‘Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil’ Conjures $117M Offshore Bow While ‘Joker’ Jabs At $500M Overseas & Lands $738M WW So Far – International Box Office

  • Deadline
Update, writethru: Disney’s Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil came within, but on the low end, of pre-weekend industry projections with $117M at the international box office. Counting the disappointing domestic opening of $36M, the global debut is $153M.

Heading into the launch session, the industry was seeing a $115M-$125M overseas start for the Angelina Jolie sequel. The result is above the original’s 2014 opening of $109M in like-for-like markets and at today’s rates — just a roughly 7% bump.

The film did see upswings in weekend play and with good audience scores — plus, there’s nothing in the way in the coming weeks, apart from local product, until Disney’s own Frozen II in November. Disney’s President Theatrical Distribution, Franchise Management and Business & Audience Insights, Cathleen Taff, tells Deadline the film, which saw piçk-up on Saturday and Sunday, “seems to be connecting with fans and we are looking to

These Quotes Have Us Convinced That Kristen Bell Is That Cool Big Sis We Always Wanted

  • Popsugar
When it comes to Hollywood stars, there are few as funny, down-to-earth, and just plain honest as Kristen Bell. The star of such beloved stories as Frozen and The Good Place (plus the upcoming Veronica Mars revival on Hulu!) has gotten a reputation for being unfiltered and relatable in every interview she does. Whether she's opening up about her marriage to Dax Shepard or questioning the messages that Disney princess stories sometimes send, her comments are always quippy and quotable, but smart and memorable, too. We've rounded up some of Kristen's best wisdom for whenever you could use a bit of advice from Hollywood's cool big sis.

‘Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil’ Has Bad Spell Stateside With $36M+, ‘Joker’ Still The Man With $29M+, ‘Zombieland 2’ Reaps $26M+

  • Deadline
Sunday Am Update: Disney’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, despite being No. 1 this weekend, didn’t make enough money in the Us to justify its $185M production cost before P&a. It came in with $36M, an opening that’s 48% below the original 2014 movie’s $69.4M. The live-action sequel to the Sleeping Beauty spinoff also didn’t wow in China, where it opened to an estimated $22.4M, another sour showing in Prc next to Paramount/Skydance’s Gemini Man, which also paled with $20.9M. Social media ratings for both of those titles weren’t great, with respective Douban ratings of 6.2 and 7.1. In regards to Maleficent 2, Maoyan was much higher than Douban with 9.1 and Tpp an 8.8.

The global take for Maleficent 2 is $153M. Now I’ve been informed from finance sources that it’s a safe start worldwide to get this movie to break-even (which is around $400M), highly contingent on legs overseas.

‘Maleficent: Mistress of Evil’ Is a Melted, Wannabe ‘Frozen’

‘Maleficent: Mistress of Evil’ Is a Melted, Wannabe ‘Frozen’
When people talk about film as product instead of, say, art or entertainment, they’re referring to movies like Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. This misbegotten sequel to 2014’s not-so-hot Maleficent is a torturous exercise in brightly-colored monotony that chokes on repetitive screenwriting, amateurish directing, paycheck performances and digital hardware for a heart. Kids under five (months) might be fooled, but sentient filmgoers know a scam when they see one.

Angelina Jolie is back in the title role with a performance that’s 90% frosty glare. But how in hell is Maleficent the Mistress of Evil?

‘Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil’ To Seduce $165M-$175M Opening Around The World – Global Box Office Preview

  • Deadline
The sequel to Disney’s live-action spinoff of Sleeping Beauty, Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil, will not spread gloom and doom, rather box office boom, around the world this weekend with what is looking to be the third best October start of $165M-$175M after Joker ($248.4M) and Venom ($207.4M).

The movie in which Oscar winner Angelina Jolie reprises her role as the evil sorceress villain from Sleeping Beauty was originally expected to go over Memorial Day next year, however, pushed it up, which speaks plenty about their faith in the film. The weekend preceding Halloween use to be a dumping ground for films–anywhere from four or five titles would open here– however Universal/Miramax/Blumhouse’s Halloween changed all that last year with the now third-highest October domestic debut on record with $76.2M.

Maleficent 2 opens in all offshore markets this weekend, including China and Japan which often go later,

Billy Porter Will Play Cinderella's Fairy Godmother in the Upcoming Live-Action Remake
You bibbidi bobbidi better believe it! Billy Porter has officially been cast as the Fairy Godmother in James Corden's live-action Cinderella remake, and I'm already imagining the outfit possibilities. The Pose star will make an appearance on the big screen, alongside Camila Cabello as the enchanting princess herself.

The Cinderella reboot will be directed by Pitch Perfect's Kay Cannon. Porter will also star alongside Frozen's Idina Menzel, who will play Evelyn, Cinderella's evil stepmother and his character's polar opposite.

In addition to taking home the Emmy for outstanding lead actor in a drama series for his role as Pray Tell on Netflix's Pose in September, Porter is also working on a new album - set to be released in 2020 - and will star in the upcoming comedy film Like a Boss with Tiffany Haddish, Rose Byrne, and Salma Hayek.

Idina Menzel and Billy Porter in Talks to Join Camila Cabello in Sony's Cinderella

We’ve got a new Cinderella coming our way from Sony Pictures that will star the singer Camila Cabello. The star was cast two months ago, and we now have a couple more in talks to join the classic fairy tale. Idina Menzel, known for her award-winning performances in Broadway's Rent and Wicked, as well as the voice of Elsa in Frozen, is in talks to take on the role of Cinderella’s step-mother, Lady Tremaine.

This character has never had a singing role, but maybe they’ll be able to work up a song for her. I assume they’re making this iteration a musical since they cast the pop singer Cabello in the lead role.

The other character they are looking to cast is the Fairy Godmother. They have been in preliminary talks with Billy Porter to take on the role, but nothing has been set in stone regarding the casting.

Disney has released another trailer for Frozen 2, and it offers up more new footage from Elsa and Anna’s epic magical adventure. In the story, Elsa will fully embrace her powers in an effort to save her home of Arendelle after she and her family and friends learn that the kingdom is not safe.

I have no doubt that this is going to be a huge hit for Disney. It looks like it’ll be a solid sequel, and I’m kinda looking forward to seeing how this story is going to play out. This is a great group of characters, and it’ll be fun to see them on the big screen again on a new journey.

Here’s the synopsis for the film:

Why was Elsa born with magical powers? What truths about the past await Elsa as she ventures into the unknown to the enchanted forests and dark seas beyond Arendelle?
