Jillian Bell on ‘Brittany Runs a Marathon’: ‘This Was the Movie I Wanted to See When I Was 13’
Jillian Bell takes the lead in “Brittany Runs a Marathon,” landing her first starring role in the Sundance hit.

“I feel very lucky and the project feels very special, very near and dear to my heart. We’re so proud of what we made,” Bell told Variety at the film’s premiere on Thursday night in Los Angeles. “I feel lucky even when I get to do a small part in anything and to have this be my first title lead role, I couldn’t ask for anything more.”

After stealing scenes in “22 Jump Street,” “Workaholics,” “The Night Before” and “Office Christmas Party,” Bell plays the titular character in the film, a young woman who finds herself prepping to run the New York City Marathon. Writer-director Paul Downs Colaizzo adapted the story from the true-life tale of his best friend, Brittany O’Neill.

“I just felt like I knew who she was.

Why ‘Brittany Runs a Marathon’ Deserves to Be This Summer’s Indie Breakout

Why ‘Brittany Runs a Marathon’ Deserves to Be This Summer’s Indie Breakout
Jillian Bell is a comedic force who steals scenes with a delivery that slides effortlessly between perky and profane. She’s been an unlikely drug dealer in “22 Jump Street,” a shrewd pimp in “Office Christmas Party,” even an aunt who gets attacked by a vampire poodle in “Goosebumps.” What she’s never played, however, is the lead role.

“A lot of times my character comes in, says something funny and then roots on the leading woman before leaving after talking about her cats or something,” says Bell.

Those days of appearing as the best friend or the quirky neighbor changed with “Brittany Runs a Marathon,” an inspirational comedy about a twentysomething woman who turns her life around when she decides to give up a hard-partying lifestyle and start training. The little indie electrified the Sundance Film Festival, winning the audience award and igniting a bidding war that culminated in

NBC revives A.P. Bio for third season on upcoming streaming service

After cancelling the Mike O’Brien comedy A.P. Bio in May, NBC has now reversed course and has renewed it for a third season. The series, which stars Glenn Howerton (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia), Tom Bennett (David Brent: Life on the Road) and Patton Oswalt (Happy!), will air on NBC’s upcoming streaming service.

The sudden revival was due in large part to outcry from the show’s fans over its cancellation as well as a boost in digital viewership during its second season, second only to Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

“I’m so overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from the fans,” said showrunner O’Brien. “The cast and I are thrilled that we get to make more and I’m excited to work with the NBCU streaming platform.”

A.P. Bio follows “a disgraced Harvard philosophy scholar (Howerton) who returns to hometown Toledo, Ohio, as a high school Advanced Placement biology teacher.

Joker Trailer Arrives, Joaquin Phoenix Is DC's Clown Prince
It was just yesterday that we passed along the first poster for The Hangover and Due Date co-writer-director Todd Phillips' gritty Joker origin film starring Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck aka The Clown Prince of Crime. That poster came to us from Phillips himself over on Instagram, and in his post, he promised us that the powers that be behind the scenes at Warner Bros. and DC would be dropping the teaser trailer on all of our heads today. And low and behold the director is a man of his word as today we have, you guessed it, the teaser trailer for Joker!

This teaser obviously gives us our first look at Phillips' new "dark and gritty" character study of the man who would be Joker. Set in Gotham City way back in 1981, Phillips' version of Batman's ultimate super-villain starts out as the rather simple tale of a

Disney–which owns Marvel–will become a majority shareholder in Hulu once the Fox-Disney merger is completed.

“Howard the Duck” will be written and executive produced by Kevin Smith and Dave Willis. Jennifer Aniston Admits That She Likes to Watch Television Naked: 'Is That Weird?'
One of the small screen’s most famous faces has a unique way of watching television.

On The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Ellen DeGeneres, 60, challenged her pal Jennifer Aniston, 49, to a game of Burning Questions — in which the guest (and sometimes the host) had to provide honest answers to quirky queries.

“Besides making love, showering or swimming, what is something else you have enjoyed doing naked?” DeGeneres asked.

“Watch TV,” the Office Christmas Party actress responded.

DeGeneres was surprised. “You watch TV naked?” she asked incredulously.

“Yeah,” Aniston replied. “Is that weird? I mean at night, you get into bed and you watch TV.

Jennifer Aniston Is an Unforgiving Pageant Mom in the Trailer For Netflix's Dumplin'
It's not often that Jennifer Aniston takes on a role that makes us kind of hate her a little bit, but Dumplin' seems to be her chance to change that.

The Office Christmas Party actress stars in the upcoming Netflix dramedy, based on the New York Times bestselling book by Julie Murphy, which follows an outspoken, curvy, Dolly Parton-obsessed teenager named Willowdean (Danielle Macdonald) as she navigates life under the rule of her overbearing pageant queen mother (Aniston) in small town Texas. In an act of protest against her mother's never-ending stream of pageants and disapproval, Will decides to enter her mother's local Miss Teen Blue Bonnet competition, which in turn encourages other contestants in town to do the same. Macdonald's comedic timing as she delivers lines like "I'm not the Joan of Arc of fat girls" already has us hooked.

‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout’ Tops Box Office Again With $35 Million 2nd Weekend

  • The Wrap
Paramount’s “Mission: Impossible — Fallout” has held on to No. 1 at the box office with a second weekend total of $35 million, bringing its domestic run to a ten-day total of $124 million.

After posting the best raw opening for the long-running Tom Cruise action series, “Fallout” is now 15 percent ahead of the pace set by “Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation” three years ago. This means that the film is on track to become the first Paramount release in four years to gross over $200 million domestically, the last being “Transformers: Age of Extinction” with $245 million in 2014.

After “Fallout,” however, the signs of an August slowdown similar to what the box office saw last year are starting to show. Disney’s “Christopher Robin” has opened to $25 million from 3,602 screens, below the studio’s expectations of a $27-30 million start.Critics were fairly positive with a 68 percent Rotten Tomatoes score, while opening night audiences loved

‘Mission: Impossible 6’ Leaps Over ‘Christopher Robin’ at Box Office

  • The Wrap
‘Mission: Impossible 6’ Leaps Over ‘Christopher Robin’ at Box Office
Like Tom Cruise dangling from the underside of a helicopter, Paramount’s “Mission: Impossible — Fallout” is holding on quite well in its second weekend at the box office, earning $9.8 million on its second Friday as industry estimates place the film at No. 1 for the weekend with $34 million.

That total signify just a 44 percent drop from the action film’s $61 million opening, a better result than the $28 million and 48 percent drop earned in the second weekend by “Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation” three years ago.

But while Cruise and Paramount are having a good second round, this weekends new releases are struggling to meet box office expectations, a sign that it is going to be another sluggish August for movie theaters. Disney’s “Christopher Robin” leads the new releases in second place, opening below “Fallout” $9.4 million on Friday with estimates pegging a $27 million opening.
