Review: Death Race 2050 (2017), another cheesefest from Roger Corman shot in Peru

Much like another Roger Corman production I reviewed a couple of months ago —the ever-hilarious and generically-named Ultra Warrior—, Death Race 2050 is an apocalyptic, grim-yet-colourful action movie set in a futuristic United States, but shot in my native Peru. The main difference is that this is no longer talking about 80s cinema. No, Death Race 2050 was released earlier this year, meaning one can expect a little more polish —and a truckload of digital effects— from the movie, instead of mullets and cheesy dubbing. This doesn’t make the film any less absurd or cheap-looking than Ultra Warrior. Or any less memorable than the original Death Race movie, for that matter. Actually, I found the movie to be quite refreshing, especially when compared to its...

The Overlook Film Festival 2017 Interview with Roger Corman

At this past weekend’s Overlook Film Festival, Roger Corman was on hand to receive the “Master of Horror Award,” presented by Mick Garris. There are few people in the movie industry that have had the long lasting effect that Roger Corman has, and I was honored to speak with him during the festival to get his thoughts on modern filmmaking, seeing his older films digitally restored, and he also gave his advice to young filmmakers looking to stand out from the pack.

Congratulations on receiving the Master of Horror Award at the Overlook Film Festival. It’s such a great team behind the festival and I’m happy to see you as the first in hopefully a long line of “Master of Horror” recipients.

Roger Corman: I'm very pleased because I know the festival. I know this is the first time it's been held here, but I've known Mick Garris for many years,

Roger Corman Wants to Make a Movie About Philippines’ Rodrigo Duterte

Roger Corman Wants to Make a Movie About Philippines’ Rodrigo Duterte
Roger Corman is best known as the B-movie maverick behind such cult favorites as “Death Race 2000” and “Piranha,” in addition to his role in mentoring talented filmmakers ranging from Martin Scorsese to James Cameron. At 91 years old, Corman hasn’t stopped producing low-budget exploitation movies — the direct-to-dvd “Death Race 2050” came out earlier this year — and he’s still keen on injecting his projects with pointed social commentary about modern times. The next project he’s developing may be his most topical in years.

While President Donald Trump has been recently assailed for inviting Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte to the White House, Corman has already been cooking up a movie inspired by the controversial figure, whose anti-drug crackdown has led to a reported 7,000 extrajudicial killings. Tentatively titled “Death Squad,” the movie focuses a post-apocalyptic world in which a tyrannical ruler orders extrajudicial killings supposedly to alleviate crime, which leads

DVD Review – Death Race 2050 (2017)

Death Race 2050, 2017

Written and Directed by G.J. Echtemkamp.

Starring Manu Bennett, Malcom McDowell, Marci Miller, Burt Grinstead and Folake Olowofoyeku.

Synopsis:

America is now a corporation where states have melded into one, entertainment is beamed through headsets into the minds of docile masses and anarchy reigns supreme. A chosen few are held up as heroes warped, twisted and manipulated into an image which suits The Chairman and The Death Race. Careening across different zones in wildly supped up cars, these men, women and artificial lifeforms mow down pensioners, children, immigrants and the infirm without impunity for points towards an ultimate goal.

This sequel to the 1975 Paul Bartel cult classic is big on kitsch, low on production values and revels in camp with a tongue firmly planted in its cheek. Employing back projection during a majority of in car conversations, outlandishly fake scenery and acting which redefines caricature, Death Race 2050

B-movie king Roger Corman: ‘Death Race isn’t an essay on violence – it’s an action comedy’

With the release of Death Race 2050, a remake of his cult classic, the veteran director talks about the film’s political undertones – and how he became the king of trash

To be considered a genius, you need only one great idea. For Moses, it was parting the Red Sea, then closing it with Pharaoh’s army still inside. Bach had counterpoint. And Lady Godiva did that thing with the horse.

Six decades ago, Roger Corman got a really great idea. Realising that young people were being ignored by Hollywood, he began making tons of super-low-budget films about vampires, monsters, mutants, ghosts and moody bikers. The films had names such as Swamp Women, She Gods of Shark Reef, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Fast and the Furious. This was preferable to films with names such as That Touch of Mink and Father Goose.

Pick of the WeekBad Day at Black Rock [Warner Archive]

What is it? A one-armed man arrives via train in a remote western town, and the populace reacts with suspicion and violence.

Why buy it? Spencer Tracy excels as the polite but mysterious stranger whose presence sets everyone on edge, and the more he probes the harder they push. The film explores threads of America’s deep-seated racism and small-town insulation, and it pairs that commentary with a steadily increasing suspense. The themes and actions here are still sadly relevant, even now, and it makes for an important watch that still manages to entertain. Tracy’s potential adversaries include Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine, Walter Brennan, and

Interview: Legendary Filmmaker Roger Corman Discusses Death Race 2050

  • DailyDead
Racing onto Blu-ray, DVD, and digital platforms everywhere on January 17th is Death Race 2050, which was co-written and directed by G.J. Echternkamp and produced by the legendary Roger Corman, who was also the producing force behind Death Race 2000 back in the mid-1970s.

In late 2016, just a day or two after the 2016 Presidential Election, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with Corman about this latest iteration of the Death Race universe. During our conversation, Corman discussed the socio-political relevance of both Death Race 2050 as well as the original Death Race, why they chose to return to the retro-futuristic realm for this iteration, collaborating with Echternkamp, and what keeps him going after enjoying a successful career in Hollywood for over 60 years now.

Great to speak to you today, Roger. I have a feeling this conversation would have went a little bit differently had the election gone a different way.
