Great show, spoiled by graphic debauchery
24 May 2020
I really liked the story idea, the actors, the characters, the setting, the imagination, and the overall style and tone of this show.

Unfortunately, the creators also seem to think I enjoy watching extensive graphic debauchery. It wasn't entertaining.

I binge-watched the first four episodes yesterday before I gave up. I think it will be another day or two before the filthy feeling leaves my mind and spirit.

Not my style
25 January 2020
I watched the first few episodes. Not my style, I guess. I'm more of a Lord of the Rings and sci fi person, and I hated the one episode of Game of Thrones I saw.

This show just wasn't interesting enough for me. The main guy has no emotions - so basic. Boring. The most interesting character was killed in the first episode. Also way too much sex and violence. R-rated stuff is bad for my soul.

Slow but not unsatisfying
7 December 2019
I am a sci-fi fan and I'm glad I saw this movie at least once. But the movie moves pretty slow and I'm not sure I want to watch it again. The look and SFX were gorgeous, and the story kept me interested enough until the end. There were one or two exciting action sequences. The science is pretty iffy, including main plot points. Overall, I wish it had been less low-key and that the ending gave more payoff for the two hours I spent.

Wonderful
21 October 2019
I've only watched the first three episodes so far, but they have been wonderful. Non-cynical, real. I was smiling and sometimes crying during each of them.

Debunked theory
21 October 2019
The Book of Mormon is a wonderful book. Unfortunately, the origin theory discussed in this production has been debunked by serious Mormon scholars. So there's nothing to see here.

Ultimately tedious and uninteresting
7 October 2019
I stuck it out for the first few episodes and it got interesting. But by the end of the second season I was ready to throw in the towel. The story appeared to be heading in an annoying direction, and none of the characters ever had their "save the cat" moment that made me care about them. Also, so much violence in each episode. The creators of this show must think people enjoy blood and gore.

Creepy waste of time
30 August 2019
I gave this a try because of the big name actors and the topical setting. It was a waste of time. And a creepy story. After watching this, Amazon Prime recommendations now wants to show me more porn. I wish my eyeballs had never been exposed to this.

Fun action space opera
2 August 2019
I thought this movie was a lot of fun, including the second time I saw it just now. I've read the criticisms and I don't agree. If you don't understand the plot, you aren't paying attention. I cared about the main characters and the movie kept me in suspense. Maybe people are getting tired of these kinds of movies - if this had come out 20 years ago it would have gotten better ratings. I'm taking one star off because I fast forwarded through some of the action at parts - "action" is tedious for me these days.

A joy for a fan like me
1 August 2019
The production was maybe a bit amateurish, but nonetheless I thoroughly enjoyed this. I don't usually watch "making of" docs because it pops the fantasy bubble of the movie. But I'm glad I made an exception here.

Yuck - depraved story
1 August 2019
A depraved story. Yuck. I guess the story is kind of clever, etc. Whatever. I did not enjoy being in the world of this movie. Gratuitous sex and violence too. What a waste of my time to watch this and of resources to create this movie.

Slow start, but great sci fi by the end
29 July 2019
I began losing interest during the first part of the show and I almost gave up on it. But I then saw reviews saying how it ends well, so I gave it another try. I'm glad I did. If you like mysteries and plot twists, keep going - the movie gets better. By the end I decided this was actually a great piece of thought-provoking sci fi.

I hate it
26 July 2019
A dark, nihilistic show about anti-superheroes. I hate it.

I give it a couple stars for wit and production values. But this is the opposite of entertainment for me, and represents a bad trend.

I love superheroes films because they are heroes, which means they work to help people and stand up for what is good and right. This show just wants to tear all that down in some kind of adolescent impulse.

Very good

This is a very good movie. Don't listen to cynical professional critics. You don't have to really know anything about Tolkien's books to enjoy this movie.

Thought-provoking

The Black Mirror series is a little too dark and violent for my taste, and this was no exception. But it was intriguing.

Not very Star Trek, but still entertaining
13 December 2018
As a long-term Trek fan, this show is an interesting case.

I like a lot of things about this show. However, I'm very disappointed they made half the episodes TV-MA and most of the rest strong TV-14. This does not make it more entertaining for me, but the opposite. Star Trek has never had to include graphic stuff to be good - that's almost the whole point of the show.

What I've always liked about the Star Trek is the optimism and the absence of cynicism. ST: Discovery doesn't feel like past Star Trek. The look is darker, the story is darker, the characters are darker.

If you think Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Voyager were quintessential Star Trek, then this new ST: Discovery is anti-Star Trek. No one acts very Star Fleet - they are constantly disobeying orders. They are all flawed. Most of the characters are jerks, although that changes somewhat as the season goes on. The captain in this show would have been, in past TV series, the "problem captain" causing trouble that Captain Picard or Janeway had to deal with.

When I saw the first several episodes of the show I thought, "This is actually what you would get if you found people to make a show who had only watched a couple of the recent Star Trek action movies, but didn't know anything about all the Star Trek TV series before that." Then I found out that is basically what happened.

However, what Star Trek needs at this point is fresh approaches. This show provides that. I find myself enjoying the show a lot, even though I may decide to skip all the TV-MA episodes and just read summaries. The look of the show is spectacular, so can overlook that it doesn't look very Star Trek to me. The characters and situations are engaging. Sure, the Klingons are as tedious as they always have been - I'm hoping for less and less Klingon as the show goes forward. But at least they look like aliens, instead of amped up Rastafarians from earth.

So I have big hopes for this series, and now also all the other new Trek shows that CBS recently announced. It's an absolute annoyance that you can only get this through CBS suscription streaming. But if you make something good enough, people will do what it takes to get it.

Do I miss the old Star Trek, with its emphasis on exploration and a more evolved future? Yes, very much. Let's hope these new action Trek's aren't the only kind of Trek we get from now on.

But we're talking now about Discovery. It's entertaining and different, so I like it. But please no more TV-MA.

The First (2018)

Marketing gone terribly wrong
15 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I've watched the first episode so far. It wasn't bad. The rest of the show appears to be congressional hearings, family drama, etc. And then maybe the last episode they finally blast off for Mars....? But if you market a new show with a cool picture of rocket leaving earth and call it "The First (Person on Mars)," you better make it a show about people going to Mars. Make the setting Mars. As it is, I fear there will be a terrible backlash on this show, which may kill it during the first season. Diehard fans of something (like sci fi geeks, as I am) get very angry when you market a show as sci if and instead make it an earthbound drama. The reason I think there might be a big backlash is that this show *sounds * like it's going to be exactly what many sci fi fans have been waiting for - an intelligent, well-done story of the first people on Mars. So this show is setting up fans for that, and they will be all the more disappointed. But can we hope that Season 2 will be more like what we expected? If the show finally gets to Mars, it could easily become that show.

One of the best Marvel movies
3 April 2018
This was a great movie. I rank it among my top favorite Marvel movies, which include the first Avengers and the first Guardians of the Galaxy movies.

An interesting, original story that keep me engaged the whole time. One thing that really impressed me was how all the fighting was made very meaningful. Often with these movies I get bored with the fight scenes. So tedious. You know who will win, just get it over with. However, somehow with this movie I cared about each of the fights, and I was on the edge of my seat.

It was very interesting to see an all-black (mostly) cast, and to see the African theme. I was impressed with the depth and meta aspect too - it presents two possible ways to address injustice - which path will these people choose? Great lessons here, besides just action and adventure.

For such a great movie, how to explain all the user ratings of 1, 2 and 3? It certainly doesn't deserve those. I leave it to you to imagine why some of these people are rating it so artificially low.
