A historical thriller which follows the American mercenary, Frederick Townsend Ward. During the 1860s, Ward's brief but prolific career in the service of the Chinese emperor gave him exceptional influence and status in a society largely closed to foreigners. The book has sold millions of copies and has been likened by critics, to an American version of, 'Lawrence of Arabia,' set in 19th century China.
