Treacle (2019)

When friends Jessie and Belle go away for the weekend and drunkenly hook up, what seems like an awkward slip up to a firmly heterosexual Jessie is in fact an incredible betrayal to bisexual Belle.

TREACLE is the story of two friends, BELLE, and JESSIE, who go on a weekend away to help Jessie get over a recent breakup. Road tripping through California, we follow them over the course of 24 hours as Belle convinces Jessie to not cancel the trip she'd originally planned to go on with her ex. Lines begin to blur between them when the always heterosexual Jessie in her drunken, post breakup loneliness kisses bisexual Belle. TREACLE aims to give a voice to the 'B' in 'LGBT'. Greetings again from the darkness. Sex is a common form of betrayal in relationships - perhaps the most common. It is, however, a bit unusual as the cause of a break in friendship. When Jessie and her boyfriend break up, she invites her long-time friend Belle to spend the weekend at a fancy rental house Jessie had reserved for her ex-boyfriend's birthday.

It's clear from the banter during the 4 hour drive in Belle's clunky turquoise Mercury that she and Jessie are good friends and share many memories. As with good friends, Belle is there for Jessie in her time of need. Once settled at the "crazy sex house", the two enjoy the sunshine and a few too many stiff drinks.

Ari Anderson stars as Jessie, a full-fledged heterosexual, and April Kelley (also the film's writer) stars as Belle, a happy bisexual. When the alcohol and curiosity take over and the two experience an awkward next morning, Belle feels betrayed ... and justifiably so. Director Rosie Westhoff creates a colorful palette, and Ms. Kelley's script does a superb job of examining an element of LGBTQI that we rarely see. And it all happens in a very taut 17 minutes.
