A summer storm, which topples a tree onto their caravan, forces a family of wanderers to take shelter in the empty Balwin house. John-Boy and Jason discover them when they go to check on the house, and call the sheriff. Facing arrest, and with a sick baby in tow, the wanderers accept John-Boy's offer of a camp at the Walton's home. Pride and a way of life prevents the refugees from Bulgaria from accepting any other hospitality from the Waltons, until their baby's illness becomes so serious that Grandma intervenes despite not being welcomed to do so. Narrator: [narration as John 'John Boy' Walton, Jr. reading from his journal] Times were hard everywhere during the days of the Great Depression; but on Waltons Mountain, we were better off than most. For many, though, it was a time of wandering, of looking for some better place, a new grasp on life or a change of scene. And I remember when some wanderers came to our mountain one wild, stormy summer night.
