If I had to pick a place to start, I'd start with Joe McCarthy. McCarthy thought that there were communists everywhere; State Department, writers, journalists. He's in the middle of one of his most famous hearings, looking for reds in the army. The guy's practically wearing a giant neon sign that says "Rittenhouse".
