According to French inheritance laws, children are specifically protected from being excluded from the estate. The part of the estate that is earmarked for descendants is called "the reserve." The reserve for one child is 1/2; two children is 2/3; three children is 3/4. A surviving spouse may be excluded from the will, but will receive 50% of joint assets; the reserve for an unexcluded spouse is 1/4.
