Storyline

In 2006 Emily and Tony Hughes and their little boy Oliver are on holiday at Chalons Du Bois in France. Tony and his son visit a bar to watch get a drink which is crowded due to patrons watching a football match on television, but when Tony turns round Oliver has gone. Tony contacts the local police and asks for English-speaking Laurence Relaud to continue to be involved with the investigation. Parisian detective Julien Baptiste soon joins and leads the search and issues an abduction alert. Emily's parents Penny and Robert turn up, Robert suggesting that Oliver has been kidnapped out of revenge. Also on the scene are journalist Malik Suri and the English police liaison officer Mark Walsh with his young son. Eight years later Emily has moved on and is now living with Mark. Harry and Jack Williams use two timelines to set up the first episode of The Missing.

It also raises further questions as we see events in 2006 and eight years later in 2014.

James Nesbitt plays Jack an every man whose life takes a drastic turn for the worse when his young son Ollie gets lost in a crowded bar in France where they are holidaying.

Detective Baptiste (Tchéky Karyo) is a veteran detective called in to investigate and help out the distraught parents, Jack and Emily (Francis O'Connor.)

In the present time line of 2014. Jack is a haunted man still in France, his marriage with Emily has collapsed. He sees Baptiste as Jack has found new evidence that he wants investigating. Jack is obsessed with finding his son, he cannot let go. Baptiste meanwhile now has a pronounced limp.

The series was controversial when broadcast because of the perceived similarities with the real life Madeline McCann case. It then took its own identity in subsequent episodes no doubt helped by a mesmerising performance from Karyo.
