Vittorio Taviani was unable to be on set during principal photography due to health reasons, which is why Paolo Taviani is listed as the sole director in the closing credits (although the opening titles credit the film to both brothers). Vittorio was also unable to attend the film's Italian premiere and press conference at the 2017 Rome Film Fest, and passed away five months later. See more »
There might be a good movie lurking somewhere here, but the Tavianis completely failed to find it. Instead, we are left with this muddled mess. One wonders if they shot a six hour version and gave it to grade schooler to edit into the movie that was released.
The Tavianis made some great movies in their day, but judging by this movie, that day is past.
On the plus side, it is pretty.
