Although the series is set on the fictional island of Saint-Marie, it is in fact filmed in the French owned islands of Guadeloupe. The police station is located in the town of Honoré, which is actually on the island of Basse-Terre, in the town of Deshaies.

In episode #2.7 (2013), the fictional hurricane is named Irma. In September 2017 filming was stopped owing to a real hurricane Irma passing near to Guadeloupe.

As of the debut, the programme shares several parallels with In the Heat of the Night (1988) and Longmire (2012), American programmes that ran for several seasons in different decades. All were set in a small town and follow the activities of the local police force. All have an unusually high number of murders, and feature an eccentric chief officer or sheriff.
