Shake a Tail Feather
4 March 2014 | by kevinolzakSee all my reviews

"Bedknobs and Drumsticks" is a well remembered episode, the Partridges signing to do a 30 second commercial for Uncle Erwin's Country Chicken, but the initial ad depicting a family picnic fails to please the Colonel Sanders-type mogul, played by William Windom (Danny Goldman as the director). What they wind up doing is donning chicken outfits, everybody forced to 'Shake a Tail Feather' in their humiliating costumes (Reuben: "it does make you think chicken!"). Lovely Elaine Giftos makes her second appearance as Reuben's stewardess girlfriend, Bonnie Kleinschmidt, while Ondine Vaughn, one of the few performers to appear on both THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY and THE MONKEES (previously seen in "The Modfather"), shows up as Bonnie's fellow stewardess Gwen. The featured song is one of their most underrated rockers, "Friend and a Lover" (composed by Wes Farrell, Bobby Hart, and Danny Janssen), issued as the ninth single April 1973 (two months after this broadcast), becoming the last to chart, scraping the bottom of the Top 100 at 99, and opening the sixth LP NOTEBOOK (its B-side, "Something's Wrong," also appeared on the album, issued Nov 1972). It begins with "Sunshine," also composed by Farrell, Hart, and Janssen, from seventh LP CROSSWORD PUZZLE (previously heard in "Ain't Loveth Grand?").
