Having watched a lot of movies in many different languages, and reading about them, I feel like I now have a proper sense of what good movies are. In my opinion, these movies are some of the best movies produced in the history of Nepali movies industry, the movies that will just stay in our brains long after 'The End'. These are the movies that made strong impact to me and I hope it does same to you. The list is short but I hope, it gets longer and better. I'm sure, if you watch all the movies in this list, your perception towards Nepali movies will change.
Chhakka Panja 3 (2018)
I liked it more than both the previous ones
First movie was average; second one, disaster; however, this third movie by Chhakka Panja team has really touched my heart. Maybe, it's just because I love movies about socio-political changes. Some of my favorites in this genre include, Anil Kapoor's 'Nayak', Mahesh Babu's 'Srimanthudu' and a recent one 'Bharat Ane Nenu'. These all movies were about the social and political changes where the main protagonist uses his wits and strength for the betterment of the society they are living in.
(Possible Spoilers ahead) While Chhakka Panja 3 tries the same with a female protagonist, she fails horribly unlike the ones I've mentioned. And this was what hit me hard. A dialogue in the film says, "It's like a curse, if today's youths are made to stay in the country". And yet, when she was about to leave the country, she notices the unpleasant condition of the school where her father is the headmaster. She decided to stay in order the bring changes, and made decisions she would never do otherwise. Her sacrifice goes unnoticed and she is constantly opposed for her right doings. This depiction of the society was one of the best I've ever seen in a Nepali movie industry.
I may not be able to judge the technical flaws of the movie as other reviewers are mentioning. But as an avid movie goer, I would say, this movie is better than most movies in the Nepali film industry and absolutely better than the previous ones.
Truth is bitter. But when tampered, it becomes tasteless.
The movie tries to show the reality of a life of a common man. But the politics in it makes this movie - not so real. Everything was believable at first. The song 'Sukha Dukha' still gets my eyes wet. The movie is too emotional and relatable, but it got limited to the first half. Once the politics came in, the movie became a fictitious drama and I got disconnected with the character once and for all.
I respect the effort the team has made in this movie. But repeating the same thing starts getting boring no matter how good it is. Still, I wish to see the life of other common man in different context. Keep producing more of them with better story-lines.
My rating - 8/10 for amazing visuals and the performance.
Doctor Strange (2016)
This is not just a movie. This is an experience.
Do you remember the scene when Ariadne folds the Paris city in 2010 'Inception'? If yes, and you think that scene was breathtaking, watch 'Doctor Strange'. You'll find plenty more of such effects and these scenes are super-breathtaking.
Some major parts of the movie were shot in my hometown (Kathmandu, Nepal). Except for the scenes of Swayambhunath, Pashupatinath and some places, even I could not recognize the locations. Maybe because they were recreated with special effects and the result was superb. It is a matter of pride for us, when a big budget Hollywood movie chooses Nepali Architecture for their set. I am glad, I got to see it and experience it. Thanks for the whole movie team.
Story-wise, the movie seems average. The movies with the similar story are in abundance. But I know, those similar movies may never have special effects as good as this. How often do you get to see the whole street rotate? How often do you get to see the elements of the building constantly moving during the fight scene? How often do you get to see the city split, travel in fourth dimension? How often do fantasy and sci-fi blend so well that we have to find a new word for it?
The effects are executed very well. One might not enjoy it in small screen but while it's still playing in the theatres, 'Doctor Strange' is a must watch. Don't miss the chance to experience it. I highly recommend it.
Pashupati Prasad (2016)
Happy endings are for films. THIS is what actually happens in real.
The final sequence without any dialogue kept me speechless. The credits started to roll and I was there sitting totally heart-broken. It kept me thinking. Is our life as meaningless as of him? I wonder how people would react to this.
The sheer beauty of this film is, it portrays the reality of our life. A person need not have a very great aim but a simple one is enough to keep their life moving. Having someone to call a family, a friend to spend time with, a person to fall in love and a general vision of what to do with life, are some simple things that motivate us to keep going.
Pashupati Prasad never accepted defeat. He considered his family family although he got cheated. He loved a mother as a son although he was not born to her. However betrayed and helpless he felt, he did not back away. He may not be satisfied with his life but he was living it. Simple thing it may be, but the movie shows this thing very beautifully and made us connected to the character.
However, tragedy is always lurking around the corner ready to make use of any chance it gets. Things are left incomplete. Life ends meaningless. This is reality. The sooner we realize this, the better person we may become. The film portrays these things very well setting an example of Pashupatinath area, symbolizing 'all men must die'.
"Pashupati Prasad" can be considered one of the best movies in the history of Nepali cinema. My rating - 8/10
I never heard a thing about this movie before watching, but it felt like the long wait is over...
I'm a chess fan (not a good player however).
One day, while I was playing chess, a thought came into my mind, "What if the game I'm playing is happening for real somewhere?" Then it was obvious, I searched for the movies with similar theme but couldn't get one. The best I could find was "The Seventh Seal" by Ingmar Bergman which was nowhere near to the one in my mind.
I knew nothing about 'WAZIR' before watching, except it was a chess movie. I'm a chess fan, so, I would have never missed this movie no matter good or bad. I wasn't expecting more either. But, after watching it, my mind was completely blown away. My long wait has been fulfilled. THIS is the best chess movie I've ever seen.
At some points, I felt errors in storytelling (wished they hadn't done it this way). But those were nothing compared to the whole package. The performances were good. The whole script is excellent. Technically, it felt real, which is also a good thing. I'm sure this movie will leave a mark in Bollywood, with its significance growing over time.
This movie came as a surprise which made me experience that, if a movie comes as a surprise, that movie is going to be in your best movies list.
Thanks for the whole team of WAZIR for delivering us this movie. Much appreciated.
Inside Out (2015)
Heart touching story of The Brain
Nothing in the world is as powerful as emotions. Whatever we do, we do because we have emotions, either that be joy, sadness, fear, disgust or anger. These emotions are the key driving forces of our brain; our brains are controlled by them. Without one, the others can't continue on properly.
This simple thing about ourselves is portrayed very well in the movie by Pete Docter; it was quite emotional. The concept behind the movie touched my heart. It brought back the memories of my childhood. It reminded me how I used to think/feel as a child. I can't get them back now, but to some extent, this movie does the job. I'm a child once again. I can feel such strong emotions that make me laugh, or cry. The last time I felt the same was while watching 'Toy Story 3'. 'Inside Out' is simply one of the brilliant animated features by Pixar.
I waited a long time for this movie to be released. I expected it to be good one when I saw the trailer. However, it exceeded my expectations. It was quite heart touching that I couldn't resist myself giving this movie a 10 star. It's an excellent movie with a brilliant concept.
Ex Machina (2014)
I believe, that's what sci-fi movies are for...
Today, we are on the verge of technological innovations. What we do, shapes the future. Our ideas, our skills, our talent, everything will take some form. It's only the matter of time. We create, we build, we explore. I believe, this is what sci-fi movies are for. "Exploring the possibilities and going beyond the limit." The movie does the fantastic job. It explores the possibility of Artificial Intelligence. Not only that, the sensation of 'not so distant future' brought by the indoor spaces is worth mentioning. I don't know about any other technical stuffs but the movie felt real when I was watching it. And I guess, that's a kind of great achievement for the creators of the movie.
I don't recommend this movie if you are a fast-paced-action-movie lover who wants entertainment-entertainment-entertainment. But, for the true fan of the cinematic creation who want to immerse themselves in the world of cinema, this movie is a "It's not that you must watch it, but you better don't miss it" movie. Because lots of surprises are on the way.
No matter how lengthy the movie becomes, they should not have split it in two.
The quality was good, the performance, the visual effects, the background music, everything. But it was just like a trailer of the whole Mockingjay movie. (No matter how good the trailer is, movie determines everything)
It was actually a bad decision to split the movie in two parts and now, we have the result. I know it's all for earning more, but take examples of "Lord of the Rings", "Hobbit", "GodFather", they're all lengthy movies but successful ones. Mockingjay had that potential but, the splitting not only shortened the movie length but also decreased its appreciation.
However, I personally liked the movie. I didn't find any useless moments here. It always goes unsaid that book is better, but this movie does justice to the book more than the previous ones.
I don't recommend this movie just now. Wait until the Part 2 gets released. Then watch both the movies together. Only then you'll truly enjoy "The Hunger Games : Mockingjay".
Concept is the best...
"Human beings using 100% cerebral capacity" is a nice concept to make a movie and the movie is just satisfactory.
It talks about using the intellectual capacity and shows far more than we can imagine (One thing I liked was, being able to control human and things around the person. How come we never thought about that? We can only think of having control over self). But then, I don't think 100% use of cerebral capacity will provide the access to the past unless the person studies about it or has experienced i.e. if it was already in the brain.
However, if 100% capacity in the movie was used for exploring unknown rather than recollecting the known, it would have been the best Sci-fi. But here, it's a more like fantasy/superhero movie.
The main concept is good. So is the performance and visual effects. But I find the story someway out of track. However, one can take it as out-of-the-box thinking. Sci-fi fans ought to watch this movie, it should be entertaining. I recommend it.
Slightly different than the usual romantic action movies...
The only thing you'll want to see in the movies like this is "Action" plus some thrill. More or less, this movie provides exactly the same. They've already made it clear that this is a South-Indian remake. If you still have different expectations, then it's sure to disappoint you.
Personally, I liked the movie. Specially, the plot, simple yet exciting. If it was just a romantic action movie, I would be disappointed. But the story of a person in search of a 'Kick', something he wants but don't exactly know what, made the story exciting. Bollywood won't get rid of overacting soon, it has become a problem. But the fun and some twists made the movie different.
If you love watching critically acclaimed, award winning movies, this one is not for you. But if you are action thrill lover and you want to get entertained, this movie is exactly your type.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)
Best version of Spiderman till date...
The original trilogy seemed incomplete but now, that incompleteness is completed by this new one. I love the background story of Spiderman shown in this movie, at least it has got one unlike the original. The story of how Peter Parker ended up with his Uncle and Aunt, the story of why "Peter Parker" is the only one who could be Spiderman and no-one else. It all feels complete now. A satisfactory plot for a superhero movie.
Talking about the performances, I like the new Peter Parker, humorous and entertainer. I've started to feel the original 'Peter Parker' was actually boring. Really good job by the actors here. And with that SuperVillian : 'Electro', the movie becomes one of the best SuperHero movies. Visual effects are quite good and the movie is perfectly entertaining. For me, this is the best version of Spiderman movie till now. I don't care what the critics have to say, this movie is a good one.
God's Not Dead (2014)
Tried their best, but couldn't get the best out of it.
The movie takes the philosophical approach to prove the existence of God and I respect the effort they've made. While this movie helps the theists to keep on their faith, it doesn't quite seem to convince the atheists into believing it. And they've done it too Christian that they've tried to show : 'Christianity is the best religion in the world'. This is, I think, the main reason behind the negative critical reviews of this movie. Else, the performance by the actors and other technical aspects are acceptable.
My saying: the movie tries something, but couldn't come to its best. Some dialogues are very good but the whole movie couldn't be. If you are a true believer in God or you want to discuss God with other people, then give this movie a try.
Need for Speed (2014)
Good one as a racing movie...
Though the movie is a story of friendship and emotions, it's more about racing, fast cars, police chase, accidents, crashes, everything I expected from a racing movie. This is one of the best game adaptations I've ever watched.
Keeping aside the weak script, everything else in the movie seemed perfect. From the actors' performances to the locations plus the background music, it all seemed well connected. And those cars, with the real stunts and no CGI, that's great.
Looking for a racing movie or a car movie? This is it. More or less, it matches the standards of the Fast and Furious series. I am looking forward to the movies of this type. Action lovers are really gonna like this. And for the fan of cars and racing, you're gonna fall in love with this movie.
Heaven Is for Real (2014)
Loved the concept...
When it comes talking about heaven and hell, we just start ignoring the fact that they might exist. Everyone has heard about it, but nobody wants to believe in its existence. Well, I doubt myself. Sometimes, I want to believe in it but something always stops me from doing so. The movie talks about it, but it's only from a Christian's point of view.
I liked the concept of the movie. They don't actually make us believe in the existence of heaven (or hell), but the good thing about the movie is that, they've kept an effort to show how the world would react when something extraordinary happens. Whatever, the story and the concept touched my heart. It would have been better if they had gone deeper than this. They could have taken the lines of Bible or so, in order to have a factual conversations.
Movie says, it's based on a true story but when there's talking about Jesus, it becomes a Christian's story, not universal. It's not a must watch movie but I would recommend it. I say, we've always watched Sci-Fi movies when we know they are not true, why don't we give a try to some spiritual movies? For most of the people today, they would be only as true as the sci-fi. There's no any magic in the story, just some story of miracles. What if it was 'Your' story? How would you make people believe in you encountering miracles?
While the movie may not be at it best, it's not bad for a one time viewing. My rating would be 7 for the story, acting, dialogues and well, because it has some sort of influence to the society...
Simply an action movie, nothing new...
This movie will keep you interested only if you are the action lover. There's actually nothing new in the story. But one can always watch it as a time pass action flick. It's a revenge story without intense action and thrill. Although the movie is a cheap one, it doesn't look that way. The storytelling feels a bit messy at some parts but the movie is pleasant because of it's simplicity. Both the hero job and villain job are okay and it's what needed for an action movie. Visually, the movie is quite peaceful. For me, it was just an average movie, nothing more, nothing less. There are lot better movies than this, and you won't lose anything if you miss it.
Krazzy 4 (2008)
Some fun, some emotions. But not in a proper way...
"Everyone thinks they are crazy but they're not." It is the main theme the movie is trying to show. 4 mental patients and watching their effort to rescue their kidnapped doctor is somewhat interesting but I don't see any way to say that this movie is a good one. This movie was made by crazy people for the crazy people. I don't blame actors for this, because they have done the good job. Story was fine. But, I didn't really like the dialogs at the ending scene of the movie. That was totally no fun, useless. I enjoyed while watching the movie, but not much when I left. The whole movie wasn't as good as the opening scene. But, the movie is not that bad for one time viewing.
Cube 2: Hypercube (2002)
If you love Physics, this movie is for you.
First, let's get the basic idea. Cube is made of 6 squares. Hypercube (Tesseract) is made of 8 cubes. The movie title itself is the best one for the 'Cube' sequel as 'Hypercube' represents further dimension than that of Cube.
Summary of the movie says, the people trapped in the rooms are in a strange fourth dimension where our laws of physics don't apply. Truly, the laws we see in real life don't apply in the movie. The Gravity changes the direction in different rooms. There are rooms with variable time speed and also, the concept of Parallel Universe is applied.
Most of the sci-fi movies use scientific facts in a wrong way that no science can prove how that happened. Maybe that's why they are called sci-fi. But this movie is not that type. Almost everything shown in this movie are theoretically proved. The movie seems completely a fiction. But everything shown in the movie have relation with physics and concepts derived from physics. 'Time' or 'Tesseract', both are the fourth dimensional concepts. The variation of the time is explained by the Theory of Relativity. Concept of Parallel universe and annihilation comes from the study of the Anti-matters.
Most critics are not the students of Physics. So, they may say that the movie is a disaster but if you like Physics, you're gonna like this movie. The film makers have really kept an effort to implement the theoritical concepts of Physics. If not, you can always accept this as a good science fiction thriller movie. The movie's nice and I won't regret saying this.
Aashiqui 2 (2013)
Heart touching LoveStory
My sister watched this movie first. And she told me to have a handkerchief before watching the movie. Reason: the movie is so emotional that she thought I won't be able to control my tears. It made me too excited and I watched it. While watching, I kept on thinking that my sister had lied because nothing such happen. But suddenly, in a scene where Aarohi talks to RJ's uncle saying that she was ready to leave everything to get into RJ's world (sharab ki duniya), I couldn't help myself. And I realized my sister was right to some extent.
The performances by the new comers are great. Director has also done quite a good job. The movie is romantic. My friends say that it's too much romantic (Aarohi... Kuch nahi, bus yuhi) and they don't like the way the movie ended. But for me, despite some mistakes, everything's fine, the whole movie is nice. Background music and songs are awesome, gonna be favorites for everyone. I recommend don't listen to critics, you watch it.
Escape Plan (2013)
It's better than expected...
As soon as I read the plot summary, I realized that this movie would be somehow related to the architecture of prison. And here it is. The movie helped me learn more about prison design. As an architecture student, I found this movie quite interesting.
I expected this movie to be an action movie with a simple storyline. But it is more. Some twists in the movie made it really interesting. Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger have done quite good job: one of the reasons to like this movie. The movie is not too fast paced as their other movies, yet it's not boring. The prison is well designed as escape proof. So, the plan for escape is worth watching.
The movie somehow reminds me of "The Shawshank Redemption". 'Ray Breslin' to 'Andy Dufresne', 'Emil Rottmayer' to 'Red', and so on. The movie may not be as good as "The Shawshank Redemption" but in some way, it's the best.
Personally, I enjoyed watching the movie and so, I recommend this movie to mostly, action lovers and designers. Watch it, you'll like it!
Nowhere near to expectation
I am a huge fan of cars and related movies. And I love Selena Gomez. But this movie was an absolute disappointment for me. My expectations were higher. The movie is an example of poor screenplay. No moral, no fun. Just keep watching the same car running away from police for no good reason. I can't understand what the main plot of the movie is, and I'm not interested to learn that either. The final twist is horrible. I'm giving this movie a rating of 4 just because of Selena and the Car. Else, the movie would be just 1 or 2 starred. I don't wanna say Selena is a bad actress but she should pick up good movies and act good. I'm still looking forward to her movies.
It's one of my personal favorites.
I have completed the game POP Warrior Within and POP The Two Thrones. I didn't play Sands of Time and haven't played Forgotten Sands either. But watching movie was really a fun for me. I have it on my computer and I watch it often. Normally, I like the movies relating time manipulation. The simple concept of manipulating time in POP is just to reverse it, no any traveling to past or future like in any other movies. This is the part, I like the most about it. I don't care its IMDb rating. No matter how much it gets, this movie will remain one of my favorites forever.
My first impression on Jake Gyllenhaal as Dastan was not good. But as the story moved on, I found the character interesting. He was almost like the prince in the game, a good swordsman and an athlete. I guess, Tamina (Gemma Arterton) from movie is actually Farah from the game. (In 'The Two Thrones', when Farah meets the Prince, she didn't recognize him.) If I'm not wrong, there are many changes in the movie and it doesn't actually follow the game plot. However, the movie is absolutely fantastic. The costumes, backgrounds and acting were almost perfect. It has a good action sequences and visual effects. I don't know whether sequel to this movie will be made or not, but I'll always be waiting for that.
Sano Sansar (2008)
Simple plot but a good one.
Sano Sansar is a slow paced movie with lots of dialogs and emotions. The movie should not be expected to have action sequences or visual effects. It's a story about two person who don't like each other but anonymously, they are good chat friends. Alok Nembang has done a praiseworthy job. Karma and Namrata also got their good debut performance (but maybe not to their best). The songs of the movie are better. End can be predicted but watching the whole movie is fun.
It feels like something is missing in the movie and also the movie feels like an inspired version of "You've Got Mail". No matter what, this movie is a revolution in the Nepalese film industry. The movie is one of the best. Lets encourage the production of better movies.
A lot of unexpected twists
By the title, I expected the movie to be some racing movie type having fast cars or the plot related to the horse racing but it's different. It's about the life Race. You never know what just happened and what's coming. It would seem too foolish if one started predicting the end. It's too exciting. I never thought this movie would have so much twists and turns.
The direction is just fine, not perfect but the plot is brilliant. Katrina and Bipasha acted well while Saif Ali Khan, Akshaya Khanna and Anil Kapoor make the movie fantastic. Several flaws can be easily detected but still, the movie runs too good that those flaws would be negligible. Background music and the songs are okay.
One need not use his head much because everything has been explained. The movie is much for watch and enjoy. It's a full entertainment package.
Watch and learn...
Because 'Kagbeni' is the first digital movie of Nepal, it has its own place in the history of Nepali Film Industry. Bhusan Dahal has made this movie worth watching. The performances of the actors are the best ever. The storyline follows the story of "The Monkey's Paw" which possesses a great power, the power which can fulfill every wish you make, but the rightful owner of the paw should make a wish. Wishes of any other get fulfilled along with a disaster. Watch the movie, and you see who wishes what, and what disaster they bring along.
The message passed through the movie is great. The movie may not be the taste of average Nepalese, but had the same movie been produced by Hollywood, I'm sure it would have good position in the World Film Industry.
