Spidey Swings To Big Holiday Box Office

Sony and Marvel Studios brought plenty of box office fireworks to North American theaters this weekend as its highly anticipated Spider-Man: Far From Home obliterated the competition.

The return of Peter Parker, along with the continued strong business for Toy Story 4, helped pushed the top ten up a healthy 27% over last weekend’s numbers and just slightly higher than last year’s numbers at this time. The next big business boost arrives on July 19thwith the arrival of Disney’s Lion King remake.

Until then, it’s all about your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. The follow up to both 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming but also this past spring's Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: Far From Home spun a box office web worth $93.6 million for the Friday-to-Sunday frame and a massive $185 million since opening this past Tuesday.

Making the most from its post-Endgame release date, Home's six-day start on 4,636 screens is the biggest opener

‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ Hooks $185M 6-Day Opening Records For Sony & Independence Day Stretch – Sunday Final
Final Sunday Am Update: w/chart Sony is calling the 6-day opening of Sony’s Spider-Man: Far From Home at $185M which reps a record for a 6-day Independence Day launch and the Culver City studio’s best opening over that number of days. Both records were previously held by Sony’s 2004 Spider-Man 2 which made $180M over the July 4th 6-day stretch. Industry estimates for Far From Home are around $184.5M at 4,634 theaters, still excellent. 10-day global for Far From Home is an amazing $580M. By the way, remember we said Far From Home would get to at least $170M when it hit tracking? The possibility of of that comes from other beloved mega franchises like Transformers, Spider-Man and Despicable Me‘s July 4th box office history and the halo effect from Avengers: Endgame. Those were self-fulfilling prophecies here for Far From Home. CinemaScore was a solid A, the same as Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Talk about fireworks.

In a win for Sony and Kevin Feige's Marvel Studios, Spider-Man: Far From Home scored a sensational six-day launch of $185.1 million from 4,634 North American theaters, including a near-record $93.6 million over Fourth of July weekend. Globally, it now has amassed $580.1 million.

The only tentpole to have earned more over Independence Day weekend was Transformers: Dark of the Moon in 2011 ($97.9 million), not adjusted for inflation. Far From Home did, however, top Spider-Man 2 to boast the biggest six-day July Fourth debut of all time. It also is Sony's ...

‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ & The ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Halo Effect: Web-Slinger Sequel Seeing $170M+ 6-Day Opening

  • Deadline
Any sweat Sony is apt to endure this weekend with the potential under-performance of Men in Black: International will be extremely alleviated in less than three weeks when their Marvel Cinematic Universe co-production Spider-Man: Far From Home puts summer back on track with a $170M-plus opening over six days.

And there’s a bulk of historical and current B.O. and social diagnostics to support that projection. Read on.

One of the top tracking services has Far From Home at $165M, and more aggressive box office analysts believe the movie has a shot to make $200M (though some say that would be a shocker). Sony is being very conservative, with $154M for the Tuesday-Sunday spread.

We hear tracking demos for Far From Home are on par with Captain America: Civil War ($179.1M). Of course, Far From Home is skewing more male, with older females over 25 the lower demo — but even that is super strong,
