Disappointed
30 October 2013 | by darkholmephoneSee all my reviews

There are very few episodes of supernatural I didn't enjoy.

Unfortunately this was one of them. The entire episode I had a pit in my stomach, and the thought "Oh dear god, I hope they don't keep going with this plot thread, abort, abort" kept coming to mind.

The ongoing plot stuff of the season (and the interaction between Sam, Dean, and the other recurring characters) was all that redeemed the episode. The plot of the episode itself was too campy and silly, in a show I enjoy partially because it's not overly campy like some of the other Urban Fantasy type shows.

Perhaps they were testing to take the show in a very different direction, perhaps they want to consider some kind of spin off with a very different tone. While I would love a spin off (perhaps set in the 30s, or some other time before Sam and Dean were born, dealing with some of the back-history they've established in the show >> or perhaps in current time, with ties through some of the minor characters they've introduced thus far), I'm not interested in a spin off based on the plot of this episode.

This plot would have been too campy in Dresden Files, Buffy, Angel, and Grimm, Lost Girl, and Reaper, all of which are still notably campier than Supernatural.

It felt like the writers of Charmed and *Once Upon a Time got together and wrote the most childish episode of Supernatural they could manage using the characters available, and frankly, I did not enjoy it at all.

*I don't actually mind Once Upon a Time, it's an alright show, but it does not keep my interest for long; it's a show I will watch if someone else has it playing in the background, but not a show I will actively go out of my way to watch myself. Bringing what is likely my favorite show down to "Eh, I guess I'll watch it if I can't think of anything better to do" is very much not what I want.
