Janine di Giovanni,
For over six years, and for reasons he can't explain, Matt Green, 37, has been walking every block of every street in New York City - a journey of more than 8,000 miles. THE WORLD BEFORE YOUR FEET tells the story of one man's unusual personal quest and the unexpected journey of discovery, humanity, and wonder that ensues.
One critic wrote "It's hard to see Green in action and not think of traditional pilgrims on holy journeys and, perhaps, hermits or monks or others who have withdrawn from regular life." While this is true, it also brought to mind the ongoing human fascination (obsession) with obsession. A rereading of Moby Dick or Don Quixote would be a better use of one's time. In one of his encounters with curious onlookers, a man asks if Green isn't concerned with being hassled, or attacked, and he responds with glowing positivity that it's never happened. A few have remarked that this is testimony to how safe the streets of NYC have become. The documentary necessarily never points out the obvious - that his "feat" is yet another reminder of, and meditation upon, the many possibilities only available to those fortunate enough to have been blessed with white male privilege at birth. A female or person of color could never have done this safely, let alone seriously contemplated the attempt. And while there are some points of interest, overall this is merely pedestrian ;>)
