Quotes

[last lines]
Henrietta Porter: You were talking about the Bible.
Hoby Gilman: Huh? Oh well, uh...
Bart McCallin: It's simple, Mrs. Porter. I didn't want to play Cain to my brother's Abel. Then I thought I had to. Only Mr. Gilman here convinced me there was another way out. I had to become My Brother's Keeper.
Debby McCallin: Thank you, Mr. Gilman.
Hoby Gilman: My pleasure.

So all this started because a little girl rode into town and "told" on her father. She was worried that her father would turn into an outlaw and wanted Hoby to stop it before it happened. She must have overheard part of the conversation or something. Apparently her father was trying to convince the other two that he didn't want to help out - he had left all that in his past.

So basically, if the little girl had kept her mouth shut, Hoby would have had no reason to suspect Bart McCallin of this crime. BUT, if the little girl HAD kept her mouth shut, perhaps Hoby would have never been able to solve the crime and the bank of Porter would have been robbed.
