As Henry's health deteriorates, he grows depressed and introspective as the ghosts of the past come to haunt him, and various factions in the court try to position themselves favorably for the succession after his death. Bishop Gardiner continues to pursue Anne Stanhope and the Queen for heresy but is thwarted by some unforeseen circumstances. Sensitive to his legacy, the King commissions a portrait from Holbein as Charles Brandon's health decline too.

King Henry VIII
When we compare the present life of man on Earth with that time of which we have no knowledge, it seems to me like a swift flight of a single sparrow through a banquet hall on a winter's day. After a few moments of comfort, he vanishes from sight into the wintry world from which he came. Even so, man appears on Earth for a little while, but of what went before this life or what will follow, we know nothing.
