Betty Roberts (Amanda Naughton) gets an unexpected offer of a job as assistant editor at The New Yorker magazine, but is unsure whether to accept it, thinking that she is needed more at WENN. The WENN staff is not supposed to know about the offer, but Gertie (Margaret Hall), who read the telegram from The New Yorker, inevitably blurts out the story. A council of war is convened, and Mr. Eldridge (George Hall) recites some fortune cookie wisdom about letting loved ones go, and so the staff decides to prove to Betty they can do without her. Mr. Pruitt (Jonathan Freeman) volunteers to write the scripts until a replacement writer can be found, and the on-air characters start spouting capitalist sentiments. Nonetheless, everyone else is quite successful in making Betty believe she should go, until Mr. Pruitt's script for "This Girl's Kinfolk" results in the entire town of Bonneyville Mills being destroyed in a hurricane.
