August's Must See Movies
Kids may be gearing up to head back to school but the box office boom doesn't stop in August. In fact, August has proven to be a coveted calendar spot in recent years, with huge opening weekends for movies like Suicide Squad (2016) and Guardians of the Galaxy (2014). This year should be no exception given the blockbusters on the horizon.

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw will punch its way onto the wonderfully crowded movie theater marquee on August 2, joining lingering critical and commercial smashes like the Avengers: Endgame palette cleanser Spider-Man: Far From Home and Disney/Pixar's Toy Story 4 and this week's loud-roaring arrival, The Lion King.

We know you'll want to see as many of next month's movies as you can, but don't feel overwhelmed! We've got you covered. Not only have we assembled this handy list of August's Must See Movies, but we've got all

Jason Statham Says X-Rated Scenes Were Cut From Hobbs & Shaw

Dwayne Johnson may not be returning for Fast and Furious 9 and 10 in the wake of his well-publicized behind-the-scenes issues with franchise figurehead Vin Diesel, but that hasn’t stopped the actor from reprising his role as Dss agent Luke Hobbs in upcoming spinoff Hobbs & Shaw alongside Jason Statham.

The chemistry between the two action superstars was one of the highlights of Fast and Furious 8, and with Universal keen to keep milking the long-running series for every penny, putting the two together in a buddy movie was a no-brainer. From the footage seen so far, Hobbs & Show looks patently ridiculous, stupidly over-the-top, incredibly loud and just as dumb. All of which means it may very well be the most fun time you’ll have at the movies this year.

Jason Statham revealed in a recent interview though that some of the fight scenes they shot for the film were actually

Hobbs & Shaw Racing Toward Low $60M Opening, But Will Have Long Box Office Legs

Hobbs & Shaw Racing Toward Low $60M Opening, But Will Have Long Box Office Legs
The early box office projections are in for Hobbs & Shaw and it looks like this could be a profitable way to further the Fast and Furious franchise. The spin-off centers on Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's Luke Hobbs and Jason Statham's Deckard Shaw. This is the first time a spin-off of any kind is being released outside of the main franchise, which makes this something of a gamble for Universal Pictures. But it looks like that gamble is going to pay off. Just perhaps not as big as it would for one of the main entries.

According to a new report, Hobbs & Shaw is tracking for a lower $60 million opening weekend domestically when it arrives in theaters next month. Yes, that is a whole lot lower than the record-breaking box office opening weekends of both Furious 7 ($147 million) and The Fate of the Furious ($98 million). But a spin-off like this

Movie Review – Anna (2019)

Anna, 2019.

Directed by Luc Besson.

Starring Sasha Luss, Luke Evans, Cillian Murphy, Helen Mirren, Lera Abova and Eric Godon.

Synopsis:

A Russian woman escapes her abusive home when she is offered a chance at a new life if she agrees to work for the Kgb.

It’s fair to say that, if you’ve seen a female-led action movie in the last decade or two, you’ve basically already seen Anna – the new film from Luc Besson. This is a two-hour confection of standard, glossy thrills, peppered with energetic action sequences. And though that’s not particularly exciting, it is basically fine.

Sasha Luss is the titular Kgb hired muscle, plucked from an abusive partner by experienced operative Alex (Luke Evans) and given the opportunity to impress spy chief Olga (Helen Mirren). She’s soon on a mission in Paris where she infiltrates a modelling agency in order to get

The Best Action Scenes of the Decade, Part 2: Don't Stop Me Now

The past ten years have been, among other things, a banner decade for action cinema. With 2020 around the corner, we wanted to celebrate the ongoing vibrancy of the genre through highlighting the best action scenes of the 2010s, since it is the action scene that has traditionally been the most concentrated, heightened expression of action filmmaking craft. And it is craft that this article focuses on: the specific and concrete ways in which various facets like narrative, mise-en-scène, sound, and editing work together to produce exceptional action. The following is Part 2 of the round-up; Part 1 can be found here.One-woman ARMYThe next film on our list is helmed by a director who had never directed a pure action film up until this point. Then again, if your name is Steven Soderbergh, breaking new ground is part of your modus operandi, and with Haywire (2011), more than ground is broken over the

The Best Action Scenes of the Decade, Part 1: Para Bellum

Part 1 of a two-part series spotlighting the best action scenes of the 2010s. Part 2 is coming soon.John Wick doesn’t walk. He hobbles, slightly hunched over from the strain of fresh wounds and a general, existential exhaustion. As played by Keanu Reeves, Wick departs from the actor’s nimbler roles of yore—hotshot FBI surfer Johnny Utah, runaway-bus-stopping Jack Traven, humanity’s machine age savior Neo—in that, although he fights with practiced skill, the violence weighs on him. One scene part way through John Wick: Chapter Two (2017) does an especially effective job at highlighting Wick’s vulnerability by pitting a bunch of assassins against him, a series of fights that’s presented via montage to heighten the sense of bombardment. As Wick just barely fends off his attackers, Reeves makes age and gravity readable in the character’s jerky, slightly tremulous movements, and rather than fighting silent and

Incredible Third Trailer for 'Hobbs & Shaw' Starring Johnson & Statham

"We're going to need cars, and guns." Universal has revealed a third & final official trailer (first and second) for Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, the unbelievably badass new Fast & Furious "spin-off" movie focusing on the two characters in the title - Luke Hobbs (played by Dwayne Johnson) and Deckard Shaw (played by Jason Statham). Made by the director of John Wick (co-director), Atomic Blonde, and Deadpool 2, this is shaping up to be one of the most entertaining summer action movies. And it will be in theaters in just over a month! In this Fast & Furious spin-off continuation, lawman Hobbs and outcast Shaw form an unlikely alliance when a cyber-genetically enhanced villain threatens the future of humanity. ‘Anna’ Film Review: Luc Besson Repurposes His Own ‘La Femme Nikita,’ But Hey, the Wigs Look Great

‘Anna’ Film Review: Luc Besson Repurposes His Own ‘La Femme Nikita,’ But Hey, the Wigs Look Great
“Anna,” the new thriller about a supermodel who’s also a Russian assassin, is a film with many, many wigs. Long wigs, short wigs, red wigs, silver wigs. The film’s star, Sasha Luss, wears so many wigs throughout this movie that you may very well delight in counting them all. It’s probably the most entertainment you’ll get out of this flimsy “La Femme Nikita” knockoff.

Writer-director Luc Besson, who also wrote and directed “La Femme Nikita” almost 30 years ago, once again tells the story of a troubled young woman, addicted to drugs and incredibly violent, who gets pulled into the world of espionage after a robbery gone wrong, by an agent with whom she forms a romantic attraction. Once again, her first assignment is a dangerous hit that takes place in a crowded restaurant, which goes completely awry on purpose, and once again, she discovers that the

Film Review: Luc Besson’s ‘Anna’

  • Variety
Film Review: Luc Besson’s ‘Anna’
Luc Besson’s “Anna” wrapped photography in December 2017. Less than three months later, Fox released “Red Sparrow,” an extra-icy Cold War thriller about a Russian ballerina (played by Jennifer Lawrence) recruited by Soviet foreign intelligence to become an assassin and spy, trained to use her sex appeal as a weapon while leveraging her intelligence to outwit her handlers.

The day “Red Sparrow” opened must have been a very bad one for Besson, since that movie is basically the smarter, more sophisticated version of the story he’d imagined for “Anna,” which stars model-turned-actress Sasha Luss as a Russian assassin turned model who dispatches Kgb targets between fashion shoots. You get the picture. Except that even “Red Sparrow” was a rehash of sorts.

A year earlier, Charlize Theron had appeared in “Atomic Blonde,” an intense triple-crossing, Iron Curtain action movie, which gave the Oscar-winning glamour queen the opportunity to demonstrate that

John Wick 4 Is Coming in Summer 2021

John Wick 4 Is Coming in Summer 2021
Keanu Reeves will be back as the legendary assassin John Wick for at least one more round of ultra-violent, pulse-pounding action. Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment have confirmed that John Wick 4 is indeed in the works. What's more, they've already locked down a release date for the sequel, and it's coming a little bit sooner than some may think, as the studio has planted a flag for May 2021.

The news was confirmed by the studio via a text message that was sent to those who had signed up for updates regarding John Wick 3: Parabellum. The text message not only confirmed that a fourth installment is happening, but revealed a May 21, 2021 release date. That means Lionsgate is sticking to their strategy of treating this as more of a summer blockbuster action franchise. The previous two installments were released in October 2014 and February 2017, respectively. At the present time, no further details have been revealed,

Michelle Rodriguez Joins ‘Fast & Furious 9’ After Getting Series to Hire First Female Writer

Michelle Rodriguez Joins ‘Fast & Furious 9’ After Getting Series to Hire First Female Writer
The long-running “Fast and Furious” franchise has never lacked powerful female characters onscreen, from Michelle Rodriguez’s Letty to Gal Gadot’s Gisele, but it has struggled to be as representative behind the camera. No woman has ever directed a “Fast and Furious” movie, nor has a female screenwriter ever worked on a “Fast and Furious” script. Fortunately that’s about to change, and it’s all thanks to Michelle Rodriguez.

According to Bloomberg, Rodriguez has officially signed on to reprise her role of Leticia “Letty” Ortiz in “Fast & Furious 9.” The deal was made after Rodriguez secured an agreement to have a female screenwriter join the production. The actress made headlines in June 2017 for an Instagram post in which she threatened to leave the franchise unless producers showed “some love to the women of the franchise on the next one.”

“I felt like there was not enough of

John Wick 4 Already Being Planned Teases Director
It seems as though John Wick 4 may already be in the works. Keanu Reeves has been kicking major ass and racking up a seriously impressive number of headshots as the titular assassin ever since the first movie was released in 2014. With John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum hitting theaters this weekend, many fans have been wondering if this will be the final, proper entry in the franchise. Not so fast, as director Chad Stahelski has strongly suggested that a fourth entry is coming our way.

Chad Stahelski has been making the rounds promoting John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum. Recently, he was participating in an Ama and was asked if a fourth movie was in the cards. He initially said, "Up to you guys," since that would heavily depend on box office success. However, later on, he was asked about which movie was most challenging from a stunt perspective. Here's what Stahelski had to say.
