A dressed up Josh is in Jessup Corners at the saloon getting a date for a buggy ride with the glamorous Kitty Conners when Sheriff Walt Spence walks up to tell him his friend Johnny Haywood is in jail and will hang for robbing the express office. Josh goes with Walt to the jail to visit Johnny who is a close friend who once saved Josh's life. Josh tells Johnny he will get an attorney for him but there isn't much else Josh can do. Johnny grabs Josh who even in his dress clothes carries a small pocket derringer that Johnny takes. He has Josh call to Walt who is forced to drop his gun and be locked in the cell with Josh. Once released Josh has to skip the date to go looking for Johnny. His first stop is Johnny's house to see his wife Gloria. While there Walt arrives to say they found Johnny's body in a gorge where he must have fallen off his horse. Later, at the hotel as Josh prepares to leave, Deputy Evans arrives with Johnny's effects - minus a wedding ring. Josh realizes the case ... Written by Anonymous

A Very Good Episode With Some Big Twists
3 April 2010 | by ccthemovieman-1See all my reviews

"Josh Randall" (series star Steve McQueen) is in a bind.

An old childhood best friend, "John Haywood," is in jail and is likely to be hanged. He appeals to Josh for help but Randall tells him the sheriff - another old friend - is an honest man, and questions his old pal John whether he is telling the truth. "John"(Tom Drake) is really laying a guilt-trip on Josh, too, reminding him that he once saved his life, blah, blah, blah. Before you know it, ol' John, the guy in the cell, grabs Josh, takes his gun and goes on the lamb.

Josh feels like a fool. "The guy took me like an amateur," he tells the sheriff, apologizing for being careless.

Now Josh is after the escapee. A shocker happens later which changes Josh's course. I won't say what it is, but this was a good hard-edged story, more like the kind I saw in the first season of this great western TV series.

This was a good one.
