You Can't Take It with You (1938)
Inspirenig and yet alarming
This is indeed one of the best movies I have ever seen. It is a great illustration of what we have lost in the world, the very life itself! I look around and see only too group of people: those who are eagerly do everything they can to gain more money and those who work for them. What a miserable way of living.
Frank Capra undeniably is a genius. This movie like his other works simply yet deeply and effectively delivers the message to all of us: Do not do that! Do not live like that and have some courage to actually live. Not as a money maker machine and not just as an alive employee. But as a human who make things and can enjoy life.
I Am Mother (2019)
Brilliant and intelligent
Without speaking directly about the plot which has been explained by other reviewers, I'd like to talk about a highly possible allegorical story behind the plot. The movie could be very well about the law and the society structure.
There are many hints to support that idea in the movie. I think the movie is explaining the way people and societies have been trying to make better ways of living generation after generation and yet based on basic philosophies from the past. Another sociological element is the struggle between human's rational mind which tries to make required rules for maintaining a healthy society and instincts that bond him to his nature of being completely free (the dog) along with his irrational but hopeful habits from the very old times (religion). Also the movie is showing the harsh way that rules treat with the outlaws (the ones who doesn't match) and the difficulties to avoid the mismatch because of human's unpredictable nature. And then finally the future generation which is still unknown if it could be successful or not even after these all hard works (the new mother is still a human and despite her being ready and accepted by the robot, she could still fail).
I think even if audience don't catch this sides in the first look they can still feel it. You will sense something familiar, bothering, and somehow hopeful. This movie is not a perfect one without any flaws of course so I can't call it a masterpiece or give it titles like that, but it is still very brilliant and worthy. Just go watch it and enjoy an original wonderful work.
This movie is horribly bad. It is only 2 hours of people kicking and shooting each other. That's it, nothing more. And even about that, there is no logic. They save the main character countless times with no logic when he could be killed easily. Some people killed 2 or 3 men in a public place and people haven't even looked. No solid story, no logic. A very big wealthy organization who run a huge international gangster group couldn't hire someone with a sniper to kill one man. A man is hit by car twice and then he gets up and kill them all. And that fake death at the end was funniest of it all. Well maybe people only enjoy action but even that should be acceptable by introduced logic of the movie.
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018)
A powerfull work and very underrated
This movie is astonishing. A complex yet short and understandable narrative of the roots of society and western civilization. Extremely summarized yet magnificently enough, the movie explains the routes that society has passed, life style changes and associated mistakes, "struggles between modernism, intellectual roots and traditions", the role of capitalism, man-nature relationship, all the sacrifices (some necessary and some pointless) and all the hard works.
Kudos to Coen Brothers and all the cast. I am wondering how this brilliant movie haven't got enough attention so far! It is certainly an underrated work that deserve much better.
I definitely recommend it to everyone to watch this "a must see, mind blowing" film.
Outstanding performance and brilliant directing
The movie is beyond excellent in the matter of directing and production aspects. The story is very well been presented where one can say it is not possible to do it better. The acting is superb as well especially Charlize Theron's magnificent performance.
The story itself at the other hand is not as good as those perfect qualities. It could be paced better in the scenario I think. Turning worse from bad is something expected but showing the exact break points and the effects of the pas right in the present is not an easy job. I think scenario could have been written better in which the audience could see the chain of effects from the past while the current events happening, the true motives and how they work. The movie tells the story of a broken young girl turning bad and worse from an abused child to a prostitute and then a killer. That is well explained but while we see a movie about that process the most interesting part would be a detailed explanation of how that happens. I felt like the "how" part lacks something after I have watched it.
However, beside that lack of detailed scenario, the movie absolutely worth watching and is no doubt interesting. You will enjoy it for sure even if you are not a big fan of crime movies.
A Monster Calls (2016)
A must see
Facing a close relative's death is no doubt one of the most difficult challenges in everyone's life. It gets even more difficult while that someone is your mother and it gets exponentially worse while you are a child.
About A Monster Calls, making it simple and short, this movie explains that difficult situation in which you see it from the perspective of the child. That is hilarious. at some points I remembered the Fountain especially through the story of the healing powers of the tree and its connection with the real story.
One may think the real trauma must be more horrifying and it is somehow true but the process of fighting with the reality and walking across the sharp edge of hope, believe and letting go has been brilliantly pictured in this movie.
so not even A Monster Calls worth watching but also it is a must see.
Lights Out (2016)
A regular horror
If you like regular horror movies with sudden jumps., it is a good choice for you to get entertained. It also tries to introduce a new form of relation between spiritual entities and humans. However not very well explained and just like many other regular horror movies is full of flows.
A good representation of an actual accident
It is a good explanation of the unfortunate and sad accident in Chernobyl. I am not sure how much of it is exact but if it is completely based on facts it is very informative. However I really don't get this much hype for it. Am I missing something? Maybe I am but more than what I have said I can't find anything else in which it deserves this much compliment. A 9.7/10 seems certainty an overrated score to me.
Do I recommend it? Yes. It is informative and has been well made. But there are many other shows and movies providing this quality and higher. So it is only a higher than average one no more.
One of those "going nowhere" Movies
If we can categorize movies in two main classes: 1- ones that straightly stick to a subject and follow a solid story line and 2- those that use metaphors and symbolic expression of some phenomenon to deliver a message in a deeper way.
Most Horror movies belong to the first category. Although there are some horror movies in the second group, except a handful of them like "Babadook" and "Oculus" they are disable to successfully perform the idea beyond the horror shell. I am not sure about this one in the matter of categorizing but I am sure that whichever it is it is a failure. You may consider some hidden layers especially in the first half but immediately you regret of thinking that way, so you have no choice to see it only as a horror tail having some sci-fi theme. And then again you see too many flows and nonsense plots that lead to nothing, not even the horror is scary enough. The only good the performances.
So it is a complete waste of time and I think you may not enjoy it.
Game of Thrones: The Iron Throne (2019)
From Doom of Roman Empire to conquest of paradise
I have been thinking why game of thrones ending felt so bad by many. Yes the writing and storytelling was terrible in the last season and somehow season 7. However I think there is one more reason to this. Let's remind ourselves that the whole story is based on the Britain's story as Westeros while too many other aspects like fantasy has been added. The old Valyria is in fact the Roman Empire and Targaryen's invasion is the conquest of Britain by the Romans. If you read about that events you even can spot the footprints of the great wall. Martin has been loyal to history in much of the work but by some fantasy and add-ons which are totally acceptable. However his main point I think is explaining the wining of the modern politics which started by flourishing of Great Britain against the old ancient powers like old empires after the doom of Roman Empire. We see the old nation's glory comes from magical elements and traditional power systems. Martin introduces the Valyria as the only great flourishing civilization in the east but he mentions the roots as well. Like the home of dragons "Asshai" that could very well be the older and farther to the east powerful civilizations like Persian Empire or Egyptian Civilizations (even farthest to China). So far So good!
But explaining the invasion of Britain and all the civilization elements Romans brought to Britain like governing and politics growth and linking them to Targaryen's madness looks like a bit of historical revenge. It is true that some of Roman Empires were cruel and had incest (which was regular among many other ancient Empires), but madness as bloodline and heritage is another thing. That look is kind of racist and somehow religious. That is the problem here that has ruined the story as well. Especially the General who first conquered the Britain has not been mentioned among that notorious Roman Emperors in history. In the other hand, adding-up another fantasy element like White walkers and a remaining Targaryen who is strongly linked with the madness no doubt will produce a mess if you insist on being loyal to the realistic and historical roots of the story. I was not certain about that until that final moment of Arya. That was the explanation of the victory of Britain Modern politics against all that remained of ancient powers and the start of conquering the world including the paradise itself (America). So the bad part is the madness and racist look up into the Romans which is not true even about the cruel ones. But why it destroyed the story of the Game of thrones? Because Martin hides the Madness in Daenerys Targaryen behind that coin of gods for the sake of the element of surprise and attracting the audience. That is the base of a glitch in the story where after a long time of introducing a lovely character who is trying to make the world better you find no other way to defeat her in the way that makes her defeat a good thing. And that is only possible by flipping the coin of insanity. In fact in best case this would be a bad referring to the history if not justifying some unpleasant parts of it. I adore Martin's love for Britain as the foundation of new western politics and civilization as well as the fantasy world that he has built on that love but that madness and heritage racist part is a bad one. Now, in the show, handling this whole mixed system of fantasy and history is obviously beyond the abilities of D&D. They simply can't handle it. I assume Martin have told them some major plot lines like Daenerys Goes mad and burns the city, or Jon kills him. That is not even close to enough to develop such a huge story. And this disability of the writers exactly amplified the glitches in the original story and make that sense of depression and offend. The audience no doubt experience the feel of being offended because they sympathies themselves with a character who has been accused to madness with no proper development and being hided. And people also feel injustice because the winners has been introduced based of the historical elements (aim of the story) nor the fantasy world (the development). So, maybe if Martin writes the books, he could very well prepare the audience for the flipping part and hides the glitch masterfully but that did not happen in the show.
Cold Pursuit (2019)
Tries hard but no success
The movie has a good story and one can see it tries hard to deliver it in the way viewers accept the atmosphere and sequences. But somehow unable in delivering the feel. The viewers can't feel the atmosphere that is required for the chain of events happen. For example nowhere in the movie main actors background can be found to show if he is capable of doing what he does or not. And that argument can be well true for the opposite side. It is very brief in explaining that aspects. I think that's why somehow you may be confused if things are serious or not. It remains somewhere between being a real world simple gangster movie and a non-realistic world like sin city.
However it is not a terrible movie and I think it holds the middle ground.
Game of Thrones (2011)
A very well structered one until the halfway
I have been watching this since the very beginning of it. It has started amazingly and was very well paced and produced. A whole big amazing Real but Fantasy world with interesting characters all have different story lines and still connected masterfully.
I have to admit that I was amazed and found myself unable to stop watching it. I wen through and were looking for any material related to it so I found the books. A song of ice and fire. what a great universe. what a magnificent writing and what a brutal yet interesting story telling. I found myself dedicated to the story and faster than any book before, I have done reading them. then again and again I re-watched the show and tried to dig down the theories, prophecies, build ups and characters arcs. What a great journey! I have to admit that it was great. Reading about the blue rose in the wall and finding the true meaning beyond the ice and fire was especially a magnificent experience. Thanks a lot both for the creator of the show and The author George Raymond Richard Martin.
That was the first part, until The books stopped because for any reason the author didn't finished them and the end of season 4 on the TV and some parts of the rest until the end of season 6. beyond that, the show has started to fall down and got worse and worse through time. no complex story line links, no character development, no mind-blowing twists, no deep dialogues and finally it converted to a whole new thing. something that was not like what I have loved once. It became a disaster in season 8 in fact. what an unfortunate, what a waste.
I gave the show 10/10 stars and despite some bad writings and bad episodes haven't had a second thought about changing it ever before until now. It is with great sorrow only now where I am going to change my vote for the whole TV Show and give it a fair one considering season 7 and season 8. and considering that, it is definitely way lower than a 10/10. this is a beater end for me and Game of thrones. I wont watch it again because it is both ridiculous and painful (for example anytime someone says "winter is coming") and I wont be reading the books neither because Ive been informed that Author has been saying :the shows path is not much difference from the books". Also I wont be watching anything relating to this universe ever unless I hear otherwise about the way the books will handle the story.
So If you haven't watched this show yet, be careful to not get involved very deep and not be deceived by the greatness of first 4 chapters or you will be disappointed in the most horrible way possible.
Game of Thrones: The Bells (2019)
The story IS the most imortant thing
Well there are already too many criticism about the sudden and unacceptable changes in the lines of the story. They are mostly true in overall. But when reviewing an episode it is essential to consider the episode itself both in the matter of its place in the whole picture and the structure of its inner build.
It is obvious by now for everyone that the story has lost its way before this episode and the characters as well are lost the characteristics and so their purpose. I am not talking about that because I think if anyone can't see that, it is either self-deceiving or carelessness about the story telling, character development and the quality in overall. I am not saying is a bad thing however. One can simply watch a TV show only for being shocked or watching great CGI or even nude scenes. All that are OK I think as a personal reason for watching a show. But I think that reasons are not for all people as there are many other shows presenting those aspects but never became as welcomed for many people as GOT. I believe "well-structured different story lines and logical links between them" is the one critical attribute that made this particular show glorious and popular in such magnitude we all know.
So, regardless of the whole story line and about the story telling in the episode itself: There are too many unbelievably illogical plots based on the logic of the very season 8 and not before. First: Scorpions are capable or not? How all that ships that are equipped with scorpions all missed one big dragon? The same question is there for all those on the city walls. It is Impossible that all the shots miss based on how those weapons have been introduced before.
How a wounded man probably twice in the kidneys with open wounds can survive all the climb from the shore to the red kip? Seriously this is impossible. Daenerys going mad after those surrender alarms? Is there something genetically wrong with her? But how we can't see that until that very moment? I can accept a genetic disorder but not a sudden one. Again I skip the character build ups from previous seasons but in this very season and even this episode, a viewer can't see any sign of a genetic disorder until she starts burning the city. Uh? How the knights of the north became rapists and mad? Seriously? I mean is this genetic disorder a viral thing too? Dotrakies? How many of them survived the previous episodes however? It looks not many of those lights have really been shut down in the episode 3. But they have haven't they? I could continue, but to list the flows in story telling is not the aim of my argument. I am just pointing that WHY the episode itself lacks quality in that matter regardless of being a whole diversion from the previous seasons like all other episodes of season 8. So as I think the story is the most important part of a show or a movie, This one is a terrible one and not even can't be clustered in the same category as the episodes of the earliest seasons it is not even an average episode from an average TV show. One point for CGI, one for Acting:2/10
these would be the best meaningful ending for some of main characters
Dany and her remaining Army along with her dragon go back to meeren and live a life with dario immediately So she represents George R. R. Martin who abandoned us the midway. Jon Snow becomes a mad man wondering around in north of the wall killing tales of snow so he will represent our never ending struggle with the white walkers story line. Tyrion betrays the north but Bron kills him anyways so he represents our sadly lost hope for the show. Jaime steals that knights book writes some false heroic things about himself on it and changes his name to Don Quixote so he represents writers intelligent an achievements. Cersei attacks north and kills them all Smirking so she represents the fanboys who blindly cheers for the show after what it becomes since season 7. and then Euron Greyjoy kills her and wins the Iron Throne so he represent the lowered sad ratings of the last season of the show. Arya lives a lone life as an honorable Strong woman so she represent the magnificent CGI in the show.
Sad to say so but Game of Thrones is level downed horribly. I feel really sad.
Game of Thrones: The Long Night (2019)
oh for F sake! this was so embaressing
I have watched the episode 4 times by now. and every time I do, it gets worse.
The previous reviews have mentioned all the problems with this episode. I just list them again in the order of importance in my mind:
1- The white walkers war has been introduced to us as the main story line in the show in which non other story can get even close too it. we can clearly catch it by the "ice and fire" thing, first episode, Melisandre visions(this war of the 5 kings means nothing) Brans's visions, prophecies, Dayneris visions, Jon's alarms, children of the forest and so many other build ups. So this whole important and mystery needs enough and proper respond and answers. certainly eliminating all that by only a battle and a simple dagger hit is both stupid and unfair.
2- The battle itself was not only unacceptable and childish but also an insult to all who have been following the story for all these years. as has been mentioned before in reviews: unexplained events like Arya's final scene(where did Arya jump from? it is a big black hole here! ), battle strategies, Dohtrakies suicide and blind attack, wasting of good worriers for no reason, surviving of the main characters from situations of certain death by cutting the film and then resuming it later with a different situation(plot armors), are all the example of dumb story telling.
3- what about other interesting and strong build ups like the prince who was promised and Azor-Ahi? Ice and fire? ok, they can just ignore them, it is ok to do that but it is waste of opportunities and ignoring all the development for them.
4- Bran! what is the point of having him on that chair anyway? only as a bait? that's it? all that three eyed raven thing has only been useful to reveal Jon's parentage and being a bait. that's it.
5- what is the significant of the continuing the show whatever that would be after ruining the main line and the most important and also most interesting part of the story? who cares if cersie manages to stay there smirking for good or she will be killed? how important is the throne war after this embarrassing end of the great war?
And last but not least: It is Game of thrones for F sake! it doesn't deserve this embarrassment.
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
An average movie, worth watching but not more
Story and the plot are the foundation of any movie and this film isn'tr very well in that matter. of course much superhero movies are like that however.
It is obvious that we can expect things that are not rational compare to real world in sci-fi or fantasy movies so we measure them in compare to their own introduced logic. we accept some basic unnatural things and then we follow the new rules. Based on the rules the marvel universe has introduced us previously, End Game has too many holes. characters suddenly get very stronger than what they were seconds before or in compare to their history with no reason. Time traveling bugs like in all other time traveling movies present here as well. this happens also to emotional relationships between them. movie has too many cliche scenes with boring dialogs.
when we compare this one to Infinity war, it is a huge disappointment. However, it is still worth watching and if you are a fan of Sci-fi, it entertains you. It is just an average superhero movie.
Just a lame extention of the first episode!
It is hard for me to make any negative comments about Game of thrones but sometimes things you love may go wrong way too much. The whole episode looks like an ordinary low budget show that is made by some beginners who lack any talent or skills in writing and directing. plots are unbelievably messed up with hurry jumps between pieces of the story while there are also many unnecessary scenes.
most of this episode could be two three scenes in the first one which I was OK with the way they made it. but it was not necessary nor rational to make another one just like it. it seems they just wanted to waste these episode or extend the show only a bit longer until they show the real thing. this is not Game of thrones however.
This is certainly the worst game of thrones episode so far.
Game of Thrones: Winterfell (2019)
Needle is Jon Snow's smile
This was a very well organized premiere episode. skipped the unnecessary details, covered all raw material for the next episodes and had good sequence.
Maybe it could be better in emotional scenes specially aria and Jon reunion. maybe they could show us the important role needle played while aria changed in bravos and then changed back again. but it was not bad at all. they focused on introducing changes in characters to each other fast and skipped the details which makes sense considering the situation. The Grayjoys escaped the boring plots and now have enough screen time, not more. putting Jaimi at the end and Visual effects were pretty good too.
So overall, it is a very well premiere episode.
Captain Marvel (2019)
Just an average marvel movie, maybe a little lower than average
Although Captain Marvel is a typical lower than mid range superhero movie (which are full of cliches and plot holes), yet it is not a terrible one. If you are Ok with typical superhero movies and usual optimistic plot and happy ending in those kind of films then you can enjoy this one too.
However, considering marvel's last significant improvement; Avengers : Infinity War; Captain Marvel is a huge let down. So be warned! if you expect something like Infinity War, Great disappointment is ahead.
A remarkably brilliant movie
I think it is beyond a horror movie but even if we only see it as a horror fantasy supernatural movie it is as good as a movie can be in that genre.
However for people who are interested in psychology, its attraction gets amplified. The movie could very well be a representation of dark and horrible atmosphere that cheating can cause and effects on the member of a family especially the children.
Just put everything aside and go watch this movie. The acting is brilliant, directing, filming and the story telling are amazing as well.
The Predator (2018)
This is truly a very dumb movie in every aspects!
Not funny at all, there is no solid story, and nothing makes sense, even acting is dumb. It is a complete waste of time, wont even entertains you a bit.
I have to admit that you may laugh at some points but not because it is funny but because you may react with a sadden laugh realizing how stupid this film really is.
The Babadook (2014)
A unique horror movie
Digging down to the depth of sadness and fear, this very symbolic film presents the harsh environment of loneliness and helplessness. I haven't watched a good movie for a while even though I watch at least for o five movies a week. the
Acting is brilliant, plot and the scenario are as well excellent.
give it a shot, you wont regret it.
The Idea of dogs have joined with us is good but that's the one and only one good thing here
The story development was really terrible. I mean it is right that somewhere in the history we made kind of coexistence living with dogs and yes that has probably happened while there wasn't such species as dogs so we mad friends with their ancestors, the wolves.
But how? Well we can only guess. However we can also certainly say the way this movie is showing us is the last possible one.
Of course people who consider their apartment puppies like their children can easily digest the idea of prehistoric puppy like wolves but the fact is otherwise. So, stop manipulating people's mind please. First we have locked up these free and capable creatures in apartments after turning them into dolls and now after we think of that as a right for us, we make history the way it endorse our previous lie to ourselves.
Whale Rider (2002)
This is truly a very good movie in every aspects but its most beautiful and important one is the concept of respect. I can't imagine a better way that teaches everyone why and how to respect what they are and what others are.
The music is great, cinematography is amazing and the story is very interesting. However it needs a little patient for one to fully enjoy it. Watch it , it will be an excellent experience.
Perhaps Biology explains the psychology better!
Annihilation is a movie that needs a little more attention if you want to enjoy it completely. I found it very symbolic which includes some inner (maybe hidden to first look) layers of psychology behind its sci-fi outer shell.
Unlike many other metaphoric movies, I think using metaphors was an excellent idea to explain a complex phenomenon like psychological changes of human mind while it faces serious challenges and the overall path of humanity that is heading to final extermination. Using Biology as a tool to explain it is also a very brilliant idea. You can simply pick that up when the psychologist which is also the expedition team's leader clearly gives the hint while she is explaining the difference between suicide and self destruction and then she says perhaps you(the biologist) can explain it better. This Movie is about people's reaction to challenges, the way they look at themselves and when they face their true nature, the way they try to pull themselves out of the big universal failures of the humanity and the effects that remains even if the power of the will is strong enough to pull them out. I will not go further through details in order to avoid spoiling the story. Go watch it for yourself and enjoy it. The cinematography is very good, green views and beautiful imaginative pictures of alien form plants and environment are interesting especially considering the budget of the movie. In the matter of acting, it is simple because the characters has been written that way so maybe you won't be able to say if a person's performance is good or not. Especially for Natalie Portman, I think her talent is way beyond her character so obviously she plays it the best way and obviously it is meaningless to judge her performance based on it.
Finally I can say if you are a person who is interested in complex ideas especially in subjects like psychology, I definitely recommend this movie. If you are only interested in sci-fi aspects and mysterious ideas you will also enjoy it but not as much as movies with big budgets and huge computer works.
