‘Marriage Story’ teaser trailers – plural: There are 2 sides to Netflix’s ‘Story’ with Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson [Watch]

On August 20 Netflix dropped not one, but two new teaser trailers for its upcoming drama “Marriage Story” starring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson. The streaming service describes the film as an “incisive and compassionate portrait of a marriage breaking up and a family staying together.” So to that end, they’re giving us both sides of the “Story.” Watch one teaser above, and scroll down for the second teaser at the bottom of this post.

“‘Marriage Story’ is a love story that reveals itself within the breakdown,” says writer-director Noah Baumbach. “With these companion trailers I wanted to show the relationship through the eyes of both characters. There are many sides to every story, and the movie embraces these different viewpoints in order to find the shared truth.”

On the contrary, studios are filling up theaters with Oscar-season content, popcorn fare and family films through the end of the year. Jack Mathews: An early handicap of the Best Picture Oscar race from someone who knows better (than to try)

Jack Mathews: An early handicap of the Best Picture Oscar race from someone who knows better (than to try)
It is mid-August and Gold Derby expert Oscar panelists are laying the early line on 2020 Oscar winners, no small task given that most films that will actually be in contention in late fall have not been released and, for some, there are no trailers with helpful hints of the writing, directing and acting we can expect.

There is the risk of personal humiliation in such early forecasts. An editor years ago insisted that I predict the next year’s Oscars the day after the current season ended. I picked Hector Babenco’s “At Play in the Field of the Lords“ to win it all. It won nothing. Thanks, boss.

Nevertheless, a challenge has been issued and I now tread where only fools dare to go. (No offense to the fools who have already dared to go.) In arranging such a list, you look at the subject matter, pedigrees and buzz

The many virtues of Shane Meadows

Few writer/directors can conjure up the feel of a place, its essence as well as its aesthetic, as well as Shane Meadows. Over the twenty-odd years he has been working, we’ve been given unrelenting explorations of the tribal natures of families, the wayward experiences of youth under pressure and we’ve looked deep into the hearts of the passionate overlooked. He frames his home country with an unblinking eye, as far from someone like Woody Allen’s elevated view of New York as is possible, but this is exactly why his work is so compelling. When he says This is England, we believe him.

Along with his nine feature films, Meadows has worked in music videos and television, continuing the beloved story of Shaun, Woody, Lol and Trev with three This is England series. Each time the magic and the madness of this world came alive and rumours persist about another chapter.
