[Morgan asks Rick if he knows about the dead people walking]
Morgan Jones : Hey, mister, you even know what's going on?
Rick Grimes : I woke up today in the hospital, came home, and that's all I know.
Morgan Jones : But you know about the dead people, right?
Rick Grimes : Yeah, I saw a lot of that. Out on the loading dock, piled in trucks.
Morgan Jones : No... Not the ones they put down. The ones they didn't. The walkers. Like the one I shot today. 'Cause he'd have ripped into you, tried to eat you, taken some flesh at least. Well, I guess if this is the first you're hearing it, I know how it must sound...
[Duane asks his father and Rick if he can learn how to shoot]
Duane Jones : Daddy, can I learn to shoot? I'm old enough.
Morgan Jones : Hell yes, you're gonna learn. But we've got to do it carefully, teach you to respect the weapon.
Rick Grimes : That's right. It's not a toy. You pull the trigger, you have to mean it. Always remember that, Duane.
Duane Jones : Yes, sir.
Rick Grimes : [in a flash-forward, Rick sees a little girl walking on a deserted street] Little girl? I'm a policeman. Little girl.
Rick Grimes : [the little girl stops] Don't be afraid. Okay? Little girl.
[when the little girl turns around it's revealed to Rick that she's a walker by a part of her face missing]
[Rick starts to wake up in the hospital bed imagining that Shane is still sitting beside him]
Rick Grimes : [Rick sees the vase on the table in the room] That vase has something special. Fess up. Did you steal it from your Grandma Gene's house? I hope you left her that spoon collection. Shane?
[Rick, Shane, and Leon draw their guns out from the blockade in the middle of the street]
Lam Kendal : [the three of them hear the police sirens in the distance] Sounds like they're chasing those idiots up and down every back road we've got.
Leon Basset : Maybe we'll get on one of them video shows, you know? Like 'World's Craziest Police Chases.' What do you think?
Rick Grimes : What I think, Leon, is that you need to stay focused, and make sure you've got a round in the chamber and your safety off.
Shane Walsh : [Leon realizes the safety on his gun is still on as he turns it off] Would be kind of cool, getting on one of them shows.
[Rick sees the officer walker Leon Basset]
Rick Grimes : Leon Basset? Didn't think much of him. Careless and dumb, but... Can't leave him like this.
Morgan Jones : [Rick pulls out his pistol] You know they'll hear the shot.
Rick Grimes : Let's not be here when they show up.
Morgan Jones : [Morgan quickly tells Duane] Let's go, son. Come on.
[Rick takes Morgan to his home and shows him the missing photo albums]
Rick Grimes : They're alive, my wife and son. At least they were when they left.
Morgan Jones : How can you know? By the look of this place...
Rick Grimes : I found empty drawers in the bedroom. They packed some clothes. Not a lot, but enough to travel.
Morgan Jones : You know anybody could've broken in here and stolen clothes, right?
Rick Grimes : You see the framed photos on the walls? Neither do I. Some random thief take those too, you think? Our photo albums, family pictures, all gone.
Morgan Jones : Photo albums.
Morgan Jones : [Morgan chuckles] My wife... Same thing. There I am packing survival gear, she's grabbing photo albums.
[Rick asks Shane what the difference between men and women are]
Rick Grimes : What's the difference between men and women?
Shane Walsh : This a joke?
Rick Grimes : No, serious.
Shane Walsh : I never met a woman who knew how to turn off a light. They're born thinking the switch only goes one way. On. They're struck blind the second they leave a room. I mean, every woman, I ever let have a key... I swear to God. It's like, I come home, house is all lit up. And my job, you see, apparently... because-because my chromosomes happen to be different is I then gotta walk through that house, turn off every single light this chick left on.
Rick Grimes : Is that right?
Shane Walsh : Yeah, baby.
[Rick questions Morgan about shooting the man walking in the street]
Rick Grimes : You shot that man today.
Morgan Jones : Man?
Duane Jones : That weren't no man.
Morgan Jones : What the hell was that out of your mouth just now?
Duane Jones : It wasn't a man.
Rick Grimes : You shot him in the street out front, a man.
Morgan Jones : Friend, you need glasses. It was a walker. Come on. Sit down, before you fall down.
[Shane gives Rick a Reverend Shane speech about women]
Shane Walsh : Oh, Reverend Shane's preaching to you now, boy.
Shane Walsh : [Shane and Rick chuckle] Then, the same chick, mind ya... She'll bitch about, uh, global warming. You see, this is... This is when Reverend Shane wants to quote from the Guy Gospel and say 'Um, darling, maybe you and every other pair of boobs on this planet just figure out that the light switch, you see, goes both ways, maybe we wouldn't have so much global warming.'
Rick Grimes : You say that?
Shane Walsh : Mmm. Yeah, well, a polite version. Still, man, that-that earns me this look of loathing you would not believe. And that's when the exorcist voice pops out. 'You sound just like my damn father! Always-always yelling about the power bill, telling me to turn off the damn lights!'
Rick Grimes : And what do you say to that?
Shane Walsh : I know what I wanna say. I wanna say, 'Bitch, you mean to tell me you've been hearing this your entire life and you are still too damn stupid to learn how to turn off a switch?
[Shane and Rick chuckle some more]
[Rick tells Shane about his problems of not opening up to his wife Lori]
Shane Walsh : Hey, look, man, I may have, uh, failed to amuse with my sermon, but I did try. The least you could do is... is speak.
Rick Grimes : That's what she always says. 'Speak'. 'Speak'. You'd think I was the most closed-mouth son of a bitch to ever hear her tell it.
Shane Walsh : Do you express your thoughts? Do you share your feelings, that kind of stuff?
Rick Grimes : The thing is... Lately, whenever I try, everything I say makes her impatient, like she didn't want to hear it after all. It's like she's... Pissed at me all the time, and I don't know why.
[Rick tells Shane his final thought about the difference between men and women]
Rick Grimes : The last thing she said this morning? 'Sometimes I wonder if you even care about us at all.' She said that in front of our kid. Imagine going to school with that in your head. The difference between men and women? I would never say something that cruel to her... and certainly not in front of Carl.
[Rick gets shot in his bullet proof vest]
Shane Walsh : Rick!
Rick Grimes : I'm all right!
Shane Walsh : I saw you get tagged, man. That scared the hell out of me.
Rick Grimes : Me too. Son of a bitch shot me. Can you believe that?
Shane Walsh : What, it catch you in your new vest.
Rick Grimes : Yeah. Shane, you do not tell Lori that happened. Ever. You understand... Ah!
[as Rick gets shot from another gunman in his back]
[Morgan tells Rick about the walkers outside and to never let himself get bit by one of them]
Rick Grimes : They're out there now? In the street?
Morgan Jones : Yeah. They get more active after dark sometimes. Maybe it's the cool air or... Hell, maybe it's just me firing that gun today. But we'll be fine, long as we stay quiet. Probably wander off by morning. But listen, one thing I do know... Don't you get bit. I saw your bandage and that's what we were afraid of. Bites kill you. The fever burns you out. But then after a while... You come back.
Duane Jones : [Duane looks to Rick] Seen it happen.
[Rick kneels over the bicycle walker before shooting her in the head]
Rick Grimes : [with tears in his eyes] I'm sorry this happened to you.
[Rick fires a round]
[Rick holds the gun to his head as he lays under the tank surrounded by walkers]
Rick Grimes : Lori, Carl, I'm sorry.
[when Rick sees the open hatch underneath the tank]
[Rick is hit in the face with a shovel by the kid Duane]
Rick Grimes : [Rick drowsy from the ground] Carl? Carl. I found you.
Duane Jones : Daddy, I got the sumbitch! I'm gonna smack him dead!
Morgan Jones : He say something? I thought I heard him say something.
Duane Jones : He called me Carl.
Morgan Jones : Son, you know they don't talk.
[Rick finds a horse while on his way to Atlanta]
Rick Grimes : Easy now. Easy. I'm not gonna hurt you. Nothing like that. More like a proposal. Atlanta's just down the road a ways. It's safe there. Food, shelter, people. Other horses, too, I bet. How's that sound?
