Trivia

Craig Mazin had written the opening scene about Dyatlov remembering his son, who developed and died from leukemia at age 10 after Dyatlov himself was exposed to a dose of radiation while working on a nuclear submarine in Siberia. This scene was filmed but ultimately cut from the episode, after it was decided this backstory was not related to the story of Chernobyl. See more »

Quotes

Mikhail Shchadov: The reactor fuel is going to sink into the ground and poison the water from Kiev to the Black Sea, all of it. Forever, they say. They want you to stop that from happening.
Glukhov: How are we supposed to do that?
Mikhail Shchadov: They didn't tell me, because I don't need to know. Do you need to know, or have you heard enough?
Glukhov: [looks at his men, steps up to Shchadov, eyes him over, then pats his shoulder, leaving a big coal dust stain on the minister's nice suit before heading to the truck]

Spectacular performance
24 May 2019 | by PiltilSee all my reviews

The living room or wherever you choose to watch this episode ceases to exist about 25 minutes into this episode. WE become the miners, we want to follow this shift-boss into certain death, just... because..

This is the most brilliant performance I have seen on screen. Alex Ferns interpretation of Glukhov is captivating to say the least. Seldom do one-liners or facial grins alone make the hair on your arm stand. This Glukhov will. Considering the year this happened, this man or any of these men could be your father, brother, your friend. It's amazing the way they portray silent and obedient bravery shown by these miners in 1986. There is something epic about this episode. Something beyond our everyday toils and troubles
