Storyline

When the bounty hunter Josh Randall visits the marshal's office in La Tunas, he steps straight into a tense situation, where the robber Andy Martin is trying to uncage his brother Carl from jail. Josh intervenes, but is knocked down. Carl kills the marshal, and the two brothers escape through the back door. In fleeing Carl is shot in his shoulder by Josh. When the townspeople find Josh and the dead marshal, they accuse Josh of the murder, as they are convinced that it was he who was trying to uncage Carl Martin to be able to get the award for him. Josh pulls his gun and flees through the back door. It is his intention to capture the brothers - dead or alive - and bring them back to La Tunsa, to get the reward for Andy Martin, but also to prove his own innocence. [Josh secretly arranges for the reward money to be deposited in the wife of the slain marshal's bank account]
Tom Wade: Josh... you know, I've heard a lot about you and not very much of it has been good. Yet after the way we treated you, you do a thing like this and you don't want anybody to know about it. Seems to me like if the word got around you might have some more friends.
Josh Randall: Simple. The kind of friends who have to know I don't want. I'll see you around.

poor start to a superior series
25 May 2017 | by grizzledgeezerSee all my reviews

This cliché-ridden story -- written by the series' producer, and the first broadcast episode -- makes one wonder how "WDA" ever got on the air. It's strictly action, with none of the storytelling variety and dramatic interest that made it a standout Western. Perhaps the strangest omission is that McQueen's adorable drawl is nowhere to be heard.

In fairness, it shows how even experienced producers sometimes have to experiment to find the right elements for a successful show.
