When Ford kidnaps Russ he chains Russ to a pole in a basement. In the first season of Breaking Bad, Walt chains crazy 8 to a pole in a basement that is the same layout of the basement Russ was in. Both shows were written by Vince Gilligan.

Russ's insulin scheme should have been a lot more complicated-which would have been to his advantage: he also needs to know his blood sugar level before he takes the insulin (to know how much insulin to inject), so Mitchell would also need to get him a glucometer and testing strips. He could have told Mitchell he takes both long-acting and short-acting insulin or a combination of insulin and oral medication; Mitchell's knowledge of diabetes is presumably limited to the prison infirmary and what he could find on veterinary insulin on the internet. In addition, Mitchell only gets the insulin when Russ convinces him a dead hostage isn't worth as much- but an insulin overdose will kill Russ either way, so he's taking a huge gamble by not properly measuring the insulin dosage.
