Sleepy Hollow (1999)
this film is good, fun and proves what a great actor Johnny Depp can be. there is not a single bad casting choice in the whole movie and several of the characters are really well acted. Miranda Richardson is superb and Christina Ricci has proved that she is growing into not only a beautiful young lady but also a fine actor to boot. the horror and violence are almost cartoon like thus making this film not scary at all and the action scenes are simply stunning. i do not know where they filmed this but the setting is eerily beautiful and the costume department did a phenomenal job all the way through. I have not read the novel or do i know if there are more stories with Ichabod Crane but it would be great to see Johnny Depp play this role again.
2hrs of lets blow everything up
This film is fun, with an easy plot to follow and a great soundtrack. the film is basically a 2hour long stunt. the one major criticism i have is that Asia Argento should stick to letting Daddy chop her up in his movies instead of trying to be a serious actress. The film is made all the better on a personal level in the fact that Rammstein make a live appearance at the beginning of the film. Vin Diesel has the charisma and potential to be the next big action movie star and has a really cool voice. Samuel Jackson gets to play his typical gruff shouting role that he has made his own and there are several stunts that are truly breathtaking, it is just sad that one of these led to the stuntman performing it's death.
Body Slam (1986)
This is so terrible it is brilliant
I am big wrestling fan and a big rock music fan so i think this film only made it into my collection for those two reasons. saying that it is so bad that it is great. with Cameo's from some really great wrestlers and a most unusual cast this film is a must see even if you only watch it once. Dirk Benedict was a regular in two of the most cheesy TV Series of all time (Battlestar Galactica and the A team) so it is no wonder that he will never be a major movie star. Roddy Piper has made some good and some truly awful films but you have to admire his perseverance. he is still one of the best wrestlers never to be world champion. Tanya Roberts was a huge fantasy of mine in my teens so it was nice to see her do a film that didn't involve her taking her clothes off. from a Wrestling Fan point of view it was fun to see Rikishi in his early days as a wrestler as well.
Boys own adventure with a twist
I must confess to be a comic to film anorak. i hadn't read the comic of this one but what a great couple of hours. it is also the first boys own movie that i know a lot of women enjoy. the cast is inspired from the very enigmatic (Sean Connery and Stuart Townsend) to the unusual choices for Nemo and Mina Harker. The whole idea behind it was fascinating and gives them so much scope for a whole series of leagues from varying points throughout history. the effects on Skinner are breathtaking and the CGI for MR Hyde was awesome. not sure what the rating for this film is but i bet my 10 year old daughter and 8 year old nephew would love it.
Bridget Jones's Diary (2001)
I want to Marry Bridget
Okay, weird film for a bloke to love but it is great. I really like Renee Zelwegger a lot and being 30 something myself and at the time this came out single, i can really relate to it. this film has me in stitches all the way through, Hugh Grant is great as a bad guy and I just love Shirley Henderson, her character really makes you want to look after her. Bridget is everyone one of my ex girlfriends and at the same time none of them. Helen Fielding is a very clever writer, i think any Thirty-something person (male or female) that has had a rough or bad relationship can relate to this movie. a definite must own. As Bridget i could easily fall for Renee Zelwegger, she is the "Normal" woman my age that i would love settle down with. I must also add tha Jim Broadbent is great in this film. a true Brit star actor.
what a stirring vampire movie.
Either i need psychiatric help or this film has some intense sub-liminal erotic undertones. forgetting this point it is just a really good vampire movie, fairly true to the book and has a great cast. Being English i am appalled that Gary Oldman does not get better recognition, he is easily as good if not better an Actor than most Brits. Anthony Hopkins is almost comical in this film and you would never guess that Winona Ryder and Keannu Reeves are not English. i am a big Keannu fan and think this is a good early film for him. Another good British actor, Cary Elwes, has a supporting role, and Sadie Frost is just gorgeous in this film.
Con Air (1997)
A really good action flick
The only reason I didn't give this 10 was because of the lack of female stars but then what do you expect from a movie about a bunch of prisoners on a aeroplane? the thing that amazed me about this film is that it is essentially a prison movie but they manage to fit a car chase and a shoot out. this film made me a John Malkovich fan and he has some of the greatest one liners in any movie. John Cusack is possibly one of the most underrated actors anywhere and Nicolas Cage does what he does best, plays a good guy with a wicked sense of humour. with supporting roles for two truly great actors, Ving Rhames and Steve Buscemi this film works on every level.
Another movie that 10 out of 10 doesn't begin to do justice!!
What a fantastic film. truly a stroke of genius for Disney. i must have seen this over 100 times, most of my friends and myself are constantly quoting it. Johnny Depp totally steals the film as Captain Jack Sparrow and this role has truly cemented him as one of my 4 favourite living actors. (the other 3 being Keannu Reeves, Nicolas Cage and Clint Eastwood). There isn't a weak character or a poorly played part in the film. The bit where Jack Sparrow is running and being shot at and is trying to bat the bullets out the way with the palm of his hand makes me cry with laughter every time i watch it. Geoffrey Rush is deeply inspired as Barbossa and Kiera Knightley is one of the brightest English roses around. A must see for any movie fan who wants a good story, good acting and a few good laughs along the way!
The Crow (1994)
the best Gothic comic book movie ever made
This movie is fantastic. plain and simple. Brandon Lee delivers his lines to the point they were instantly memorable after seeing the film only once. The casting of both Michael Wincott and Tony Todd was inspired as these two guys have two of the most instantly recognisable voices in the movie industry. If i could ever be a movie or a lead in a film this would be it. I was initially put off the idea of the movie as i am a big fan of the graphic novel and there was an awful lot of hype around this film on its release. this proved to be my loss as i have only seen the film on the small screen. however i now have the 2 disc special edition DVD and watched it 3 times in succession the day i bought it and must have watched it at least 100 times since. my own personal opinion is that a movie should suspend disbelief, capture the imagination which this does in spades. it is truly a film that you can lose a couple of hours watching and at the end feel like you have spent a worthwhile couple of hours. would recommend this to anybody.
A Matter of Life and Death (1946)
my all time favourite film
I first see this film almost 21 years ago when it was an ITV (before the days of cable and satellite) Matinée. i was off School with the Mumps and i was totally wrapped in the film. i have had it on bought video for about 10 years and i want to obtain a DVD copy of it. David Niven is my all time favourite actor and i think it is a travesty that he was over looked so many times when the Oscars came around. i also think that the queen should have knighted him as he easily did as much for the movie industry if not more than Sean Connery or Anthony Hopkins. the way the film switches from black and white to colour and back again is well done and the film has such stellar actors as Roger Livesy, Marius Goring and an early appearance from Richard Attenborough.
