Interesting concept, but poor execution.
I have been disappointed in this show for a while now. I loved the first 4 seasons. Seasons 5 and 6 were flawed, but I can tolerate some kind of bad moments to get to some of the best moments in tv history. Like Hardhome, The Door, Battle of the B, and The Winds of Winter. Season 7 however just disappointed me. It wasn't the worst season of tv I have ever seen, but it just fell flat. It had a few alright moments, but nothing really stellar. So I was disappointed but still wanted to keep watching, because I loved the show alot in the beginning. The first episode of this season was as expected. It wasnt terrible, but wasnt really good either. This episode frustrated me far more however. It had the potential to be one of the best. One thing that I enjoyed about the earlier seasons were the characters and character moments. However it seems the newer seasons don't have this. They have the same cinematic quality as the early seasons, but the characters feel like they were written by a 16 year old fangirl. They are caricatures of what they once were. There were a few semi-decent scenes in this, but as a whole, I was just frustrated during this episode. Seeing these caricatures of characters that I once loved made me angry, because it made me think of the episode this could have been if the writers still had a grasp on what made the characters good to begin with. It could have been one of my favourite episodes of the show. Based on the rating it looks like a lot of people disagree with me, but oh well.
