Jamie's men reach Charles Stuart's camp where, unlike Claire, Jamie believes he can change history and is put in command after Stuart's commanders argue amongst themselves as to strategy. A young local shows Jamie a hidden path, allowing the Highlanders to creep up on the English army, taking them by surprise and thus winning the battle of Prestonpans. There are many casualties on both sides, including some of Jamie's closest friends, and Claire is kept busy in her field hospital. She also reminds Jamie that, whereas she was right about the Scots winning at Prestonpans, her prediction regarding the outcome at Culloden will be just as accurate.
