Come to Daddy (2019)
5/10
More of the same.
9 February 2020
I have no idea why Hollywood keeps making such movies, but obviously there is a market for them, most likely a growing one, thus I expect to see more and more of this genre.

On the other hand how did Elijah got here is beyond me, I'm guessing it might have something to do with productions like Maniac and Cooties, also I've noticed he produced others such as Mandy, The colour of space, so all in all, perhaps it's a choice and not a downhill slip for him.

Come to Daddy is clearly not my coup of tea, I do get the appeal it has, the dark humor managed to make me smile a few times, but jumping from one extremity to another didn't quite did it for me. I do like some consistency, sure, after a first slower half I did not mind one bit seeing some action but it came in a rather disturbing hilarious way, where I didn't quite know how to take it all in. You see, I am a big fan of productions such as The Visit, where you also see a nice blend of comedy with some disturbing elements, but that one stayed away from torture porn or gore, and it managed to have quite a nice impact on me.

All in all definitely not a bad movie, as I mentioned already, I'm sure it will be a blast for many, but not for me. I recommend it only if you're a fan of the genre.

Cheers!

Harpoon (2019)
6/10
Tad bit better than Good.
6 February 2020
Harpoon is indeed a movie that manages to deliver but perhaps a factor that influenced the outgoing was its ability to lower your expectations from the very beginning, thus coming on top later on.

As a dark comedy it works just fine, a perfect example of what a small budget can do in the right hands, but I just have to add that it came quite close to a greater production, if it would have not stumbled in its own plot holes. Nevertheless a movie I gladly recommend, it does keep your interest alive and manages to say farewell leaving behind a sentiment of closure and satisfaction.

If the budget is your problem, look closely at such films, if you think good acting can't be achieved cheaper, again, put your eye here and if location is your problem, well the open waters or the typical woods are places where good scenarios can come to life.

PS: if you liked this one, also try The Hole (2001)

Cheers!

Don't know why we needed this one.
11 January 2020
I always appreciate whenever someone has a different idea and is not afraid to show it. So cause of that, I do feel obliged to say that The Black Room is a movie that happened exactly the way the director visioned it.

Now the only problem lies in the fact that the execution, even tho bold, seems a tad bit too over the top in a way that few would manage to appreciate it. Probably from here all the criticism this movie received, because it followed its own rules no matter what, but failing to find a target audience. It seems to be too much erotica and close to no tension. Thus Black Room relies on nudity, gore and over the top performances.

It is definitely not my coup of tea and probably few would appreciate its taste, thus I won't be recommending this one. It is a fair effort, a different kind of black comedy but I found examples like The Black Sheep or One Eyed Monster far better and entertaining.

Cheers!

Trespassers (2018)
4/10
It tried. It failed.
8 January 2020
Trespassers is a movie that wanted to be more I think, one that thought it could expand and grow into something bigger later on, an edge of the seat thriller/horror with some good twists and kills.

Sadly it failed on pretty much every level, being nothing more than a movie that takes forever to start and then delivers some annoying performances and questionable writing really. It is definitely not the worst out there, but if you're into such movies perhaps try something like Revenge (2017) because just like this one it is over the top but manages to provide some better scenes and closure. Even Mandy has more to offer compared to Trespassers, a movie that oddly enough is categorized as horror as well, perhaps the home invasion theme managed to bring this up.

All in all, I don't think people will have fun with this one sadly, so I will not recommend it, not even for a boring late night. Look elsewhere, find something different.

Cheers!

Apparition (V) (2019)
5/10
Weak plot. OK execution. Predictable outcome.
27 December 2019
Now, let me start on a more positive note with this one, it is clearly not a work of art or even a good horror experience, but surely enough not the worst one either. A fair and decent effort, everyone took their roles seriously, did the best they could do, we had a few known actors and that is about it.

The subject, clearly overused without adding a personal touch to it, the acting ok, death shots are missing overall, and the ending itself is one that you have seen most likely 100 times by now. So are there reasons to recommend this? Well, excepting the actors, those that managed to create a career, behind Apparition there are people involved in the making of it and are also trying to make a name for themselves. And for that alone, I will appreciate what they did with the rather small budget, without relying on gore, torture porn or dragging the movie for too long.

All in all, it is a movie that will fly under the radar for sure. Not too much to see really, but certainly not a complete mess.

Cheers!

Widow's Walk (2019)
3/10
Most anti-climactic movie ever.
16 December 2019
Sorry to say so, but there is close to 0% horror, perhaps, 0.5% tops and most important, absolutely no climax. Sure there will be a closure, which will happen only to shock the viewer a little, but overall this movie was a swing and a miss.

It takes a small forever to happen, to develop, to make the scrip move further and provide something interesting, I waited and waited hoping that perhaps I will get a glimpse of a turning point, a deciding moment, one that will turn everything around, but excepting the absolute last 2 minutes, there will be no such thing. It will take a great load of patience and possibly some alcohol involved in order to fully view Widow's Walk without losing interest, because it has so little to offer.

I didn't get the point of the movie, surely I did understand it, for sure, but I do believe we all could have lived without it. It is a rather dull production, maybe, just maybe hanging on the neo-noir atmosphere that is long gone, because some traits of it, like the soundtrack and different scenes, did seem to have its roots there, but still, nonetheless, this movie isn't for everyone. I surely will not recommend it, for it brought nothing to the table.

Cheers!

Pretty solid for what it is.
14 December 2019
After She Wakes is a decent horror/thriller, one that should be looked up by fans of the genres, because it does manage to deliver an ok story with some good acting as well. It surely does become predictable at some point, especially for those who have had their share of such productions, but still, keeps you interested long enough to get you to the finish line.

The execution is ok, the effects stand tall, even tho they are quite minimal, character development is present and a pretty interesting plot developing here. It doesn't stretch for too long, keeps it at 1 hour and 15 minutes, and I always appreciate this, because a lot of movies tend to expand in order to fill up maybe 90, or 105 minutes, but After She Wakes showed exactly what it had in mind and stopped right there. A great example of less is more.

I do recommend it for horror fans out there, I can't say for sure that those enjoying a good thriller will get a blast from this one, but as a indie horror, it works quite ok.

Cheers!

I See You (II) (2019)
8/10
One of the year's best!
7 December 2019
Now hear me out and hear me good: this one is a blast! It has everything from a wonderful and confusing first situation, to an excellent development, complex characters, great writing and directing and a superb last act.

If you hear about a future or present hype about it, trust me, it's true. Everything falls great in place, keeps you guessing, makes you believe you finally cracked the code but most likely in the end you'll find yourself pleasantly surprised.

Thus, I See You is a great example of cinema done right, close to no loop holes, just a wonderful puzzle revealing itself in front of your eyes, while you might be scratching your head about it. Highly recommended, kept me guessing at the edge of my seat.

Cheers!

Starts good enough, loses its touch.
7 December 2019
So this one starts fairly decent, weak special effects but that is the only down side at first. As the movie further develops we get more laughs, over the top kills and gore.

After about 70% of the movie length, sadly it turns into the usual Asian drama you get to see in pretty much every such production. A long awaited finish will eventually come but will not deliver any closure just more and more unnecessary drama.

Overall I would recommend it but bare in mind that it becomes genuinely hard to enjoy at some point. It was close to a sure hit, but dragged itself for too long sadly.

Cheers!

Dark Light (2019)
6/10
Yeees, Quite, Quite.
6 December 2019
Ok, this little movie here started absolutely great, amazing execution for such a production, lovely tension build up, and managed to keep up this fast pace for quite a while. But the last part, it is quite disappointing actually, perhaps there was less room for imagination and they had to settle for an ending that did not deliver, created huge plot holes and had the viewer genuinely asking, What is happening and why?

Dark Light managed to create a tiny world for itself, with its own rules, but most of it went down the drain once the third act came in place, and I can't stop wondering how things derailed so much. I am still going to recommend it for it is an effort far better than most, even tho it feels like a let down in the very end, it does deserve more attention and perhaps some praise as well.

In the future, I hope the people involved in the making of Dark Light, take some extra time in order to offer their next projects a more constant tone, till the credits show up.

Cheers!

Amazing work.
30 November 2019
First of all the acting, the one coming from the kid was amazing. Apart from that, the premise was great, the execution a blast, everything fell in place forming an awesome ride.

One of the year's best, a movie that I think surpassed Chronicle, and it should have received a lot more press and attention. Definitely a great effort, execution and delivery, thus I will definitely recommend it.

The Furies (2019)
7/10
Excellent!
30 November 2019
After this year's Haunt and Trick, we were brought, The Furies, a great add-on to the slasher genre, with its own rules and premise, different yet far more entertaining than your usual.

It was a beautiful movie, lovely executed, unexpected deep and chilling soundtrack, overall a slasher done right, one that kept these productions heading the right way, to uncharted territory, so I can't wait to see what's next.

I will recommend it to anyone up for a different view, it has its share of great deaths, interesting killers and unexpected turns throughout its run time.

Cheers!

Pulling you into it more and more.
24 November 2019
So definitely and by far this is not a perfect movie, yet it was a thrilling ride, with many unexpected turns and a satisfying ending.

European cinema is growing more and more, after showing some great horror examples, lately the thriller part is starting to develop nicely, thus I am sure we're going to be top notch in a few... well decades I perhaps. So ok, Asian cinema is great on its own, Europe just needs to develop its own traditions, ways.

Examples like Cut Off and The Guily clearly show the potential, thus I feel obliged to recommend this one. Sure, it may seem a tad bit too long at times but overall I think it was an captivating ride. It sort of reminds me of The Call or Kidnap, great style and substance, in smaller such productions.

Cheers!

I can take a joke but not this one.
18 November 2019
I do see two other reviews here, both of which managed to praise this production, so here I am, ready to ruin everything.

I am not a big fan of gore, and this one has plenty of it, I do appreciate a good low sci fi horror, yet I feel it is not the case here, and had a serious problem with the acting and writing. True, it did seem that The Mildew was not supposed to be taken seriously, and pays homage to other such movies, but I do think they could have managed a whole lot more if they went the proper wdirection. It is more like Machete but focusing mainly on gore and overreacting without actually having anything to offer.

For me it is a definite No, but strangely enough I do see how others might find it appealing. Just be warned, it is 80% green liquid, 10% screams and 10% close ups of annoying laughter.

Cheers!

Promising. Okey. Boring. Dreadful.
5 November 2019
Ghost in the Graveyard starts with a rather known routine for us horror fans, one that somewhat succeeds at first but slowly fades into the usual, forgotten end.

I wished I liked this more, because it began with a promising idea and execution, perhaps slightly rushed, yet everything seemed in place to see the plot executed from a point of view that just maybe differed from the average ones. But in the end it all came crumbling down, and the idea presented here, came out as absurd instead of lightening, the script split in more than one direction, it lost its main audience, and tried to tie all lose ends in one big finale that failed, annoyed and bored me. Indeed the movie's run time is only 1.30h, still managed to seem a lot longer because of all the front and backs it suffered in order to show those different offshoots that needed to come together, so Ghost in a Graveyard is pretty much a swing and a miss, with a long flight time in between.

Nothing here to recommend sadly, most likely others will feel differently after the first 15 minutes, that perhaps this review is too harsh, yet in the end I feel that people will agree with me.

Cheers!

Rattlesnake (2019)
4/10
Just boring.
27 October 2019
Predictable. Slow. Boring.

The only good thing I have to say about Rattlesnake is that it managed to occupy its entire run time, one of 1h 25minutes, including the intro and the credits, but other than that, seriously, you could anticipate everything that was going to happen here from min 25 mostly.

I wish I could recommend this, but it is slow, boring and genuinely doesn't show anything, close to literally no action, everything is put there from the very beginning and it is quite clear where it's heading. I guess you could give it a go but try and expect nothing from it. Cause it will certainly fail to deliver.

Cheers!

Solid work but not perfect.
27 October 2019
I should probably start this one on a positive note, thus, lovely little such examples as The Dead Center should get the proper praise for what they managed to do with a tiny budget. On the other hand I have seen even better such productions, Session 9 for me, so I won't be able to go all the way up with it.

Ok, so all in all, the acting here belongs in a far better movie no doubt about it, it is a result that simply has to be acknowledged, so bravo for those who picked the actors, also the dialogue they were given to work with. It all seemed quite on point, nothing too dramatic, mostly simple, effective, natural lines. The plot, even tho not original, cause let's face it, what is nowadays, was very well executed, and managed to keep me interested all the way. Amazing really what they did with a little budget, and a small idea, and yet, we got a terrific horror, that works in the psychological genre as well.

Kudos to you people, involved in the making of The Dead Center. Looking forward into seeing more of your work.

Cheers!

Pumpkins (2018)
2/10
The Gingerdead Man made more sense.
20 October 2019
Pumpkins is something that sincerely needs to be avoided at all cost, because it really does look incredibly bad. From camera work, to plot, actors, dialogue, there is simply put, not one good thing about it. It did nothing to redeem itself and also has one of the weirdest endings I've seen so far, cutting out of a scene during the climax and that was all.

I tried to enjoyed it, but after no more than 10 minutes you realize that there is nothing to see here, a movie that perhaps would have worked far better if it tried the dark comedy approach, yet sadly, it takes itself quite seriously.

If any of you really want to watch this, well, you're a braver person than I am, cause I only did it out of the lack of information about it. You've all been warned.

Cheer!

Had potential, so what?
19 October 2019
Is this the first time I notice the potential a movie wastes? So many horrors manage to develop a better scrip than you'd expect for a low budget production yet completely fail to deliver. Why? In my opinion so far is because sometimes, like here, the subject is overused, and has little room to wiggle. In all sincerity what more could they have covered, what is there uncharted?

I did like the premise sure, but ever since I've seen Grave Encounters, a movie that managed to shock a little through its very end, which I found to be the cherry on top, movies like this, found footage or not, are quite bound to respect the very same rules the ones before them did. Sure, I wanted it to be good, and to have fun with it, perhaps even to experience a few scares, but excepting the self satire, it brought nothing new.

It is definitely not a bad movie, but most likely you have seen it before under other names, so if you just have to check this one out as well, do it at your own risk and time. You have been warned.

Cheers!

Slow. Boring. Nonsense for that matter.
19 October 2019
It was a rather unpleasant experience, staying awake for the entire run time of The Village in the Woods, as it provided no scares, tension, just a lot of awkward moments between the characters. Scenes beyond cringy any time there was any interaction on screen, a finale revealing itself midway through, and genuinely no normal reactions from pretty much anyone involved in the plot.

I do believe both the script and the direction were complete misfires, coming off only as, somewhat eerie but relying too much on unnatural moments, decisions and irrational thinking.

I don't find it easy to recommend it, even for the die hard fans of in the woods horrors, I for one felt disappointed and somewhat tricked, into waiting and thinking that maybe there will be more than what was clearly coming, but no such thing happened here.

Cheers!

Trick (II) (2019)
7/10
One of the best modern slashers.
18 October 2019
Wow, was this movie fast pacing or what! It simply started strong and kept going till the very end. Highly entertaining, no dull moments, keeps you guessing, it pretty much delivers on all levels. The kills were nice, but never relied on gore, blood was shown, only because the weapon of choice is a knife, and had a really fresh attitude towards the genre.

Trick is one of the best I've seen in quite a while, thus I will highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Halloween/slashers/horror movies, it is a thrilling ride and at times it seems quite unnatural at how fast it goes. Had a total blast with this one, so glad I run into it.

Once again now, Trick is a great, fun movie, that provides a breath of fresh air into the lungs of slashers!

Cheers!

Could have been AMAZING.
18 October 2019
Close! So close, but no cigar here folks. Two first acts that went down smooth and lovely and then that final one which simply put, ruined everything. Perhaps it is a rarer outcome sure, unlikely to predict, but just seemed way out of place.

Eli is a movie that came with a close to perfect horror script, seriously great acting, good atmosphere, but however you look at it, in the end most likely you'll feel disappointed. No cherry on the top, no fat lady singing, just a premise and an execution to match it, till the very end.

Sure, I will recommend this one, because it delivers far more and better than most such productions out there, don't try to guess the final act, no point into it really, just enjoy it for as long as you can. I hope it will seem more natural to you than it did to me.

Cheers!

Altered Skin (2018)
3/10
Horror movie without any horror.
18 October 2019
I know, from the poster, the plot, you definitely would expect a zombie movie right? Is it a bad thing if one of these such productions would focus less on gore and more on something else, like Altered Skin did?

Sadly, the case here managed to show a movie that mostly felt like someone was just followed around with a camera, without any idea what the next step is, just rolling with what they got: a conspiracy movie, and barely anything else. Zombies will appear on screen little over 5 minutes total, the rest relies solely on a quest to find out the truth, even tho it is revealed from the very start of the movie.

It has no tension, it doesn't build into anything, it feels so empty, I couldn't believe my eyes. Close to no action whatsoever. I can not possibly recommend this, as it is one of the most boring movies I've seen all year.

Cheers!

Sweetheart (I) (2019)
7/10
Good movie.
16 October 2019
So let's think about the budget this movie had, about the actors, the surroundings, the plot, and if we add all of them, it comes off as a beautiful effort. It doesn't have to take too much in order to make a nice little gem for yourself, and as shown here, with a right direction, you can achieve lots of things.

Sweetheart was interesting from start to finish, did not focus on more details than it should, it comes off as those lovely first 15 minutes from I Am Legend, but manages to continue like such, without divulging too much and simply staying on the story. You get to see more and more, to stick some pieces together yet always pay attention on what's important, and this I do believe it is the beauty of a simpler movie: less is more.

Sweetheart is an great example of how horror/survival/in the woods/ monster movie should present itself, not just copy this one, but come forward with the material after it was properly put together and gone through every little step. I salute Sweetheart and also recommend to you Prey (2019), tad bit alike, both decent add-ons to horror.

Cheers!

Utter borefest.
15 October 2019
Wow, was this movie annoying or what. It genuinely felt that every single step the script takes is in order to annoy the viewer even more. Now don't get me wrong, I'm a huge horror fan, and whenever I review one I take in consideration the year, the budget, the subject and so on, thus do believe me when I tell you Gothic Harvest is nothing more than a skip, skip, skip!

Nothing intriguing about it, nothing new, absolutely all the clichées one would expect from such a production, you will find here. It truly was hard to watch it, all the way through, but with a lot of patience and some alcohol, I did manage to do just that. Did I find it somewhat entertaining? Definitely not, not enough alcohol and not enough boredom for that to happen.

Sadly to say, this is an absolute pass of a horror movie. It is weak from start to finish. You have been warned!

Cheers!
