Breaking In (2018)
Another underrated film
Oh for good sake, another low rated film that did not deserve it. This time I am guessing the reason could be that the female lead looked stronger and more intelligent than the males most of the time. One reviewer did a retell of the film and then awarded it a low score so maybe the issue is with the people awarding the scores. People are biased sadly. I did not expect anything great so was pleasantly surprised that it exceeded my expectations. The acting was good and it was a little different from other home invasion films. Of course it would resonate at times because how original can you be on the same topic. It is, however, a solid film. All three of us here agreed it was quite good and watchable. I would give it a high seven but not quite an eight. The trouble with doing the same subject over and over is that it will be hard to come up with something new and different and it really didn't achieve that to a high degree. But it did produce a watchable and enjoyable film.
The Last Thing He Wanted (2020)
I liked it!
It was based on a book. I like movies that do not spell everything out for you. I could easily untangle it and other films have been more disjointed.
Acting was good. Some nice scenery and different settings made it interesting as well. Two good actors in the leads.
I could not understand the overall low score. I have watched far worse movies that have been awarded a much higher rating.
Would I change the ending? Maybe!
The Leisure Seeker (2017)
A beautiful journey
I loved, loved this movie. It hit the right spot for me. It provided emotional outlet from a scary world at the moment. The acting was superb and how could it not be with a pair of the best actors of all time. Love knows no boundaries, not memory loss nor illness, and solutions can be always found. Maybe I loved it because I am old but our daughter also sat through this with no complaints although it was my choice to watch this one. This could be any elderly couple who want to control their own lives and not be dependent on their children or fate. Helen Mirren and Donald Sutherland made a great team with beautiful chemistry between them. The scenery along the way was also pretty and life is complicated even when you are old. It is rich in emotion and it is a journey that has only one purpose.
Meet Joe Black (1998)
Two superb male leads
Anthony Hopkins, in my opinion, is one of the greatest actors of all time. He has a beautiful modulated speaking voice. Brad Pitt is also a really good actor so picture them together in a film. 'Because I could not stop for Death he kindly stopped for me' comes to mind. Beautifully paced drama filled with emotion and mood, great music, lovely characters makes this an unforgettable movie. If I saw it many years ago I had forgotten it. It stirs the emotions and takes you far away into your memories of love and life. This film is about a good man who leads a good life and brings out the best in other people with one exception. The three hours can be broken up now as it is on Netflix in 2020 when we have more time than we know what to do with being isolated and fearful. Most of all, I loved the presence of Anthony Hopkins about this film.
Undeserved scores due to bias
As soon as I watched the first four episodes I knew the show would not get awarded an accurate score by reviewers. I knew this because I have seen it before. Whether people realise it or not they are biased. It is like there will never be a gay female president.
I approached the series with an open mind. It has a good storyline. Acting is fine. The main protagonist is a comic with some good lines. It has layers with family life included. There is some mystery surrounding the mayor as well as questionable motivation from the blonde lady he is drawn to.
I don't like sci fi much but when I review one I try to look beyond that and mark the components of story, acting, setting, etc.
Sadly, many cannot do that. As a heterosexual I would rather the sexual tension was between male and female but if it is not then too bad I will look at it objectively just the same. But then again I am not prejudiced against gays I just don't happen to be one.
Stop punishing shows because they do not fit into your narrow little view of the world. A 1 or a 2 or even a 3 is not an appropriate result for this. One reviewer commented that Eddie was talented but because he/she did not approve of the role she was inhabiting then punished a good actor with a bad score.
Another one ridiculed the script which I suspect is more of a judgment on a gay police chief who also happens to be a woman. Even slamming her name, 'Tommy!'
It is actually quite good. Many other shows are not original but do not get slammed like this one. It is not totally predictable but reactions of biased reviewers certainly are.
Doctor Who (2005)
Jodie is best Dr Who ever
She brings a great presence and enthusiasm to the screen as our first woman Dr Who. Males who take issue with her get over yourselves and women support your female counterparts wherever they flourish. It is like a breath of fresh air. She is always full of energy and excited and enthused. She is attractive as well
Still writing great scripts for this show in 2020. I remember watching this as a family nearly fifty years ago and then for many years. I like the present ones especially the first two episodes of 2020. My favourite genre is mystery and suspense which this used plus the sci fi component which I tolerate. I hope Jodie continues in many future seasons.
Darkest Hour (2017)
The English do this so well, the subtlety and unspoken meaning...
This was a surprise and a most enjoyable film. Watching the people walking along and the way the camera followed them was inspiring. The English do subtle and inferred meanings so well. The atmosphere is brilliant. People are the power and the drive and this was made clear. You can see what Churchill is thinking and Oldman did the character credit. The rest of the cast were excellent as well.
Even though you know the history you are drawn in and feel the time and all its terror and foreboding.
The time in history is captured with the cinematography and much is told visually. Politics is ugly and that was obvious in the scenes in parliament. It made me think of Brexit which is even harder than this decision whether to go to all out war or try to negotiate a peace. I think Britain needs another Churchill right now.
We know his famous speech or one of them in this case but are still riveted to the power of the words. A slice of a moment in history not unknown but revisited with all the emotion and soul searching that happened in 1940.
Beautifully scripted, acted and shown on the big screen with a wonderful cast. We were moved!
Reviewers are biased, have a look and decide for yourself.
Normally when a show has three stars I give it a miss but our daughter was keen to watch this. So I expected the worst! I have to conclude that people have an issue with lesbians and it clouded their judgment.
Our daughter informed me that people were rubbishing this series a year ago because of the chosen star, Ruby Rose. Well, they must have been able to see into the future because it has just come out.
This is not my favourite genre but I try to be unbiased and judge what I see. As a retired English teacher I look for what is good and what has been done well and where it can be given some credit.
It is definitely watchable despite what some reviewers are saying. Should it have a mere three stars. Certainly not!
It is not ten stars either. But let's see where we can give it a mark. We have watched two episodes so far and we did not turn it off. Ruby Rose is interesting as Bat Woman and as a person. One reviewer criticised her speech but as a fellow Aussie I could not see an issue.
Her alter ego is quite centre stage and flamboyant in her acting style. A contrast to Bat Woman!
Dad and his second wife are also interesting and some mystery has been established there for each of those characters.
I think I am up to about five stars with characterisation and acting and evolving storyline.
It is not a cheap production obviously so they are expecting it to do well.
Should they have chosen a sexy female lead? No, why should they? She is actually quite beautiful and in her own words she is half masculine and half feminine. She likes to be both. She can do pretty or tough.
I like different as same old same old gets a bit boring.
I can only grade it on two episodes so I may change my mind as it progresses.
People say it is too banal and all done before. Many movies and series have been done over and over. Disney does it!
People have reviewed it on two episodes or even one. Do I want to binge watch this? No, but it is not my preferred genre.
I will give it 6 for the time being and wait to see how it unfolds.
Angel Has Fallen (2019)
People have become too picky and spoiled
This is a very good movie. It is action packed. We went late at night and no way would you fall asleep because it is action packed. Characters are relatable and surprising at times with good actors filling the roles. I like the family involvement and a new family member is introduced not including the baby. There is some humour too but it is mainly an action film. The ending is satisfying. The story is important and this told a story. One reviewer berated the movie based solely on camera work. Facial closeups are fine and notice they are used a lot lately. Warts and moles happen. Maybe it is to denote age or stating nothing is perfect. Angel has Fallen has lots of settings and one in particular is good especially when all hell breaks loose which is funny. There were a couple of jibes at the present president which would have been hard to miss. Anyone who got nothing out of this film and awarded it a 1 or 2 need to understand this this not being objective. We saw a film last week that we could have easily gone to sleep in easily and I gave it 5. But I looked for pluses. This one is visually exciting and tells a tale filled with characters who are well portrayed so there is plenty to like.
Ad Astra (2019)
Hard to stay awake
I kept waiting for some action as it was sooo slow. I kept looking at my husband to see if he could stay awake. I really like Brad Pitt but he was not given enough material to work with on this one. Having recently watched him in Once upon a time in Hollywood this was a disappointing movie for me. The other famous actors were good but again not much opportunity to show us much. I did not walk out. I do not believe in doing that but my food was more interesting than the screen. It dragged. Visually some parts were good. My score should be lower actually but I always condemn those people who give ones and twos because there is always skill and there are some elements that deserve a few marks. I was with an adult son and his reaction was the same. So none of us three were impressed.
Only female detectives should investigate rape
Once the two female detectives got hold of this crime it was handled competently and thoroughly and with compassion. My heart went out to the youngest victim who had to face so much adversity but must have been a survivor and a very intelligent young lady. This is based on a true story which makes it all the more compelling. I am watching the ratings go up and up as more people view it. The acting by the two women detectives is impressive. They use facial expression and body language as well as their voices to create wonderful characters. I sat up until 2 am to binge watch the whole series. It was like a good book you cannot put down. This is my genre so I loved it. I suspect others will appreciate it as well who normally do not follow police dramas. Across the states of America crime is not collected in one database or enough details for similarities to be picked up. Hopefully, they have fixed this now. It is one country after all. You feel satisfied at the end of the series that justice has been done. Another series would be good using the same team who finally got hold of this crime and never stopped until they solved it. I recommend it to anyone but especially crime buffs.
Built slowly but then it got exciting
For a good while it felt very ordinary but then the action started and it quickly improved. Just give it a chance and wait for it to take off. The whole story turns around about midway. Acting was good, storyline built, setting was exciting enough. There were a few talented actors who fitted into their characters very well. If it had not improved my rating would have been lower but not much lower. The reviewers who gave it a 4 or less were a bit unfair. If people walked out of the cinema as one reviewer said early on in the film they would not be equipped to review this particular movie fairly. There are some surprises and twists and lots of action.
Supremely clever but will be lost on many
If you are over 70 as I am you should be able to appreciate this one. Not everyone will though! I spoke to another old lady afterwards and she said she was unsure. I remember the time, the style, the people, etc. I like not being told what to think and not have everything spelt out for me. I have stated that many times. It is a beautiful masterpiece. I laughed when maybe I should not have but I could see the humour that was embedded in the spectacle before me. The acting is superb as you would expect. The two main characters are very different and portrayed to perfection. One is soft and sensitive and the other is tough and quiet. The last part of the film is a surprise and is very exciting and that is where I saw humour that probably shocked other cinema goers. Visually it shows the time which is set 50 years ago. Movies were big then too. Hollywood was in its hey day. Girls wore mini skirts. Pretty was in! Just soak up the atmosphere. It is a great film and people with a memory and discernment will recognise that.
Oh wow what a gem! Deep and dark suburbia!
Found this on Netflix and was curious. I did not even know Matt Damon was the lead male. What you believe is the main plot is not. The theme from my perspective is the innocence of childhood set against the worst of human nature. And what is more powerful? Of course, children are because they are hope and the future. This movie spoke to me and I guess some did not have this pleasure. They missed the message. It is also my favourite genre. There is no sci fi or robots or swearing or other things people now expect. The setting is not the present but back to the fifties before we had all this superb technology so the television is basic and children listen to stories on the wireless as well. Binary opposition, black and white, and what they signify can be gleaned. It would be a good study for high school but it is a bit gory in parts as there is violence. Matt Damon is in a different role in this one. He seems flat but that is his character which runs deep and dark. Racism rears its ugly head but there is something even darker or darker in a different way. The acting is spot on for the characters and the script. It is one to ponder as well. I will think about this one for a long time.
The Lion King (2019)
People are regurgitating reviewers
'Don't copy the original!' 'Keep to the Original!'
And on it goes, people spruiking what they hear and see by the professional reviewers.
I took my husband along today and warned him it was a remake, and basically the same, so he is did not go in with predetermined notions of wha it would be. I thought he probably won't like it, thinking it is a kiddy movie. It was not a small child's movie anyway.
Visually beautiful, with the natural beauty of Africa, and appropriate for the world we have been affecting. Sounds of Africa in the music and using the language of Africa. The music is the first thing my husband commented on.
The animals are so real and could be the actual African animals except we know they are not.
So what have we so far, beautiful cinematography and amazing music with the drums of Africa.
So, where's the problem? There is nothing or little that is new. That would have been deliberate. Empowering the female lion and making her more expressive, of course also deliberate. It is not a cartoon and less expression on the faces of the animals but it NOT a cartoon.
Judging a movie on what's it is not or does not even purport to be is not rational.
Have we become so jaded that we grade something on what we think it should be. It is a creation of its creators and they have made the movie they intended to be.
The animals are representations of people, some evil, some good, some funny, but all as intended by these particular creators.
I felt emotion that had been tapped before in the original. The music did that. The innocence of the cubs did as well. The beauty of the landscape did as well.
The message is the same...the circle of life. We are all connected.
Beecham House (2019)
Soap opera set in India
It is not bad. Just don't expect an exciting Indian adventure series. The acting is fine; the scenery and costumes are good and appropriate; writing could have a bit more drama added. It will appeal to some viewers and disappoint others. It is definitely watchable especially if you do not expect something riveting. There is romance, beauty and plenty of colour. There will be a second series as foretold by the ending of series one. It is not a 1 or a 2 but neither is it 9 or 10 rateable. The male lead is handsome and there are beautiful women so some eye candy for all. Enjoy or not depending on your expectations!
Misleading score awarded to this gem
You judge it on its own merits not what you decide it should be. It is funny and full of stars which alone is worth more than 5 or 6. Johnny Depp, Gwyneth Paltrow and Ewan McGregor amongst others would ensure a smooth production. They are professional actors with numerous credits and cannot be faulted in this film. There are a few scenes that were extremely funny. It has a good storyline and a satisfying conclusion. It is very English and maybe Americans are having a bit of a send up on British haughty systems of pomp and titles. It is a bit of fun and very entertaining with nothing offensive. It is clever and humorous and deserves a score of at least 8.
It is a mixture of comedy and drama set in Italy in WW2
The men who had to fly the planes were pawns of the generals who sent them out in droves to die. It is a send up of war and the illusion that the sacrifice of life makes a difference. It is satirical and different. It celebrates the decency in some who feel the loss and have to go on. There is no escape. You laugh and you cry with this series. Well acted and directed. Don't decide what it is until you watch it, a mistake made by many on here who award it a low score, and failed to understand the message or appreciate the art and what went into making this series. It is set in Italy so the people are not English speakers and they are caught up in what is happening as well. The planes would have been a big expense but needed for the realism. It is one man's journey through the minefield of war as a gunner and a reluctant one at that. He does not lose his humanity or his sense of humour despite all that happens. It is about loss and trying to make sense of something that makes no sense. The poor reviews show little appreciation for what goes into making a series like this. Maybe that is also a comment in itself, to fail to analyse or give credit for each aspect of the work. The character of George Clooney is not very likeable whereas he himself is still eye candy and an effective producer. The main actor is also easy on the eyes. The humour is fun and needed against a backdrop of war and loss.
Jessica Jones (2015)
All 3 seasons watched and 3 brings it all together
I enjoyed this series. One was a winner, two dipped a bit and 3 brought everything together and finished nicely. It was a satisfying conclusion to the series and the audience was left feeling content. Jessica's character was played very well and so was Trish's. The storyline throughout was well written although the second series was a bit of a let down after such a strong first season. The third season redeemed the show and was riveting watching. I love the PI solving crimes genre and the super powers did not detract from that but rather highlighted it. It is not light and breezy like other similar shows but rather darker with little comedy apart from the sardonic wit of Jessica herself. Maybe it is one you either love or hate, not sure! Not one for the kiddies or people who want light, airy fairy stuff, but it is to the taste of people who enjoy the serious and some depth in their viewing. The setting is sombre as well with not many bright colours used so may be a little depressing to some people who prefer comedies and colour on their screens. It is multi dimensional so allows for some thinking and reflection. If you agree with my description then it is one you will enjoy or at least be drawn to and watch all three series.
I love elephants and I loved the first Dumbo movie many years ago so I was not too hard to please on this one. Also loved how modern values informed the ending. The children were lovely and Dad was too; it was easy to relate to the characters. It is not supposed to be an adult movie but for children and the young at heart with a heart. Concepts needed to be kid friendly and nothing too scary or emotional to prevent children from being the main audience. A hint of romance thrown in as well and nice values for the kiddies.
Men in Black: International (2019)
It is a good movie
People should not be allowed to put ones and twos, it is ridiculous! I am not even a sci-fi fan. For Hemsworth alone, especially for the ladies, it is most enjoyable. The sexy deep voice and handsome face and bod is okay too, already halfway there. MIB is funny, has a decent storyline, excitement and throw in a few chases makes it more than watchable. The rest of the cast do a good job too at selling their characters. So what do we have: humour, eye candy, decent acting, fair enough script, so why the poor rating? Maybe we are getting spoiled and people are expecting too much. Imagine someone coming back from the dead who lived fifty years ago. Would they be so harsh with their scores? I actually enjoyed it more than I expected to. It was good to bring in a woman into the team of MIB too. The cute little side kick was a nice addition. The characters both alien and human were all good. Overall, a good solid film!
Crazy Rich Asians (2018)
Hollywood rather than Asian
It could have been an American sit com. Why not reflect the culture it is portraying rather than rush to Hollywood style predictable stereotype.
Where is the contrast with America? Muriel's Wedding was Aussie and My Big fat Greek Wedding was its namesake but this one was not what you would expect. It was disappointing not to see more of the culture it should have been portraying. The acting was good enough. Scenery was fine as well. I am not like people who give shows a 1 or 2 because they are not getting what they want. It is watchable and there are a few jokes and even some tears to round off emotions but it could have been better. It could have shown how Asians are unique and not copiers of Hollywood and America. The ending was a bit rushed as well and something needed to be inserted to explain how bringing someone to their knees is even forgivable. There would be no understanding or forgiveness and a token just would not achieve that!
The last episode pushed the rating to a 9
Is there a lesson in this series? I think there is which is ignore the scientists at your peril. It is not a pretty story or an unknown one but it is important to know it and understand what actually happened and why. Cutting costs that risk lives is not the right of a government. Hiding the truth from the public by any government is not acceptable. This is not so much enjoyable as informative but it is not a documentary. There are at least three well known actors who know their craft and deliver fine performances. It is well written and visually clear and descriptive.
Reviews with low scores are not fair as it is not supposed to be a thriller or an action series. It is explanatory and insightful and lets us know how this happened and also why. I thought of an analogy with the scientists warning about climate change and that we must act now rather than later. We have done so much damage to the environment like was illustrated in this series and for no other reason than greed. Power also caused this and that can also be seen in our present world. Human beings are so flawed. The last episode was the best with the court room scene so for the people who stopped watching after one or two episodes and then gave it a low score you were unfair because it needed to be analysed and understood in its entirety.
Red Joan (2018)
Loosely based on a true story not a documentary!
People review movies and series based on what they want or expect and decide it should be. Review on what has been offered not on what you decide it should be. People complain that it is not historically accurate when it is a story based on something but using poetic licence to make a film with another slant. This is a good film. What would you expect from Judi Dench? She is a national treasure and a gift to the world. She narrates the story of her life in this film, well her student days and her working life at least. She has two loves who are very different from each other. Her younger self is played by a competent actress as well whose character is conflicted at times. People really need to allow the creators of these shows to deliver their art in the form that they choose. The audience for this would be adult and people who are happy to see a thoughtful reflection on a life not a wild ride or historical documentary. The acting is excellent, the setting is grey, cloudy England and the story is very interesting and keeps you involved. This movie deserves a much higher score with less negativity than it has received here.
Rim of the World (2019)
What is wrong with people/reviewers?!
It is a children's adventure story. Three adults watched it here and none of us agree with the scathing reviews. It is a good movie to watch with older children and the family can know it is not filled with violence or sexual scenes or bad language. The acting is fine unlike what reviewer said about it being over the top and based on their ethnicities. They are kids each with a story of loss who come together and are able to work together to help complete a mission. They are not seasoned actors but kids who do a good job with their individual characters. We did not turn it off but wanted to see it through to the end. Harsh reviews say more about the reviewer who cannot be bothered to look for what has been done well or reasonably okay. The story is fine for the intended audience who can accept a bit of exaggeration or suspending their disbelief and just go with the journey. Who should watch it? Families with young teens and a bit younger but not little children. Didn't expect a blockbuster which it does not boast to be anyway, but a family movie with some sci fi and visual effects. Good one for a weekend night with some pizza!
