Kevin Neece wrote The Robert Townsend Rap specifically for this movie, and was inspired by a few paragraphs from Spike Lee's autobiography detailing a time period during the late 1980s and early 1990s where if a black actor wanted to find good work, the only places they could go to were Robert Townsend, Spike Lee, and a few other directors. If you happened to be black and working in the entertainment industry, there simply weren't a lot of options back then, at least, not as much as there are today. See more
