Ex-jock Ward Nichols works at Health House and is engaged to Casey Daniels whose guardian Bernard Daniels owns it and is a stickler. Fellow employee Veronica Temple is blackmailing Ward. Bernard is murdered and Ward is blamed.
Ex-jock Ward Nichols is engaged to Casey Daniels whose uncle Bernard Daniels has given him a job but is unsure he wants them to marry. Bernard is a health guru and runs a high end health spa, Health House. He's noticed a series of checks seemingly signed by his employee Eugene Houseman for $7,000 and suspects that Ward may have forged the signatures. Casey is concerned for her fiancé as she believes he is being blackmailed by his ex-wife Veronica Temple who also works for Health House and so contacts Perry Mason for help. Veronica is also having an affair with the Health House physician Dr. Harrison Berry. Bernard Daniels is a tough boss, even firing long-time employee, locker room attendant Buzz Farrell, for drinking on the job. When Bernard Daniels is found dead, Ward Nichols is charged with murder and Perry defends him.Written by
A witness claims to be ambidextrous (and not strictly left-handed) and then mentions that being ambidextrous is a desired trait for handball players. In many sports, and notably in racket sports such as handball or raquetball, ambidextrous players do have an advantage as they may have a stronger backhand or they may even switch hands mid-play to hit the ball in a forearm swing using either hand. Under oath in court, the lab technician testified that only the defendant's (Ward Nichols) prints were found on the broken whiskey bottle, yet viewers witnessed that both Buzz Farrell & Bernard Daniels handled it. Daniels, however, had his ball-playing gloves on when handling the bottle. See more »

Maggie Pierce is caught between two men and she turns to Perry Mason for legal advice. She's the heir and niece of Les Tremayne who runs a chain of gyms and is both puritanical and tyrannical. Her boyfriend is former athlete Ed Nelson who works at the gym and she suspects that some missing money maybe traced to him. Nelson's ex-wife Leslie Parrish works there as well and she's a piece of work as we learn later on as the show progresses. Pierce is afraid of her blackmailing Nelson.
But it's Tremayne who winds up murdered, smacked in the head with a weight. As we learn about Tremayne he's a less lovable character as time goes on. Any number of people would want to see him leave the land of the living.
In the end Raymond Burr has one witness cornered on the stand, but another steps up and confesses. I think this is one of the few times he wasn't on target, but got the right result anyway.
One of the better Perry Mason episodes.
