Bates Motel: 'The Truth' (2013)

Rating: C

A&E's "Bates Motel" mini-series is basically going to be re-working PSYCHO IV. If you've seen that film then you know it shows what was going on with Mrs. Bates and Norman before the events in the original Alfred Hitchcock film. While that prequel wasn't perfect, it at least put a nice wrap-around story to the original film.

Episode number six follows a rather bad one and sadly this here isn't an improvement. This episode once again finds Norman, Dylan and Norma trying to make sure the past doesn't come back to haunt this. With this in mind, Dylan and Norman must try and free Norma from her relationship with the evil cop but things get even harder once the Chinese sex slave gets known by all. While all of this is going on Dylan once again tries to talk Norman into leaving with him.

I said the previous episode was incredibly stupid and sadly the stupidity continued here. You know, I'm the type of person who sticks with someone once he's started it. This could be going through an entire movie series even if I don't like the first few films. This is also true of this TV series because if I believed in walking away or turning something off then I'd probably walk away from this. Yes, the actors are all giving excellent performances but for the life of me I can't help but be annoyed with the various story lines that are currently going on. Yes, the stuff with the sex slave has been silly from day one and they had to end it somehow but what happens here is just downright silly. I'm sure it was meant to be dramatic but it just had me rolling my eyes. I'm not going to ruin the big showdown that takes up the final fifteen-minutes but I didn't think any of it worked and the big twist that happens at the end just wasn't all that shocking. After two rather boring and dumb episodes, the series really needs to come back with something strong or else it risks completely falling off the rails.
