Scientists Fact Check and Discuss Natural Disasters in Movies

Hollywood has always enjoyed making movies set around natural disasters. There’s just something about watching mother nature destroy big cities and iconic landmarks that audiences enjoy.

Well, Vanity Fair gathered together environmental scientists Morgan Page, Michael Angove and Peter Gleick to sit down and watch some of the natural disaster scenes from movies so that they could fact check them and offer some insight.

The movies they discuss in the video include San Andreas, 2012, The Day After Tomorrow, Volcano, Twister, Geostorm, The Core, Interstellar, Sharknado, The Perfect Storm, Pompeii, Noah, The Impossible, The Happening, Into the Storm and even Hard Rain.

It’s interesting listening to what these scientists have to say about the natural disasters in these movies. Some of the movies get it right while others are way off the mark.

Behind-the-Scenes Video of David Lynch’s ‘Mulholland Drive’ Is an Acting Master Class With Naomi Watts
The last 30 minutes of David Lynch’s 2001 brain-bending masterpiece “Mulholland Drive” offer up a harrowing free-fall into a woman’s unraveling psyche — thanks to a mesmerizing performance by Naomi Watts, who subtly shifts from wide-eyed credulity to broken-down hysteria and back again, as the gravity of her character’s situation comes into shattering focus.

In a clip below that has recently surfaced on Twitter, watch as Watts gives a master class in wordless acting during a pivotal scene where her character, who is at this point Diane Selwyn, realizes she’s being dumped by not only her director (Justin Theroux), but also her would-be girlfriend (Laura Elena Harring). As it takes place in the film, the whole scene is excruciating to watch — and no doubt one of the most uncomfortably real depictions of a mind processing a breakup ever.

Naomi Watts gets applause from David Lynch and crew for her powerful non-verbal acting performance pic.
