As James I succeeds to the English throne Catholics are persecuted and forced to worship in secret. Whilst the king seeks not to antagonize Catholic Spain the zealous Lord Cecil and brutal William Wade are more fervent, executing Lady Dorothy Dibdale and the young priest she was hiding, to the horror of her niece Anne Vaux and cousin Robert Catesby. Robert and six friends are jailed for not attending church and on release gathers a gang of plotters to destroy the king and his government whilst Cecil releases convict William Turner to seek out the leading Jesuits Henry Garnet and William Stanley.
