With ‘Good Boys,’ Universal Keeps Beating Box Office Slump for Comedy
Good Boys” was quite a surprise for box office analysts this weekend. Riding off of strong reviews and audience word of mouth, Universal’s raunchy comedy about a group of sixth graders wading into the world of girls and hormones has earned a $21 million opening this weekend, nearly double the $11 million opening set by independent projections prior to release.

“It seems that Universal has cracked the comedy code and thus has been somewhat immune to the movie comedy curse by releasing a steady lineup of original and appealing comedies that have bucked the trend of audience indifference,” comScore’s Paul Dergarabedian told TheWrap.

It’s a win for comedy movies at a time when such success is becoming increasingly rare for the genre. But while other studios have contributed those occasional hits in the last three years — Warner Bros.’ “Game Night” and Lionsgate’s “Madea” series come to mind — the

Scarlett Johansson in Rough Night: The Most Awkward Performance Ever?

Tom Jolliffe takes a look at what might be the most awkward performance ever, Scarlett Johansson in Rough Night

Cinema is full of great performances. Some actors become synonymous with certain characters, or genres and that synergy between part and person is perfect. Arnold Schwarzenegger is a perfect cyborg. Jack Nicholson is so perfectly Jack Torrance. De Niro so perfectly Travis Bickle.

It doesn’t always work out that way. You have plain bad performances. Maybe in theory something seems perfect but doesn’t work out so. Christopher Waltz as a Bond villain? That’s got excellence written all over it, right? Well, the reality wasn’t so excellent. Sometimes an actor is clearly approaching something for a quick paycheck or half-assed. Ask Bruce Willis about that. Or you can have plain old miscasting. Denise Richards as a Nuclear physicist? Oh boy.

However, what about times when a thespian who

Film Review: ‘Someone Great’

Film Review: ‘Someone Great’
There simply aren’t enough modern romantic comedies that cherish the merits of female friendship in the aftermath of a romantic breakup. There are even fewer that feel like a personal, lived-in experience. Female-driven raunchcoms (like “Girls Trip”) have explored this territory to a certain extent, though many stop short of delivering genuine poignancy (like “Rough Night”).

That’s where writer-director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s “Someone Great” helps fill an aching void. This fun, feminist-friendly feature, about a woman devastated by the disintegration of her long-term romance and the two best friends who rally around her for one final night of frivolity, taps into that collective yearning for more. It gifts us with the next big “Girls Night In” event, for which Netflix has cornered the market.

Jenny (Gina Rodriguez) and Nate (Lakeith Stanfield) had a bright future together. However, nine years time and different career trajectories — hers as a
