but certainly possesses both of these, with considerable garnish of drama. I'd suggest when assessing it as just a horror, this movie does well in it's own right. Themes such as the "true feeling of despair", enhances the horror element. It becomes more of a horror due to the loss of individuals, than evil entity per se. This takes nothing away from this particular film. That said, something extra may have enhanced it further, as a pure horror.

Characters

Character personalities are developed well throughout. We get to learn of backstories and relationship history, from various individuals. They become relatable emotionally throughout. This is attained, by allowing us into their lives with both emotions, and character stories. These stories are differentiated, between all of the cast. I must say, emotions are very well portrayed here. Also, cut scenes help contrast the past to the present, which is a clever effect.

Music

Sounds and music are very cleverly employed here. Calming and tranquil, to distressed and tension-building at times, describes well the sheer variation of sounds. These do not impair emotional delivery, which is often conveyed in the absence of any sound at all.

Summary

"Best of the trilogy by far". Could've used more evil themes, and better ending.

Ineffably macabre, ending a little mediocre" - (9/10).
11 September 2019
IT "Ineffably macabre, ending a little mediocre".

The Good

"Lighting effects". "Dual storyline". "Tension built before shocks". "Eerie music employed". "Unexpected events". "Charming character personalities". "Lots of individual characters". "Stunning scenery". "Lots of regular shocks". "Really scary depiction of evil".

The Bad

"Slightly too long". "Settings not varied enough". "Ending not shocking enough".

Intro

Last weeks horror review was It comes at night. I rated this 2017 American horror film 8/10. Today we review "IT", a pretty shocking 2017 horror movie.

Storyline

The storyline is actually very stimulating. There are plenty of mysterious twists and turns until everything is neatly sewn up at the end. On the whole, IT is difficult to fault (pun intended).

The ending could have flown a little quicker, and settings could have been mixed up more for greater variety. Scenes were consistently entertaining though, courtesy of both a well-formulated storyline, great acting, and good visual effects. This made the film a good watch for those eager for mystery and thought while viewing.

Storyline was split between characters lives and evil events unfolding, which prevented a theme of just one thread. This meant dull moments were dormant throughout. Unlike evil. Mwah ha ha.

Genre

Horror is the billed genre, and is certainly the correct classification for this movie. "IT" wouldn't fit anything else (pun intended), and that is part of it's elegance.

Characters

The film is both poetic and artistic, with costume, colours, and blood patterns, all appearing maximally macabre. Character count is high and group's of individuals all retain individuality throughout. This is despite unity of beliefs, at times, which shows effective script writing and casting. Relationships are used well, with both testing and loving themes at times. Both strategically employed. Evil is depicted in a variety of ways, preventing boredom during tension building.

Music

Sound effects and music are used fittingly throughout. Eerie and happy music blends into the captivating watch, that is this entire film. More could have been done near the ending to retain interest though. Light effects complemented the music well.

Summary

Ineffably macabre, ending a little mediocre.

Entertaining and tense till middle, Peters out after that".
30 August 2019
It comes at night Horror review (8/10)- "Entertaining and tense till the middle, Peters out after that".

The Good

"Bursting with visual and sound effects". "Striking camera angles". "Dramatic opening scenes". "Immediate sense of mystery". "Spooky, remote setting". "Highly effective tension building". "Thought provoking ending". "Relatable characters". "Good character relationships".

The Bad

"Too much left unexplained". "Mid-section slightly uneventful". "Story in need of development".

Intro

According to Wikipedia, "It Comes at Night is a 2017 American horror film written and directed by Trey Edward Shults".

Storyline

Dramatic opening, immediate sense of mystery, costumes are also used effectively.

From the first minute, darkness and heavy breathing sound effects hook you. Good signs for things to come...

Shadows in darkness are clear, and noise from surface contact almost echoes making you sensitive to every event. Even the setting is spooky and traditional. Images fade into one another, creating striking visual displays.

Time is used well to raise suspense. No event occurs without a chilling build up. Lighting is consistently dim, hiding exactly what the writer chooses.

It was a shame nothing truly shocking happened, for the mid-parts of the film. It felt a little more action would have helped showcase the great special effects even more.

The ending was very thought provoking. The storyline could've been developed from middle to end, to unravel more of the mysteries from evil presence. I feel a little too much was left open ended for the film to be considered great. A shame for such a great beginning...

Genre

Darker themes are immediately evident, with lighting and sound effects from the off... Unfortunately, with a lack of actual horror depiction, things never truly build up to the climax of the horror genre. Many mysteries are apparent throughout, so perhaps "dark thriller" or "mystery drama", may be better genres for this film. Overall though, I guess a slightly letdown horror is how it appears.

Characters

Stressful voices and breathing, immediately reveal emotional depth to main characters. Character tone of voice and visible expression from the word go, gives you empathy for their roles. A combination of stress, sympathy and shock is felt. Sufficient time is spent in dialogue, to understand the situation well enough to unravel plot events to come. Relationships develop well in a believable way, introducing more positive themes, not always seen in horror movies.

Music

Music is a series of clash-style notes, which immediately elevate tension. Sound effects and volume are combined in tense moments, lifting the entire experience. Music is kept quiet, where background sounds are important. Both work together very well... Music in happier times, was kept jaunty.

Summary

"Entertaining and tense till the middle, Peters out after that".

Open Water (2003)
5/10
"Watch the first 12 minutes and last 20. Ignore the rest" (5/10).
22 August 2019
"Watch the first 12 minutes and last 20. Ignore the rest" - (5/10).

The Good

"Pretty scenery". "Natural environment shot well". "Cultural opening". "Underwater/ above water shot switching good". "Okay ending'. "Sound effects improve". "Joyful music works well for opening".

The Bad

"Basic storyline". "Abysmal hour of horror". "Poor acting". "No plot surprises". "Persistent lack of tension". "Lighting effects rare". "Scenery too consistent". "Barely counts as any genre". "Poor script". "Tension lacking in scary moments". "Not remotely entertaining till ending".

Intro

Open water original is a 2003 Adventure, Drama, Horror, Thriller film according to IMDb.

Storyline

The scenery is filmed in an effective way to convey natural beauty in the tropical landscape. Scenery was complemented by the therapeutic portrayal of wildlife. Local culture is showcased well. Camera shots underwater, and above water, are switched effectively. Worryingly, the above points alone, are comfortably the most enjoyable part of this "so called horror".

The story is unfortunately a very slow burner, barely burning at all for most parts. Nothing remotely interesting occurs till 15 minutes in. Tension exists by 24 minutes in, but is quite feeble. The story isn't entirely believable, which is only partly due to poor acting. In the last 20 minutes, everything improves ! The storyline becomes more eventful, even a little tense. Camera shots are switched. In the last 10 minutes, lighting is changed well too. No huge surprises though, with a very standard and predictable plot throughout.

Scenery isn't changed enough, which again lets the film down against competition.

Genre

Being honest, the first half doesn't deserve to call itself any genre. Adventure, Drama, Horror, Thriller are billed on IMDb. Aligned to those expectations, the film has a little drama in the last 18 minutes. It isn't remotely scary until the final half an hour; Even then, barely a horror. Both drama and horror features, are exhibited poorly. Nothing about the storyline is good enough to be thrilling, as for adventure, that should mean excitement.

It doesn't here !!

The Genre is Horror/Drama, seldom living up to this.

Characters

Acting, okay but not dramatic or entertaining. Characters spout corny lines from opening, and don't become any more relatable throughout. You'd feel indifferent whether they died or not. Tension in mood is poorly consistent, with moments of really serious nature, brushed off without any excitement or anticipation. There are glimmers of feeling at times. In the final minutes, the script miraculously rises from bad to adequate.

Music

There were many spritely scene-setting, opening tracks. When darker tones began, sounds were inconsistent with mood. Tracks were slowly introduced. Lack of contrast was evident in the music between traumatic, and calm scenes. Even in times of tension, after they finally emerge, music still failed to instill fear in the viewer. This needs work. The first halfs' soundtrack, was highly disappointing. Just before you begin tugging out your last bits of hair though, the final half an hour, brings better sound effects and more tension.

Thank God !!!

Summary

Watch the first 12 minutes and last 20. Ignore the rest.

Monster Party (2018)
8/10
"Action-packed moments, well-acted" - (7.5/10).
16 August 2019
Monster party horror movie review (7.5/10) - "Action-packed moments, well-acted".

The Good

"Mood switches immediate". "Macabre sounds opening". "Action packed ending". "Gore and sinister themes". "Storyline keeps you guessing at the end". "Plenty of horror effects".

The Bad

"Middle lost a little momentum". "Inaction in parts". "Hard to feel emotions or impact of horrific scenes".

Introduction

Monster party is a 2018, Horror, Thriller and comedy movie according to ImDb.

Storyline

The punchy opening, clearly sets the scene. Fabulous camera effects and sound adjustment complements the storyline perfectly, allowing technical turns to be fluidly negotiated. After a few twists, the plot steadies into a period of more ordinary life, including themes such as crime.

The darkness is there, but is more of a developing toxin, than sustained action. This gives a chance for characters to get known, preventing tedium. There are regular trips and travel, which helps the adventure element of the horror. This is key to unravelling the source of evil. After some time, mystery elements become constructed. The midsection retained some interest with this mystery, aswell as many sly goals of the characters.

The ending unveils mystery, with plenty of action. Some of which relates back to earlier scenes. Relationships are constantly challenged and surprises continue. By all counts, a pretty strong finish.

Genre

From the first minute, you can see darkness in the movie. This is early for a horror, showing the films commitment to spectator experience. Plenty of sound and camera effects, combined with facial expressions, give a dark experience with punishing effectiveness. As for Thriller, the high tempo events featured, do make this a thrilling watch at times, but Comedy seems notably absent. The ending was tantamount to Horror.

Overall the film is certainly a pure horror or thriller/horror, in parts of mystery.

Characters

Character hobbies are clear early on, with clues to their lives given without delay. The characters while played by okay acting, were hard to believe or really feel at times. Whilst there was plenty of action, better acting would have made it more memorable. Fortunately, main character personalities were hard to read, which kept you questioning motives. There were sufficient varied roles, to create an entertaining watch.

Music

Opening music was loud and bold, drawing you in immediately. Sound effects were implemented extremely early, giving the horror impression. Music through the main parts was much softer, allowing actors to remain articulate, without interruption. The music improved in times of action and tension, and was far better in these parts overall.

Summary

Action-packed moments, well acted.

Shin Godzilla (2016)

Shin Godzilla - (Action, Adventure, Drama) movie review - "Relief when the okay ending arrived. Japanese subtitles didn't help (5/10).
9 August 2019
Shin Godzilla - (Action, Adventure, Drama) movie review - "Relief when the okay ending arrived. Japanese subtitles didn't help" - (5/10).

The Good

"Full creature not revealed prematurely". "Easy to understand concept". "End better than beginning".

The Bad

"Totally unbelievable effects". "Subtitles". "Poor opening". "Limited camera angles". "Quickly stimulates boredom". "Tension building music weak".

Introduction

Shin Godzilla is a 2016 (Action, Adventure, Drama) film, featuring the appearance of a giant monster.

Storyline

Dull camera angles complement a very simplistic storyline. Acting seems robotic. Roles of people that seem like robots, appear uniform and alike. No individual storylines exist for characters. The sole story, is about an event which begins to unfold very suddenly. The drama isn't felt at all by the viewer though, until at least an hour into the film.

Once this point is crossed, decision making in the film, and greater emotions, liven proceedings a little. This stops the viewer falling asleep. The ending is better than the beginning, displaying an "okay" climax. Nothing special still ...

Overall, far too basic and dull storyline to be relatable, believable, or remotely worth a watch.

Genre

The billed genre on IMDb is (Action, Adventure, Drama). The opening displays scenes, intended to convey action and excitement. Instead, they educate on poor effects and surrealism. It feels like anything but all it's genre keywords. IMDb could've picked ( Lullaby, Gaming and Mythological) to be equally as valid. After a little while, a few moments gave a comedy impression. This isn't what the film is billed for though.

Probably just me, laughing at the dire acting...

Despite events, the film is certainly not a horror, and poor effects detract from any clear genre working.

Characters

Very dull and boring, with no individual personalities coming through. By the end, a few distinct characters could be seen, feels too little, too late.

Music

None in the opening scenes. No camera effects to compensate. Eventually music began after mass destruction began to occur. Whilst this was the correct theme of music, it really didn't increase tension enough. By half an hour, music begins to be more effective.

Summary

Relief when the okay ending arrived. Japanese subtitles didn't help.

Overlord (1975)
8/10
Powerful, emotional, with meaningful ending.
3 August 2019
Overlord 1975 War film review (8/10) "Powerful, emotional, with meaningful ending".

The Good

"Varied Music". "Music fitted themes well". "Effective tension building". "Powerful acting". "Well cast roles". "Emotive ending". "Genre spot on". "Character relations varied". "Dramatic camera shots used". "Power of pictures over words respected".

The Bad

"Not enough action in parts". "Horror element softened too much". "Not scary enough at times". "Main character a little dull".

Introduction

Overlord is a 1975 War film, set in wartime Britain during the Second World War.

Storyline

The film has a compact length to prevent viewer boredom. The story begins quickly, with lots of effects and drama, before settling into a more stable period. There were a few stretches in the middle where the focus was a little unclear, leaving the viewer prone to distraction. The film had a clear theme from the start, and should be commended for sticking with it. The outstanding ending really lifts the experience. The lack of words in important moments, helps pictures powerfully reflect events. Daily life takes place with backing music, but little else. Your attention is drawn in as a result.

Genre

From the very start, camera shots elucidate the midst of war. The music and effects, further give this away as a horror. Throughout, the darker side was featured more and more. The black and white colours work well in the movie, making everything appear more evil.

Overall, I would describe this as a "War horror" rather than simply a "War" film, one that brings a real sense of powerful meaning and emotion.

Characters

Tension building was carried out well, firstly using characters serious facial expression, and secondly cut scenes in key moments. These helped sustain tension through uneventful points in the storyline. Contrasts were used at every turn, keeping scenes standing, for poignant meaning. Not a word was uttered for at least 4 minutes, allowing characters to appear like clones. This seemed to be the impression the film maker was going for, from the off ...

When speaking commenced, it was immediately clear the main characters were accustomed to the war era. This highlighted good acting and casting. Characters felt relatable too, thereby improving scenes that followed.

The main roles were followed closely, giving you real insight into their lives. The film was lifted by a great ending, and sustained the importance of relationships till the end.

Music

The soundtrack began effectively with an eerie first track, including marching sounds and military discipline. Happier moments were supported by joyful background music. Tracks fitted moods well for the film, and were mixed up in tempo and style. Happy, sad, eerie and instrumental themes, kept music well-implemented, and varied.

Summary

Powerful, emotional, with meaningful ending.

22 July 2019
Stephanie 2017 Supernatural Horror movie review - (9/10) "Abundant in shocking surprise, leaves you wanting more".

The Good

"Great contrast between good and evil". "Captivating throughout". "Horror genre is clear and correct" "Unique horror concept". "Abundant in shocking surprises". "Innovative take on haunted house theme". "Appropriate soundtrack throughout". "Great acting to play with your mood". "Keeps viewer guessing". "Storyline progression slick".

The Bad

"Boring name". "Lacking any noticeable creature or truly scary entity". "Nothing truly scary revealed".

Introduction

Stephanie is rather unremarkably named, after the girl who is the main character. It's classified as a supernatural horror from 2017. It's a heart-felt movie conducted from her perspective, using a range of storyline twists and effects. Effects used to create a striking show.

Storyline

The storyline was very captivating, mostly because the element of mystery was sustained throughout; Something seldom seen in the horror genre. The pace of the storyline, was also refreshing, never feeling like a tiresome wait for something to "Jump out of the closet", as it were. It's take on the haunted house theme, seemed innovative and original. The storyline consistently plays with your emotions, spanning "content" to "tense", at regular intervals.

It's special effects only enhanced what has to be one of the best pitched horror movies I've seen. When it finished, I wanted to see more. This is never the case for mediocre films...

Genre

Supernatural horror, as it's classed, is pretty much the idyllic genre for this film. You certainly get the sense early on, that the supernatural is involved. The source of this is uncovered piece-by-piece throughout. It gave me chills, like any good horror should.

Characters

Whilst limited in number, characters were acted well, leaving the viewer questioning their opinions and ethics throughout the film. Other than the main character, none appeared trustworthy; That's a hard effect to achieve. With characters both real and pretend used, the film created a good range of relationships and emotions. Both of which were thoroughly tested throughout.

Music

The music began with tranquil piano, yet progressed with an aura of eerie tension building, growing into more sinister piano tunes. It was good to have a consistent instrument in the music as-well, employed well for tension building.

Summary

Emotionally entertaining, and abundant in shocking surprise. Leaves you wanting more ...

"Keeps you questioning character values. Setting and storyline, needs a little more development".
13 July 2019
The Good

"All characters well played". "Diverse range of character personalities". "Effective tension-building effects". "Music varied well". "Character morals changing regularly". "Action from the start ". "Enough character background".

The Bad

"Not scary enough for a horror". "Mid-section at times, felt a little slow". "Lack of setting variation". "Not many characters". "Plot in middle lacked a little adventure".

Introduction

Cloverfield is a highly atypical movie series. The first 2008 movie simply called "Cloverfield" is nothing like the 2016 sequel we review today. These movies surprise and entertain in a way unlike almost any other sci-fi/Horror movie. Today the 2nd Cloverfield movie "10 Cloverfield lane", takes centre stage.

Storyline

The storyline is too simple. Yes it details backstories, includes characters well, and surprises with deceit and changing character viewpoints. For me though, it feels slow in the middle and the ending lets it down. The setting is clearly restrictive, which doesn't help it's limited mid-section action.

Genre

The surprisingly reliable "Wikipedia" defines 10 Cloverfield lane as a "Psychological horror ... with science fiction elements". This 2016 release I'd define as simply a Thriller/Sci-fi. Thriller, since it tricks the mind, and Sci-fi because of it's dystopian setting. Whilst it isn't what you'd expect from a standard horror movie, it has a slightly dark theme. Still not really a horror though ...

Characters

The characters are very well played, and they need to be. The one-dimensional setting throughout, means good acting is essential here. In this way, the film doesn't disappoint. With few characters, the diversity is very effective here and helps with the psychological elements. The characters and behaviour, with heart-felt emotion, are difficult to fault, and keep surprising you.

Music

The music is used effectively to build tension, yet isn't overused. Types include "Epic high suspense" tracks, and "Calming everyday tracks". Silence is used on multiple occasion, with good effectiveness. Additional sound effects throughout, may have increased tension at times, but on the whole, music fits the plot well.

Summary

Keeps you questioning character values. Setting and storyline, needs a little more development.

Creep 2 (2017)

Short, but effective horror concerto (9.5/10)

Creep 2 horror movie review (9.5/10)- "A short but effective concerto, of emotion and tension at times. A few extra stitches needed to gel the production".

The Good

"Is definitely a horror". "Nothing overplayed". "Lack of unnecessary music". "Excellent, engaging acting". "Consistently engaging storyline". "Lots of shocking surprise". "Unexpected plot moments". "Tension building fabulous". "No special effects needed". "Striking camera shots".

The Bad

"Some parts didn't tie in effectively". "Beginning, a bit disjointed". "Slow to establish the storyline". "Not long enough for such a good film".

Introduction

The sequel to the original Creep film is Creep 2. This is a 2017 Thriller/Horror.

Storyline

The Creep storyline in this episode, was even more entertaining than the previous one. It has lots of surprises, and plays with your emotions well. By contrast to most horror movies, the plot takes many turns which include positive, aswell as negative, emotions. It also provides real insight into the life of the killer. This surprised me, and acted as a real hook to stick with it. As far as engaging, the beginning was a little disjointed, but did retain interest. By the middle, the main characters plus their stories were introduced well, bouncing off each other perfectly. The film from middle to end, became more and more edgy. It eventually left me with a surprise finish. Very good overall.

Genre

The genre of thriller/horror isn't a bad impression of the film, although (dark thriller), or simply (horror), would perhaps be a better description of what the movie is. I'd class this as a pure and simple serial killer horror. It will thrill you because of the fear factor, as any horror should.

Characters

From the word go, there was dramatic, and "straight to the point", acting. There wasn't a moment of shyness, or cruising by the actors. They stayed in role very well.

The number of characters, whilst restricted, helped to add to the tension in this film. It also enabled their personality and life story, to be understood well. The character personalities resonated well, enhancing the impact of the film. In this respect, viewer emotions were played with constantly. It was a real spectacle throughout. So much so, I felt compelled to scribe this review.

As for tension, this was effectively created out of nowhere, with little or no effects. The close up camera shots with lack of special effects, drew me into character perspectives, making the film rather thrilling. One of the scariest elements of this film, was the aspect of sound. This movie didn't require music, as the sounds alone were enough to build tension. The scarcity of sound use, allowed elements of isolation and loneliness to drive fear.

Music

Music was infrequently used, but when it was, it worked well, and was impactful. I was very impressed with the lack of music in this film.

Summary

A short but effective concerto, of emotion and tension at times. A few extra stitches needed to gel the production.

Rampage (2018)

Rampage movie review "Great fun family Sci-fi action, with some engaging acting"- (9/10).

Rampage movie review "Great fun family Sci-fi action, with some engaging acting"- (9/10).

The Good

"Fits genre brilliantly". "Tense music". "Plenty of action". "Heart felt characters". "Emotion and comedy". "Diverse character range". "Brilliant ending". "Good opening". "Some surprises".

The Bad

"Plot a little predictable". "A little mediocre in some mid-parts". "Some events too unrealistic".

Introduction

It feels like only yesterday I watched an action packed movie, featuring a great ape. Which is probably because it "was" yesterday. Today I review another with a great ape. For comparison purposes, this is great news. Today I review Rampage, a 2018 Sci-fi, action. Find out right now if this or Kong: skull island is the best watch. Don't look away though, you don't know what rampaging creature will emerge behind you.

Storyline

The storyline here, fits the genre much better than Kong did. There was actually science here. Plenty of scene diversity, and never a dull moment, keeps you following tightly the intricacies of the tale. The storyline featured each main character enough for you to get to know them. Whilst again, the storyline was a little predictable, this kept it suited to a whole family audience. It wasn't totally without surprise either though. The film created an enjoyable, mostly effortless watch, with enough complexity to satisfy my desires. Enough mysterious material allowed the 2 hr duration to evaporate in the blink of an eye. This is how it should feel with any long film which warrants it's duration.

Genre

As said, Sci-fi/action was the perfect genre for this film. Action was never far away and I can't say I was ever bored throughout this film. The Sci-fi element was there sufficiently, with epic creatures as suggested by the Rampage title.

Characters

Plenty of background to get to know each of the characters was provided. The range of bravery, love and motivations was played creatively in this film. Casting was diverse, and the main roles were played by some of my favourite names. Even those who weren't well known, got into character well for minor and major parts.

Film can be like an orchestra. Without the strings it wouldn't sound right, even though drums are louder.

The effective character playing both emotionally and logically, made the storyline spring to life. I actually found myself feeling sorry for characters, undergoing tough times. There was enough comedy to lighten the mood too. Towards the end, I felt part of the set. Earlier on in the film, things were still good, but not quite as engaging as the ending.

Music

The music was always suspenseful, yet fitted harmoniously with the themes of the plot of the time. It was withdrawn where necessary, to act as a tension building device.

Summary

Great fun family Sci-fi action, with some engaging acting. With a little plot development earlier on, and slightly more believable action scenes, the film could have become an ace watch. For the record, this beat Kong: Skull island in my book.

Kong: Skull Island movie review "An action-packed, travelling fantasy film, with plenty of costume and scenery effects to leave you satisfied". - (8/10).

The Good

"Fantastic landscapes and scenery". "Good costumes and acting". "Some cool backing tracks".

The Bad

"Predictable storyline". "Dragged a little, early on". "Not many creatures".

Introduction

Hey guys, so after travelling to Italy in the world of cider, and travelling to Worthing and Yarmouth recently. P.s All available on my blog reaseadotorg, I am now travelling into a magical world in the Pacific. A world unlike anything my senses have ever witnessed. Prepare for THE Kong: Skull island movie review !!!

A 2017 Fantasy Sci-fi, with lots of action and massive creatures worth a watch ?

You bet son...

Yeah, I mean the film was cool. Good music, good characters, good scenery. There were quite a few weaknesses but none that a mountain-sized gorilla couldn't cover up ... See more below:

Storyline

The storyline, without giving too much away, was understandable for all the family. It was frustratingly basic for the Uber intelligent though. Yes it had action, pretty good effects and graphics, and a few key events with different settings. Beyond this though, there was something missing. I'm guessing it wasn't a mountain-sized ape, but more likely, stuff which could've happened that wasn't made so predictable.

Part of the blame lies with the script here. For example, If you say: "When I go to the park, there will be a kid on a swing". Then go to the park, and when you get there and Ryan is indeed (on the swing), that discovery isn't particularly dramatic. It doesn't say ... BOOM !! like a surprise. More "Oh right, yeah".

The rest of the blame, lies with the actual events that happened, not having enough going on. Maybe a few more creatures or natural events would've compensated for this ...

Fortunately, the scenery was changed regularly. With characters travelling quite a bit. This was a good touch, and certainly made things more entertaining.

Genre

As for a Sci-fi/fantasy, the film was good. All characters had excellent graphics and effects. The genre was only let down by the number of characters that existed. There certainly could have been quite a lot more. This would have made the fantasy even more fantastic. I would say, this would be better categorised as an action/fantasy rather than Sci-fi, because despite some scientists being involved, there is very little science actually in the film. At least compared to the level of action.

Characters

The lead roles had good diversity and plenty of character personalities, with ideas coming to light throughout. The interactions were insightful enough to regret characters being harmed, yet were slightly basic. I'd suggest a few less characters, to improve the emotional connection to their roles. Despite this ... The costume variety only enhanced this aspect of the film, and with a few big names, the characters were on the whole well-played.

Music

The music was applied where necessary, to compensate for less action. With restraint at times, where other sounds were more significant to the impact of the scene. This is an area frequently underperformed, but for this film, the balance of when music was played, and it's type, was effectively incorporated.

Summary

An action-packed, travelling fantasy film, with plenty of costume and scenery effects to leave you satisfied.

Moneyball (8.5/10) " Good family film without enough drama".
12 May 2019
A true tale with great morals. To begin with, I felt the 2hr duration may have been overkill, and feel drawn out and protracted. Throughout the film however, it grew on me like a wall flower, not a fungus.

The actors played their part well, with some good names filling the main places on the lineup. You feel the tension well emotionally, and in anticipation.

Family relations are heart-warming, and the film creates a great atmosphere for the viewer throughout. Difficult to fault, all-in-all. The plot could perhaps have a couple more twists and turns. Music appeared a little bit of a missed opportunity here too.

Overall, a movie well worthy of a watch. I'd recommend certainly.

2:22 ( 7/10) "Incomplete romance, reality type thing- Not a Sci-fi".
12 May 2019
A film which didn't seem like much, but developed well for those fans of romance more than sci-fi. For a sci-fi, it felt a little strange. Almost had more of a horror angle, which could have been exploited more.

Unmistakably, relationships played a key part in this movie. With career involvement too, the themes were all too real to fit it's genre. In it's own right , tension was built well and the ending was quite a revelation. Again more imagination could have been applied to the plot to make more of this movie. It felt like an unfinished article. The storyline does need improving here. I wouldn't rule out another release of this, after adaptation in future.

The basics were there with good characters, a good plot base, plenty of action, and some relationship engagement.

A specific genre, developed plot, a few more twists and turns, would be needed to turn this good watch to a great one.

Arrival (II) (2016)

Arrival (9.5/10) "Non Traditionally creepy and awakening".
12 May 2019
Arrival was a simply stunning true Sci-fi movie. One, full of action and varied character personalities. Tension was retained well, and it was a true sci-fi. Action wasn't constant, but when there was action, it was meaningful. Plenty of cut scenes kept the story stimulating, with a heart warming, aswell as strangely terrifying undertone.

The film wasn't traditionally scary, but had a real aura of fear of the unknown, which brought things to an amazing watch. To improve, perhaps the set could have been varied a little more.

Resident Evil (2002)
5/10
Lacking the tension to accompany enemies" -(5.5/10).
14 December 2018
The Good

"Clever plot". "Storyline explained quite well". "Plot understandable". "Good creature design". "Varying environments".

The Bad

"Mediocre acting". "Emotion not believable". "Film length too great". "Effects very poor". "Some necessary information omitted". "Music lacking". "No unexpected plot turns".

Resident evil is the first, of a long film series of action-horror films. Released: 2002. Having reviewed, I wouldn't recommend though.

Storyline

The story was well introduced, so the background could be clearly understood. Often, horror films neglect the setting, so this was positive. It didn't however, go into any detail prior to weird and wonderful creatures appearing. This made the context of some lifeforms, impossible to comprehend. It meant, you couldn't understand where some creatures had emerged from, or how they came into being. Some of the film was rendered tame, because of this. The storyline involved multiple locations which was good, but this didn't add much enjoyment overall. The plot was a simple, yet clever, idea. One that should have lead to tense circumstances regularly. It could have been far better used however. The plot, whilst good, in my opinion for the significant film length, had to be epically supported by tension building effects such as strange sounds, changing lighting, unpredictable occurrences, and appropriately fearful responses. Long horror films do rely on such quality, which was sadly absent here.

Tension

At moments of attack, things should have been suspenseful. Creatures did allow tension to be created at a few sweet spots, but these were seldom regular. Special camera angles or effects would have helped increase tension. Music was barely used, and the infected creatures didn't make noises effectively enough, to create a tense atmosphere. Lighting wasn't varied enough, and injured struggles weren't prevalent. I wanted to believe character adrenaline, but I'm still not truly convinced they had any.

Characters

A wide variety of creatures and infected humans were encountered, and some facial expressions were effective. A lack of stress under the circumstances, actually made it unrealistic though. The character make-up and creature movements however, appeared sleek and interesting. Creature body forms seemed well considered and should have been intimidating. Characters seemed fairly well played, with a few stand outs, using facial expressions well to combat fairly unimaginative, camera angles. There were some close-ups used effectively, albeit very rarely. Enemies weren't unpredictable, and generally attacked as expected. Not helping the fear factor.

All settings were well lit, and shadows weren't used. A lack of subtle suggestion then, didn't put you on edge. Certain scenes were horrific and gory, yet didn't elicit a believable horrified reaction, from peers or the viewer. Again, sound effects to accompany gore, just weren't there !

Summary

Tension building effects such as strange sounds, varying lighting, unpredictable occurrences, and appropriately fearful responses were lacking. They couldn't lift a variety of imaginative characters and creatures, beyond a fairly uninteresting entity.

Ice age 5 : Collision Course (9/10) -"A delightfully humorous edition of a great family adventure. A little predictable, but not in it's comedy or characters".
8 December 2018
Ice age 5 : Collision Course film review (9/10) -"A delightfully humorous edition of a great family adventure. A little predictable, but not in it's comedy or characters".

The Good

"Excellently amusing situation comedy". "Diverse and distinctive characters". "Nicely flowing plot tempo". "Lack of dull moments". "A few key educational points". "Target audience considered". 'Family-appropriate jokes". "Colourful characters and scenery". "Great tension building effects". "Distinctive USP".

The Bad

"Some character groups one-dimensional". "Few plot surprises". "Predictable ending".

Storyline

The storyline was certainly action packed, with pleasant diversity in environments. These included space, prehistoric earth, and snow. Some variation in events, kept things relatively entertaining, although the ending was predictable throughout the movie. The storyline whilst basic, was hugely enriched by well-played characters.

Movie length was restricted effectively, to prevent the mid-parts bearing mundane periods. The introduction was brief, yet varied, and provided enough intrigue to entice viewers into the plot. The storyline was educational in parts, a great feature for a family movie.

Tension

The tension building effects were professional, with comedy implemented to finish. Music was utilised for dramatic effect to assist this. Additionally, lighting effects within mist created an aura of mystery at such moments. Switching camera focus and angles in variable locations, was also done well, providing a truly visual spectacle.

Characters

Buck featured again, much the same as in "Dawn of the dinosaurs". Other characters included Sid and his grandma. Plenty of new characters also featured, most with distinct, and often conflicting, personalities. The characters here, were as diverse as they've been in the prequels. Whilst certain characters appeared to follow like sheep, others really embodied their personality. They often provided believable, yet funny reactions. Fortunately, none were totally predictable, keeping the plot entertaining, and fresh. Combining tension, with comedy, was particularly good in this movie. This was possibly it's main USP.

Variation in character viewpoints was well exploited, with plenty of sitcom moments. These were each highly amusing, shown by my lack of "deaf ears" , to any of the jokes posed.

Character colours were highly diverse, and used well to brighten up the settings.

Summary

A delightfully humorous edition, of a great family adventure. A little predictable, but not in it's comedy or characters.

Open water 3: cage dive film review " Opening has some promise, till tension fails to deliver"- (6/10).
24 November 2018
Open water 3 is a 2017 Drama/Thriller genre film.

The Good

" Okay concept". " Some relationship variety". " Entertaining opening scenes". " Clearly introduced plot". " Good looking characters".

The Bad

" Limited character personality". " Poor tension building". " Shots barely changed". "No scary scenes". " Not believable acting in distress". "Characters easily jumpy". " Dull parts". "Predictable plot". "Uneventful ending". "No twists or turns".

Storyline

The storyline was clear from the start. Anyone can work out the film is about a cage dive and wouldn't be a thriller unless something unexpected happened. Clearly then events were predictable. There were limited twists, and certain parts did drag. You may be surprised to hear then, that the first part of the film before the adventure, borderline impressed me. The plot background was clearly explained which gave the basis for a film anyone could start to get into. After the scene was well set, some playful relationship footage helps entice you in to the drama. In any adventure film, close and believable relationships are essential for audience connection to the characters' emotions. Especially in times of turmoil and activity. Here, these relationships were present, and a little varied, despite not appearing totally authentic. This should have helped continue an engaging plot throughout the film. Unfortunately things rumbled on a little slowly and predictably with no real surprises.

Tension

Tension building is one of the most important aspects of a thriller. Here music wasn't used, so to compensate, expressions and reactions were under the spotlight. Before any real indication of tension, horrific events began to occur. This seemed briefly exciting, but with subsequent tense moments barely distinguishable from normal life, clearly something was missing. Emotions were over-emphasised, during repetitive "easy spooks", yet were hardly believable when something significant actually happened. Camera angles were barely changed, and footage remained above the waters surface for most of the time. Limited variation in shots, dramatic responses and shocking events, kept the film on a fairly dull level throughout. No climax or twist occurred at the end.

Characters

The characters were mostly well played, although emotions weren't always believable. Characters appeared to be selected more for looking attractive, than using a range of expressions to truly captivate the viewer. Limited background information to the characters, meant any troubles faced, didn't tug at my heart strings, or pluck them any faster. I wasn't scared at all throughout the film duration, even though I wanted to be.

Summary

A well introduced and inspired movie, accessible to all. Lack of tension building, slow pace and predictable plot weren't saved by mediocre acting and limited camera angles. I would recommend the viewer watches the introduction until the adventure but little enjoyment follows. Not a disaster, yet barely worth your time.

Coco (I) (2017)

17 November 2018
" Creatively colourful, with some twists and turns. The story was basic until the end though " (8/10).

Coco is a 2017 Family and Kids genre, 3D computer-animated movie from Pixar studios. One worth a watch :)

Good

" Pleasant music and storyline morals". " Brilliantly colourful animation". " Some unpredictable twists and turns". " Captivating plot towards the end". " Clear introduction to story". " Creative ideas for unique concepts".

Bad

" Storyline a little too basic". " Limited hints of ending". " Too many twists towards the end". " Slow character development". " Lack of character diversity". " Lack of story progression in the middle".

Atmosphere

The atmosphere was well established through good ideas, resulting in well applied colour, imagery, and settings. The characters moods created tension at times, but more personality would be needed to connect with all the family. The atmosphere shifted well in times of trouble, which was refreshing and invigorating towards the climax. All in all, a good atmosphere for the most part was maintained.

Music

The music was often spritely and happy, encouraging the viewer into the setting. It was a little too refrained during protracted parts though. Towards the end it was used as a true symbol of family, which appeared the intended audience for the film. At this time it was rather appropriate.

Plot

The plot was understandable, yet too basic for a whole-family target audience. It had one key idea underpinning the whole film. This idea had good morality, but wasn't developed enough until close to the end. Therefore the plot was insufficient to provide a great film throughout the entirety, yet provided a solid foundation for a good film.

The characters were well played, with good expressions and emotions. A lack of character development was apparent for too long though. Too much information was revealed towards the end, which could have made slower parts of the film more enjoyable. At this time though, the plot was interesting, the music and colours were good, and even the story's complexity increased slightly, to a good family audience level. The middle 40 minutes could've benefitted from some of this hugely.

Graphics

The graphics were the highlight. Colour was generously used to draw attention to the beauty of the setting. Colours used, were calm and tranquil, including purples and pinks in the early stages, into a much brighter repertoire, symbolising the excitement in the latter parts of the film.

Summary

A greatly colourful film with creative ideas in the latter stages. Some twists and turns before the end, and a clearly understandable plot. Let down by limited character development and a lack of story progression in the middle stages. Overall a film with good morals for the family. One that wasn't earth shattering though.

The Mist (2007)

" Great emotions, good effects but a little long and dull at times". (8/10)
22 April 2018
The Mist film review (8/10) " Great emotions, good effects but a little long and dull at times".

The Mist is a 2007 sci-fi horror film. In my opinion it is an average horror but better as a sci-fi as it is believable, yet not consistently scary.

Plot

The plot was a basic concept but well executed to emphasise emotions and feelings, whilst maintaining tension. It was fairly consistent throughout, but enough variation in the setting, was applied to maintain interest throughout most of the movie. Themes such as racism and religion were carefully employed and likened to society of today. The people in their actions seemed to effectively mimic reality, keeping things believable in a surreal scenario.

Music

Music was absent for most of the movie. The quiet allowed emotive words to have real impact though, and the acting to be carefully observed. It was used well for eerie scenes, and seemingly impossible events were backed up with religious music. Overall the music complemented the themes of the film well.

Setting and effects

The setting was an everyday mundane location, making the events unfolding unexpected. This acted as a good surprise hook to entice the viewer to keep with the film, following the introduction. As time went on the setting became more consistent yet the strength of characters kept things interesting enough to prevent boredom.

The horror was a little too limited at times however, bearing in mind the setting and long movie length. It perhaps needed a little more shock value in places. Particularly around the 1 hour mark, I found this to be the case.

The effects for a 2007 film seemed very well done and for some peculiar life forms this did indeed feel as realistic as possible. The setting was used well to play on emotions and relationships. It also gave a sense of tension. It didn't merit the 2-hour movie duration however, which was why certain parts felt a little dull.

Emotions were not especially effective when people were busy, and seemed to die off at times. In times of tension however, or greater excitement, the emotions also became more believable. The movie ended in a slightly predictable fashion, although the strength of emotion made this really heart- felt which left me feeling that the film was definitely worth the watch.

Summary I would recommend watching this film as a mixture of horror, sci-fi, and almost reality drama in a way. For the film however, the duration was too long and the enemies a little sparse. Certain parts needed greater excitement and more emotion. Overall this was exciting though, and capable of keeping an interested viewer throughout.

Creep (I) (2004)
"Creepy, Clever, yet fairly constant". (7/10)

Creep review " Creepy, Cunning yet fairly constant" (7/10)

The movie starts in a comforting setting, confusing you as to what is to come. Settings are ideal throughout, to provide a real heir of tension. The music is catchy and rhythmic with a creepy undertone. The characters are well played and the movie benefits from a relatable location, with normality as a baseline. It cleverly builds tension with relationships emphasised at times, yet doesn't let you know enough about the main characters in my opinion.

The film leaves space for a sequel with certain unanswered questions. The tension building whilst good, would benefit from additional special effects. In my mind, after the tension is cut, it is never truly reestablished. The scares become repetitive and predictable without any variation except precise location. Whilst you're encouraged to continue watching out of curiosity, this isn't out of fear.

Darkness needs to adopt more forms to provide a more satisfying film. The plot is good though as it is well considered. It makes logical sense and is not overextended, with a fairly minimal film duration.

With limited characters, and some considerable pauses between dramatic events, the film reaches a level and stays there. It would be great to see something more imaginative than the expected. That said worth a watch and a good movie with some level of uniqueness.

The Descent (2005)
(8/10)- " Good storyline, tense at times with okay acting".
20 January 2018
The Descent 2005 review " Good storyline, tense at times with okay acting". (8/10)

Quite a pathetic beginning, with a lot of unnecessary details. The main concept was set out clearly though which helped the sense of adventure. It was a long while before the horror seemed to truly build, yet tension was met early on cleverly at a lower level. The sort of film which only gets better as time goes on.

The lack of music and diverse range of gore, horror and despair worked well to keep the viewer entertained throughout the adventure. Relationships played a key part of the outcome and the film did well in bringing out personalities, and how they differed in traumatic moments.

The film gives you a sense of context aswell throughout, keeping you aware of the significance of what is going on. The title is good and reflects enough to describe the themes of the movie, without spoiling the plot.

I would have liked a little more music in tense moments and some modern effects in places as well. Cliff hangers were given which provided the opportunity for a sequel. I wouldn't rule out watching it based on this film.

While in the opening the acting was a little overplayed, the expressions did get better throughout. The film could have given more tension, and became scarier with better acting.

Overall the movie storyline was good, the acting wasn't great, but the tension was built well, with clever use of the camera and setting. I would recommend certainly for those into adventure horror as it is one of the better ones I've seen. For those looking for a truly epic film though, you may wish to look elsewhere.
