Review: Casey Affleck's amazing work anchors fest best 'Manchester By The Sea'

Review: Casey Affleck's amazing work anchors fest best 'Manchester By The Sea'
Grief is a terrible animal, red of claw and tooth, and once it gets hold of you, there is no way of knowing what it will do to you. Over the last year, I've watched a dear friend of mine struggle with back to back losses of two of the most important people in her life, and at times, I've genuinely worried that it would be too much for her to take. This is a strong, vibrant person, and grief landed on her in a way that very nearly crushed all of that joy and vitality right out of her. I've had my own bouts with profound sorrow over the last year as a result of the end of my marriage, and while I feel like I've reached the other side of all of that, I remain shaken by just how damaged I was by things. For the first time in my adult life,

Parker Posey gets her moment in new trailer for Woody Allen's 'Irrational Man'
Woody Allen is returning to Cannes next month with his 46th directorial effort, "Irrational Man." It's Allen's second collaboration with his latest lady muse, Emma Stone, and his first with the always mercurial, but talented Joaquin Phoenix.  Based on the trailer released today, "Irrational" appears to center on a "radical" philosophy professor, Abe Lucas (Phoenix), and the relationships he develops with a younger student (Emma Stone) and another professor (Parker Posey). Oh, and he might be going through some sort of mid-life crisis.  It's all pretty much expected from Allen at this stage of his career, except for one tiny element, a substantial role for the one and only Ms. Posey. The darling of the independent film world for a good portion of the '90s, Posey hasn't had a substantial film role since her Independent Spirit Award nominated performance in 2007's "Broken English." Instead, she's found critical acclaim for

The Maid’s Room | Review

Maid of Honor: Walker’s Thriller Uneasily Navigates Issues of Class

Serving as a portrayal of unsaid attitudes amongst the elitist denizens of the Hamptons that seems to ring true even when drowning in its over-the-top pronouncements, Michael Walker’s third feature, The Maid’s Room is a mixed bag of interesting ideas lost in a sea of underdevelopment. It’s never quite smart enough to be thrilling and hopelessly overwrought when its fragile examination of class issues necessitates more subtlety for success, but its fine for a late night cheapie that’s pretending to convey morality through martyrdom.

Recently emigrating from Bogota to the Hamptons, soft spoken transplant Drina (Paula Garces) accepts a position as a housemaid for the prosperous Crawford’s (Bill Camp and Annabelle Sciorra). The estate is more of a vacation or summer home for the wealthy couple, so they leave for distant climes while

Exclusive Clip From Psychological Thriller The Maid’s Room

Some of the best psychological thrillers of modern times have come from obscure directors working with unknown casts on tiny budgets. Take Nacho Vigalondo’s Timecrimes, Ben Wheatley’s Kill List and Alex R. Johnson’s Two Step as some recent examples. Next month will see the release of The Maid’s Room, from Price Check director Michael Walker. Whether it will be added to that list of unexpected gems remains to be seen, but the tense clip that We Got This Covered is exclusively debuting for you today is a very promising indicator.

In the clip, live-in maid Drina (Paula Garcés) discovers a newspaper clipping related to a recent hit-and-run, then overhears a conversation between her affluent employer Mr. Crawford (Bill Camp) and his teenage son Brandon (Philip Ettinger). The bits and pieces of what she hears sparks her realization that Brandon is responsible for the accident. It’s a brief,

Paladin to Release Thriller 'The Maid's Room' in Spring
Paladin will release the Hitchcockian thriller "The Maid's Room" in theaters and on digital platforms in the spring, company president Mark Urman announced today. The film, which was written and directed by Michael Walker ("Chasing Sleep," "Price Check"), had its world premiere last fall at the Hamptons International Film Festival. Set and filmed on Long Island, "The Maid's Room" follows Drina (Paula Garces), an immigrant who takes a job for the season as live-in maid to the Crawfords, a privileged New York family who maintain a splendid home in the Hamptons. Mr. and Mrs. Crawford spend most of their time in the city, but their teenage son, Brandon, spends the summer on the beach, and Drina must look after him and his spoiled friends. The maid’s room is next to the garage, and Drina overhears Brandon when he returns late one night, noisily and obviously drunk. The next day,

Judd Apatow's Trainwreck with Amy Schumer Gets Summer 2015 Release Date

Judd Apatow's Trainwreck with Amy Schumer Gets Summer 2015 Release Date
Universal Pictures has set a July 24, 2015 release date for the new comedy Trainwreck, which stars Amy Schumer and is directed by Judd Apatow. As of now, the movie doesn't have any direct competition, although it is sandwiched between two potential blockbusters, Warner Bros.' Batman Vs. Superman (July 17) and Marvel's Ant-Man (July 31).

We first reported on the project back in November, when Judd Apatow signed on to direct from Amy Schumer's own screenplay, which he helped develop. This project will mark the first time the filmmaker has directed a project he has not written. The story centers on a woman (Amy Schumer) trying to put her life back together. No other cast members have been attached, although our report from November indicates that casting is under way in New York City, with the director seeking actors to play the lead's boyfriend, her best friend and one of her co-workers.

The story follows a young woman (Amy Schumer) whose life is a complete mess, as she tries to get back on the right track. Insiders claim that the director has met with actors in Los Angeles throughout the month of November, while Amy Schumer and producer Barry Mendel are also holding casting sessions in New York.

While Judd Apatow has produced several projects he hasn't written or directed, this would mark his first feature directorial effort that he didn't write by himself. And Now a Word from Our Sponsor | Review

Commercial Failure: Bernbaum’s Debut Doa

What sounds good on paper doesn’t always translate well on screen, and Zack Bernbaum’s directorial debut, And Now a Word from Our Sponsor, exemplifies the delirious dangers of gimmicky filmmaking. A cutesy idea that doesn’t seem far removed from something that could have easily been a wooden studio feature top lining Jim Carrey or Adam Sandler, sinks like a lead balloon within its establishing frames. Instead of making any attempt to redirect from the predictable trajectory outlined by its feeble premise, Bernbaum, together with Michael Hamilton-Wright’s naggingly insistent screenplay, instead plunge head long into its flat concept, a stubborn perseverance that makes its slight running time a grueling test of patience.

Opening with a montage of famous commercials, we find the collapsed body of Adan Kundle (Bruce Greenwood), unconscious in a white room filled with static television sets. It turns

Sundance 2013: This Is Martin Bonner Review

As I said in my review of Price Check, a relatable situation does not create relatable or compelling characters.  It's important to have an emotional connection to a character, but it's also important to transport us to a place or a situation we don't normally experience.  I don't need to spend time seeing someone order food at Denny's or read a book while eating dinner.  Chad Hartigan's This Is Martin Bonner attempts to connect us into our lead protagonists by showing the loneliness of their mundane lives, but their situations are so crushingly dull that we can never create a bond despite the solid performances of lead actors Paul Eenhoorn and Richmond Arquette. Martin Bonner (Eenhoorn) has begun a job as a volunteer in a Christian-based transitional program for parolees.  He strikes up a friendship with the recently released Travis Holloway (Arquette) after giving Travis a lift to his motel.

Price Check | Review

Not the Bargain It Appears To Be

Price Check, director Michael Walker’s sophomore feature, coming twelve years after his 2000 debut, Chasing Sleep is a complete 180 from his first film. Whereas Walker’s first foray was in the psychological art house, this latest feature is a comedic character study that has one delectable asset that is both the sole reason to see the film, and also, sadly, what viciously outshines every other aspect of the film; and that’s a wickedly perfect role for Parker Posey.

Eric Mabius stars as Pete Cozy, a disinterested employee in regional pricing and marketing for a flagging grocery store company in Long Island. Having given up a career in producing music, Pete’s job supports his stay at home wife and their new child. When his boss suddenly leaves for bigger and better things, his replacement is a super motivated force of nature, Susan

Interview: Michael Walker Talks Price Check
Not having a large amount of money, and continuously learning how to cope with limited resources is a universal theme in the new comedy-drama ‘Price Check,’ which is now playing in select theaters. Not only does the movie’s main character, Pete Cozy, have to contend with not being able to provide for his family as much as he’d like, but the film’s writer-director, Michael Walker, also had to cope with a limited budget while shooting. But Walker took whatever measures necessary to ensure his film would get made, and infused that determination into Pete. ‘Price Check‘ follows Pete (played by Eric Mabius), who has found himself a house in the [ Read More ]
