Disappointing on every level.
15 October 2019 | by doorsscorpywagSee all my reviews

I first read the book age about 11 or 12 and I was mesmerised by it to such an extent I have read it about 20 times in the last 50 years. It is a frightening story of how an alien race attempts to conquer the largest Empire on Earth using futuristic technology.

This BBC adaptation of the book is not remotely Wells famous story. It is some kind of period drama with flame throwers. The first 80 odd minutes deal with the tale of two boring people whose love life is interrupted by bad CGI.

Nobody seems to be really that concerned that England has been invaded by aliens. The acting is terrible as people simply jog slowly away in straight lines to escape a fiery death instead of running panic stricken clawing over each other in blind terror like in the book. The 2 leads Spall and Tomlinson are not remotely convincing as there is no chemistry at all between them. They are not bad actors but act badly in this. The worst though was Robert Carlyle who was underwhelming as Ogilvy and seemed barely interested in making the story the slightest bit tense as he examined what seemed like something alien. The military have some of the worst scenes as the horror of the book is barely recognisable as they recruit the lead male to help with their teleporting artillery.

The effects are pretty poor and the story a confused mess which can't decide whether it is WOTW or Threads and makes no sense as either. They even blatantly steal several aspects from the abysmal Spielberk WOTW the worst adaptation ever made.

Perhaps the next instalment will save this. I do hope so as I have been so looking forward to seeing how the BBC tackled the Greatest Sci-Fi ever written. It pains me to be so critical but I can only comment on what is on the screen and sadly it was really disappointing.
