Storyline

The impending hurricane to hit the Gulf Coast, which will peripherally affect Dallas, matches the excitement at Cardiff Electric as the PC team seems to have achieved its goal of producing a portable PC that is smaller and faster than anything on the market. This excitement is tempered by an incident that shows Joe his pecking order in the company, and Cameron's vision for the project, which she sees as so much more than just another boring beige box as she refers to PCs. For Cameron's vision to be realized, she needs both Gordon's support in extra hardware requirements, and Joe's approval. While Joe ponders the idea, Gordon is less than willing to compromise what he already sees as a great product for Cameron's fanciful whims. With Donna's help, Gordon believes he has to do more than just talk to Joe to convince him his stand is correct. In the heat of the moment, Gordon promises Donna that he will go out to buy Joanie a present she wants, some new toy called a Cabbage Patch Kid, ... Written by Huggo

Trivia

The radio news broadcast at the beginning of this episode, playing as Gordon awakens from his dream sequence, reveals that the hurricane featured is Hurricane Alicia. This was a real hurricane that made landfall August 18, 1983 near Galveston, TX as a category 3 storm. In advance of Alicia, offshore drilling platforms were indeed evacuated, as mentioned on the radio. Hurricane Alicia caused severe damage and the name was retired in spring 1984. See more »

Goofs

When Cameron is editing the new operating system code, the C language code seen on her CRT includes syntax from the 1990 standard which would not have been available in 1983. See more »

When Is He Lying?

After coming up with their prototype, Cameron begins pushing for the operating system to have some personality. Gordon is getting more and more tightly wound. He has put so much into the technology that he can't bear to go back and add to what is there (it would require redoing significant work. Gordon, for some strange reason, invites Joe to his house on a night when a hurricane hits. Because Gordon has done such an awful job as a father, he drives through the rain and wind, trying to buy a Cabbage Patch Kid (remember those?). Somehow, after an incredibly uncomfortable entrance, Joe bonds with Gordon's little girls, and we get to see a bit of humanity in him. Gordon arrives home very late after a horrible experience. This is non-stop entertainment with potential disaster at every turn.
