Scooby Doo meets Don Adams
11 September 2016 | by TheLittleSongbirdSee all my reviews

While 'The New Scooby Doo Movies' was a patchy and inconsistent show, it was also interesting and entertaining, with some great episodes, a handful of decent to good ones, some average to mediocre and a few bad.

"The Exterminator" is one of the decent episodes. It is not one of the best of the entire show, but it is one of the better episodes of the second season, a season where "The Spirited Spooked Sports Show" and "The Haunted Carnival" were the best and "Mystery in Persia" and "The Haunted Showboat" (two of the show's worst) were the weakest.

Here in "The Exterminator" there are a few big flaws. Again, the animation is less than great, in fact like with the rest of season 2 especially (though it was the show in general's most common flaw) it's often pretty bad. There are worse animated episodes in Season 2, at least some of the colours are atmospheric and the goofs are not quite as numerous or as inept as other episodes. However, the animation quality did take a big nose-dive in the second season from the first one and "The Exterminator" is not exempt from that, with all the stiffness, choppiness, sloppiness, crudeness and flatness present in especially the latter episodes.

Some episodes of 'The New Scooby Doo Movies' suffer from too long a length and not having enough story or material to sustain it, so parts feel stretched and padded. "The Exterminator" is not one of the worst cases ("Mystery in Persia" is the worst), as the chemistry with Don Adams and the gang and the takes on Lon Chaney (with a memorable character named Lorne Chumley) and old films are really enjoyable and keep the episode afloat. At the same time the story is a bit thin and a bit stretched, plus it could have done at times with more of a spooky atmosphere as a consequence on being too reliant on the humour and such.

Don Adams is a fun guest star, with some nice quips and great chemistry with the gang. He is crudely animated however and not that easy to accept as an exterminator, agreed that that stretched him somewhat.

However, the music is energetic and haunting while the theme tune is catchy and infectious as ever. The writing is endearingly silly and has wit and an affectionate nostalgic air, Daphne backhanding Velma was funny and refreshing after times where Fred, Velma and Daphne have not been particularly interesting and agreed also about the Iron Maiden reference.

While the story is a flawed one, there is still enough to stick with it. Mystery Inc are all enjoyable, especially Shaggy and Scooby as always (also love their friendship which is so much of the franchise's charm), and share a great chemistry with Adams.

All the voice acting is just fine, can't do better than Don Messick and Casey Kasem's superlative Scooby and Shaggy.

Overall, decent episode and one of the better Season 2 episodes if not of the entire show. 7/10 Bethany Cox
