TV Review: ‘Prodigal Son’
Darkness on network TV can feel a bit by-the-book; in order to impress us with how edgy they’re able to be within stricter boundaries than cable and streaming, dramas lard on violence and evil that can feel a bit unmotivated. Which is why “Prodigal Son,” a new Fox drama, is in its first three episodes a pleasant surprise: Its central serial killer underplays his viciousness.

That’s Michael Sheen, the accomplished Welsh actor, playing Dr. Martin Whitly; though I’d be unsurprised if he broke out for sweeps, he is in the show’s early going already imprisoned, and for years at that. The show’s drama and tension comes not from whether or not he’ll be caught but from what impact he has on his son (Tom Payne), a profiler who consults with the NYPD to help find and bring to justice killers. That son, Malcolm, comes to rely,

How 2020’s Fall TV Season Is Already Shaping Up
Aiming to stand out in a crowded field, broadcasters this season have leaned on the stability of their schedules and the return of established hits. But for many of the same reasons, they’ve also begun to seed the ground for next year’s crop of shows, considering that top performers like “How to Get Away With Murder,” “Empire” and “Supernatural” are on the way out. Indeed, the development for the 2020-21 season has been picking up steam, with a number of projects already announced. A key for network buyers: shows that will further refine their brands.

“They definitely need to think outside the box,” one TV lit agent who spoke with Variety says. “The usual stuff isn’t going to cut it.”

According to multiple agency sources, ABC is pushing hard to bring women back to the network under the stewardship of new ABC Entertainment head Karey Burke. To that end,

Both hail from ABC Studios.

The projects fall under a new three-year deal Mandeville closed with ABC Studios, part of Disney TV Studios, in late spring. The pact brings Mandeville’s tenure at ABC Studios to two decades. This Prodigal Son review contains no spoilers. The pilot is available to stream on YouTube through Sunday, September 15.

"There is no such thing as monsters," young Malcolm Bright is assured by his serial killer father early in the pilot of Fox's new twist on the police procedural Prodigal Son. This serves as the central dichotomy of the premise: being told by a monster they don't exist. Monsters don't want to get caught and they'll say anything to justify their continued freedom. Who could be better at catching these creatures than someone who was raised by one? Possibly no one, and probably anyone.

Malcolm, played by The Walking Dead's Tom Payne, grew up to be a psychologist, forensic profiler, and all around "acquired taste," according to NYPD Detective Gil Arroyo, played by Lou Diamond Phillips,

Emmy Handicaps 2019: Actress In A Drama Series
Due to the quirks of the Emmy race, this category’s line-up is almost entirely different from last year’s. In what may be a first for a major acting category like this, only one 2018 nominee is back for the 2019 go-round. Some of this year’s crop have, however, been nominees in this category before; they simply skipped 2018. On that list we have a previous five-time nominee whose show was ineligible last year, now returning for its final season; a previous winner in her first season, who’s now looking to get back to victory with three more seasons under her belt, and a past three-time supporting category nominee enjoying her first lead nod for the same role this year.

You call it crazy, she calls it winning: much to our surprise, Viola Davis has returned to the Best Drama Actress Emmy lineup for her role as Annalise Keating on ABC’s “How to Get Away With Murder.” She’s now a five-time nominee, after winning for the show’s freshman season in 2015 and receiving two subsequent noms in this category. She was dropped from the Drama Actress lineup last year, but even then she managed to sneak into Best Drama Guest Actress for bringing Annalise to “Scandal” in the alphabet network’s crossover storyline. Now she has submitted the ninth episode of “Murder’s” fifth season, “He Betrayed Us Both,” in the hopes of getting away with her second statuette.

This installment flashes back to 2005, when Annalise deals with the fallout of her stillbirth. Upon returning from the hospital, she’s instantly plagued by guilt and despondency. To fill the void,
