Storyline

After finishing picking peaches with many Walton Mountain residents, a man who was once an auto mechanic accepts an offer from the Waltons of overnight lodging for him and his son. Verdie Grant has other plans, though: she is attracted to the man, and dotes on his son. Verdie thinks her lonely days may be over. Accepting a mechanic job at Ike's, the traveler seems ready to settle down, but Verdie oversteps her boundary and her lectures about what is right for the little boy has the opposite affect she was looking for. Quotes

Narrator: [narration as John 'John Boy' Walton, Jr. reading from his journal] When I was growing up on Waltons Mountain, the Great Depression cast its shadow over us as it did over everyone but we were more fortunate than most. Then, one hot summer afternoon, I met others less fortunate. Through them I learned the real meaning of home.
