Bet Bolsters Streaming Service With Tyler Perry Comedies

Bet's forthcoming streaming service, Bet+, is beginning to come into focus.

In addition to the previously announced First Wives Club reboot from Girls Trip screenwriter Tracey Oliver, the platform will also feature more than 1,000 hours of premium content, including library titles from Tyler Perry and a new drama series from Oliver.

Bet’s Upcoming Streaming Service To Be Joint Venture With Tyler Perry

Viacom-owned Black Entertainment Television (Bet) is the latest entertainment brand to launch its own Svod service. Bet+ will debut in the fall with 1,000 hours of content -- comprising both exclusive originals, fan-favorite series and movies, and specials -- focused on African American viewers.

When it launches, Bet+ will be a joint venture with Tyler Perry, the filmmaker and performer best known for his Madea franchise. Perry’s works across film, television, and theater will live on the service -- including the Madea films, as well as other original series like House Of Payne and Meet The Browns. Perry will also be developing new formats exclusively for Bet+, including his foray into unscripted and variety television, he says. A price for the service has not been disclosed.

“African Americans are the leading consumers of streaming services, with higher Svod adoption rates than other consumers,” Bet networks president Scott Mills said in a statement.

Updated with the official announcement. Viacom has made it official, announcing the fall launch of a new streaming service from Bet and Tyler Perry, Bet+.

Two weeks ago, Deadline reported that the venture was in the offing. The formal press release offered a couple of new details, notably the first original series ticketed for the new platform: First Wives Club, a new 10-episode scripted drama from Girls Trip screenwriter Tracy Oliver.

No pricing or exact launch date were announced for Bet+.

Umc Sets New Drama ‘A House Divided,’ ‘Craig Ross Jr.’s Monogamy’ Season 2

Variety has exclusively learned that Urban Movie Channel has set the new multi-generational family drama “A House Divided” for a summer 2019 premiere.

The series follows the direct descendants of Letty Sanders, who was enslaved in the 1800s and later became the wealthiest black woman in Los Angeles. The show centers on present-day members of the Sanders family, whose legacy is being threatened by the passing of its matriarch, a government investigation, and newly discovered secrets.

Currently in the beginning stages of production, the new series will star Demetria McKinney (Tyler Perry’s “House of Payne”), Paula Jai Parker (“Ray Donovan”), Lawrence Hilton Jacobs (“The Jacksons: An American Dream”), Brad James (“Superstition”), David McKnight (“Hollywood Shuffle”), Taja V. Simpson (Fox’s “Lethal Weapon”), and Art Evans (“Die Hard 2”).

A House Divided” comes from Dan Garcia, the creator of Umc’s series “Bronx Siu.”

Perry was the keynoter Monday at the conference’s first ever “Living the Dream: A Career in Content” session aimed at educating and fostering networking connections for budding creatives, those in entry-level industry positions and film and TV school students. The session was presented by the NAACP, the National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts and Discovery.

Perry told his story of rising from modest means in New Orleans to tackling the film and TV business entirely on his own terms. Tyler Perry, Viacom enter multi-year agreement
Comprehensive partnership to include TV, film and short-form content.

Viacom has announced a comprehensive, multi-year content partnership with Tyler Perry, encompassing television, film and short-form video.

Under the agreement, Perry will produce approximately 90 episodes annually of original drama and comedy series for Bet and other Viacom networks. Viacom will have exclusive licensing rights on this programming.

In addition, Viacom will have exclusive distribution rights to Perry’s short-form video content, and Paramount Pictures will have exclusive first-look rights on Perry’s feature film projects.

The film agreement is effective immediately, with the partnership on Perry’s TV and short-form video content to go into effect in May 2019, following the expiration of Perry’s exclusive agreement with Own: Oprah Winfrey Network. Viacom’s agreement will extend through 2024.

Perry is behind seven television series and 16 feature films in addition to 20 plays and a best-selling book.

Black Lightning’s daughters cast in The CW’s new DC pilot

Having found Jefferson Pierce last week with the casting of Cress Williams (Hart of Dixie), The CW’s latest DC pilot Black Lightning has now added two more additions in Nafessa Williams (Code Black) and China Anne McClain (House of Payne).

Deadline is reporting that McCain will play Jefferson’s younger daughter, the teenage Jennifer Pierce, an independent, outspoken scholar-athlete with a wild streak of her own, while Williams will potray Anissa Pierce — passionate and quick-witted, Jefferson’s twenty-something daughter balances the demands of medical school with her job teaching part-time at her father’s school. In the comic books, the two characters will eventually become superheroes themselves, under the names Thunder and Lightning.
