David Ayer to Direct WWII Tank Drama El-Alamein

Joseph Baxter Aug 8, 2019

Suicide Squad director David Ayer is in talks to direct WWII thriller El-Alamein, named after the crucial battle in Egypt.

David Ayer, perhaps best known as the director of 2016 DC movie Suicide Squad, is returning to the genre of World War II tank battle epics, which he famously fielded as writer/director of the 2014 Brad Pitt-headlined Fury. With that WWII tank movie covering the War’s European Theater, he’s now eyeing an adaptation of a key skirmish in the Mediterranean, African and Middle East Theater, with a film titled El-Alamein.

Lionsgate is in talks with Ayer to direct El-Alamein, reports Deadline. The war drama will center on the 1942 WWII tanks-teeming battle in the Egyptian coastal town, just 150 miles west of Cairo. The script has already undergone rewrites, with the first draft, by David Self, recently getting turned over to James Coyne. With Ayer’s tendency

Gemini Man Featurette Explores De-Aging Process: A Tale of Two Will Smiths

  • MovieWeb
Paramount released a new featurette and images from Ang Lee's upcoming action thriller, Gemini Man. The film stars Will Smith (Aladdin) as both the fifty year old assassin and his twenty three year old self that's hunting him. The featurette takes a quick look at the technology used to create Will's younger self.

Will Smith is seen using performance capture technology in a scene with co-star Clive Owen (Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets). VFX Supervisor Bill Westenhofer, however, insists that it's new.

"This is not de-aging. This is not face-replacement. What you see for Junior is a completely digital creation 100% driven by Will Smith's performance."

Motion-capture technology has become commonplace in big budget and tentpole films today. The early stages of the technology was first popularized by Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The Visual Effects team were able to capture expert performance-capture

Netflix Budget for Dwayne Johnson’s ‘Red Notice’ Could Hit Massive $200 Million — Report
Last week’s report that Netflix was cutting back on its budgets for original film and television projects is not applying to “Red Notice,” the action thriller starring Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot, and Ryan Reynolds that the streaming giant picked up on July 8. “Red Notice,” directed by Johnson’s “Central Intelligence” and “Skyscraper” helmer Rawson Marshall Thurber, was originally set up at Universal for a November 2020 release before moving to Netflix.

A new report from Variety claims Netflix could be spending a massive $200 million on “Red Notice.” One insider told the publication the budget was roughly $160 million, although Variety reports with additional fees that number could easily get closer to $200 million. Even the reported $160 million price tag would make “Red Notice” the most expensive original in Netflix’s history. Johnson thanked Netflix on social media for “making its largest commitment ever to a feature film.”

MGM drops Max Landis sci-fi Deeper following sexual assault allegations

Earlier this week, The Daily Beast posted a damning article on Hollywood screenwriter, producer and scumbag Max Landis, which included multiple allegations of sexual assault and abuse from numerous women dating back many years.

In response to the shocking allegations in the expose, MGM has confirmed via IndieWire that it has decided to drop the Landis-penned sci-fi thriller Deeper, which was set to see Baltasar Kormakur (Everest) directing and Idris Elba (Thor: Ragnarok) starring, while Landis’ management company have also severed all ties.

Landis – whose credits include the likes of Chronicle, American Ultra, Victor Frankenstein and Bright – has long been criticised for misogynistic statements, and back in December 2017 he was accused of sexual assault by actress and comedian Anna Akana. His alleged abuse of women was described as an “open secret” in Hollywood, with claims that he’d avoided being called to task due to his status as a rising talent,

Max Landis Should Have Been Thrown Out of Hollywood Years Ago — Analysis

In April 2016, MGM won an auction for a Max Landis-penned underwater horror script, “Deeper,” with Bradley Cooper and “White God” director Kornel Mundruczo attached. When the timing didn’t work for the talent, MGM pressed forward on the project, hiring Baltasar Kormakur (“Everest”) last fall; in February, Idris Elba was reportedly in talks to star. Today, Landis is the subject of a searing expose by Amy Zimmerman in The Daily Beast — and, according to sources who requested anonymity, “Deeper” has fallen apart.

Of course, movies come together or don’t all the time, for reasons large and small. However, this may be the first indication that Landis’ counterintuitive, decade-long career path — one that included making critically reviled films while enjoying a long-term reputation as an unabashed emotional and sexual abuser of women — is no longer one that will scale.

Landis first garnered attention as the screenwriter of Josh Trank’s 2012 everyman-superhero film “Chronicle.
