Howard Finster, the grandfather of the Southern Folk Art movement, was a pioneer that showed the world that Art can thrive outside of museums and galleries in ordinary places and in everyday objects. He took what others might deem trash or obsolete and turned it into something contemplative. He opened Paradise Garden for the world to enjoy, a true testament that Art comes to life, when people are able to interact with it. Howard Finster showed the world that objects surrounding us can take on a new life, in a sometimes magical way, and communicate messages that can lead to transformation.Written by
I didn't know anything about Howard Finster or Paradise Garden and I was blown away with this film. Everyone should see this "feel good" documentary that has so many great messages. I was especially inspired by the idea that this man was a Southern Baptist Preacher and after he retired had another full career as an artist. It is inspiring to think that it is never too late to do what you love. I am so impressed the he created more than 47,000 pieces of art. It was so interesting to see how he supported so many Georgia artists back in the 1980s, when he was so popular, and they went on to do such great work. It is amazing to see all these artists that went to Paradise Garden to visit Howard Finster, and then went on to become rock icons and international known artists. He said, "God is Love" and he lived that way.
